"International crime and justice is an emerging field that covers international and transnational crimes that have not been the focus of mainstream criminology or criminal justice. This book examines the field from a global perspective. It is urgent in science and society to address climate change and other sustainability challenges such as biodiversity loss, deforestation, depletion of marine fish stocks, global ill-health, land degradation, land use change and water scarcity. Sustainability science (SS) is an attempt to bridge the natural and social sciences for seeking creative solutions to these complex challenges. In this article, we propose a research agenda that advances the methodological and theoretical understanding of what SS can be, how it can be pursued and what it can contribute. The key focus is on knowledge structuring. For that purpose, we designed a generic research platform organised as a three-dimensional matrix comprising three components: core themes (scientific understanding, sustainability goals, sustainability pathways); cross-cutting critical and problem-solving approaches; and any combination of the sustainability challenges above. As an example, we insert four sustainability challenges into the matrix (biodiversity loss, climate change, land use changes, water scarcity). Based on the matrix with the four challenges, we discuss three issues for advancing theory and methodology in SS: how new synergies across natural and social sciences can be created; how integrated theories for understanding and responding to complex sustainability issues can be developed; and how theories and concepts in economics, gender studies, geography, political science and sociology can be applied in SS. The generic research platform serves to structure and create new knowledge in SS and is a tool for exploring any set of sustainability challenges. The combined critical and problem-solving approach is essential.

Traditionelle Wege der Erzeugung, Implementation und Vermarktung neuer Technologien erweisen sich als zunehmend ungeeignet zur Lösung von Zukunftsproblemen. Sozialwissenschaftliche Innovationsforschung, die sich mit gescheiterten Innovationen, risikoreichen Projekten und der Wirkung staatlicher Technologiepolitik befaßt, liefert dafür zahlreiche Hinweise. The bad news is that critics of the quantitative movement in policy and political science are right (so far). Widely accepted quantitative models of politics promote cynicism and counter‐productive uses of government power. Mainstream social science provides a perverse basis for policy analysis. The good news is that there is no sound scientific reason for the schism between so called "empirical" and "normative" theories of politics. Traditional theories of politics, which show how government power can be used to serve the public interest, can be quantified and tested as empirical theory. The resulting scientific normative theory provides a constructive foundation for policy analysis.

Tomando como fuente de información para esta comunicación el Repertorio EUROSPES de Bases de Datos en Ciencias Sociales editado en 1990, se analiza la oferta de Información a través de las Bases de Datos creadas en los países europeos de habla latina. El objetivo del trabajo que se presenta es conocer, de manera detallada, los rasgos que definen esta oferta en cada país y en el conjunto de países estudiados. Estructurado en dos partes, en la primera se ofrecen, en primer lugar, datos sobre las características de la información contenida en las bases de datos: naturaleza de la información, temas sobre los que versa, cobertura temporal, técnicas documentales utilizadas, normas de descripción bibliográfica, productores de esas Bases de Datos. En segundo lugar, se estudian los aspectos relativos a la distribución de la información: distribuidores, -paquetes de gestión de bases de datos, instrumentos de ayuda al usuario para las consultas, tipo de acceso que se ofrece. La segunda parte se dedica al análisis de los datos aportados en la primera: distribución de la producción de bases de datos por temas, países y años, estudio de las áreas temáticas no cubiertas, comparación de las técnicas documentales empleadas, compatibilidad de los paquetes de gestión y de los formatos informáticos, análisis de la calidad de los servicios de acceso, precios, formación ofrecida, etc. Se finaliza con unas conclusiones orientadas a proponer los desarrollos deseables para el conjunto de paises así como las posibilidades de cooperación con vistas a mejorar la oferta de información automatizada en Ciencias Sociales.
