The objective of this paper is to examine how corporate social responsibility (CSR) practices of foreign multinational enterprises in China contribute to China's national priorities, by discussing the relationships between CSR and the building of a 'harmonious society' in China. This paper is based on personal reflections, extensive literature review, and 8 years of experiential field work in China by the author. Many CSR programs are found to superficially complement China's harmonious society policy. Only four exemplars out of 20 multinational enterprises surveyed are committed to fostering green growth, improving livelihood, developing outwardly into the west, and promoting a general integration of Chinese business into global markets through social innovations and collaborative projects. The paper posits that it is possible to use CSR as a change agent in China when enlightened public concerns are brought back to business operations through the involvement of non‐government organizations, local government, and local citizens and a greater degree of transparency of information. Victoria University in conjunction with Crime Prevention Victoria (CPV) received an ARC grant to investigate the relationships between crime prevention and community governance. The first task of the project was to develop a framework linking community needs, community capacity, wellbeing and CPV interventions, to guide selection of social indicators and then compile a database of data from various sources. Among the difficulties inherent in developing social indicators are: selecting a framework to guide the development and analysis of the indicators; the difficulty of obtaining a reliable across-government comprehensive database that would be continuously updated; the different contexts, policy goals and programs that indicators could serve; the significance of different definitions and contexts; applying appropriate criteria to guide the selection of the indicators; and the diversity of views about how indicators should or could be used. The purpose of this paper is to describe how these issues are addressed in this project, the theoretical framework that guides the selection of data from the database and how some of these difficulties are addressed.

AbstractThis study attempts to fill in two research gaps in the extant literature concerning the ecosystem for social innovation in the context of emerging market economies such as India. The study first attempts to assess the potential of corporate social responsibility (CSR) in not‐for‐profit entities such as technology business incubators (TBIs) to stimulate social innovations in the prevalent ecosystems in emerging markets. Further, using a random‐effects Tobit model, the study examines the characteristics of firms that spend higher percentages of CSR expenditure on not‐for‐profit TBIs/societies/trusts in India. The study provides policy suggestions to create an entrepreneurial ecosystem for promoting social innovation in emerging markets such as India.

RéSUMé Cet article explicite une distinction entre deux sens du lien social : un sens de lien fonctionnel, qui ne s'applique qu'à ses aspects physiques ou biologiques, et un sens de lien civil, qui s'applique à la capacité des sujets sociaux de concevoir et évaluer leur propre vie matérielle et biologique du point de vue sémantique et moral. Partant du problème du lien et de la coopération sociale tel qu'il est posé dans l'ouvrage de Durkheim, La division du travail social, l'article présente ensuite les principaux éléments d'une « théorie du lien civil » et sa contribution éventuelle à l'explication de la coopération sociale, en situant cette approche par rapport au paradigme bio-anthropologique contemporain.

ABSTRACTSocial cooperatives represent the most notable form of non‐profit organizations operating in Italy in the social services field, the birth and development of which has been strongly linked to, and conditioned by, the needs and resources of territories and communities. This paper intends to demonstrate how certain socio‐economic factors, recognized in economic literature as antecedents of the development of social enterprises, may account for the spread of social cooperatives in different Italian regions. Furthermore, the research results demonstrate an inter‐regional differentiation of the shape social cooperation has entered into in Italy.

Examines how Spain, as a new member state, adapted to the rules of European Union (EU) social policy, particularly those regarding working conditions, gender equality, & social protection. Shown is how the Europeanist socialist PSOE (acronym not explained) government maintained a dynamic commitment that took Spain from backward to advanced & from laggard to compliant positions, but not uniformly. Spain partially made up its "social deficit" & implemented many European social policies.
