Abstract
Tipping is a multi-billion-dollar phenomenon that traditional economic theory finds hard to explain. Why do people leave money as tips when service has already been provided? Two main potential reasons are that tipping is a social norm, and a strategic behavior aimed to assure good future service. A game-theoretical model is developed which allows the analysis of how tipping behavior should depend on patronage frequency if strategic motivations affect tipping. Thus, the model provides predictions that can be combined with empirical data on tipping behavior to answer the fundamental question, why do people tip?

The signal performances of Southeast Asian countries in attaining economic growth and political stability are frequently explained by cultural and policy factors. Recent research suggests, however, that the role of the state is extensive and central to economic and political goals. The present approach to the comparative evaluation of state capacities attempts to account for the variations and nuances of the performance of Southeast Asian states. The structure of political support and available means of social control provide relatively greater capacity to state elites in Singapore and Malaysia, and less capacity to state elites in the Philippines and Indonesia; Thailand is an intermediate case.
This paper describes the setting up and operation of a Crisis Intervention Service in a semi-rural community serving a population of 75,000 within a 20-mile radius. It was established in response to the mounting problem of drug abuse by youth in the community. Workers in the service were drawn from within the peer group being served, and the service has been deliberately client-orientated. It has developed as a community project. Significant features behind its success are described. Evaluation on a cost-effectiveness basis shows considerable saving in both financial and professional time terms, which should interest any organization, medical, social or political, concerned with these matters.

Britain's 2015 summer budget introduced a policy extending the use of loans in its social security system. From April 2018 support for mortgage interest will be loaned, rather than granted. Its repayment is to be via a charging order on the homes of benefit recipients and/or from wages when they (re-)enter work. This development is examined in relationship to the use of loans in British social assistance provision. The paper argues that it is consistent with the philosophical underpinnings of loaning social assistance, but it also involves new developments with regard to charging interest and the recovery of the loans.

Freud's views on women were widely accepted by the social work profession from the 1920s until recently. A review of the literature shows how Freudian theory was disseminated into social work and why his original writings on women were not critically evaluated.

An in-depth study of clients and social workers in a family service agency revealed striking differences in their perceptions, especially in regard to satisfaction with outcome and assessment of clients' functioning. Selected findings and implications for social work practice and education are presented and discussed.
"This title was first published in 2003.The People's Republic of China (PRC) is a timely example of social policy reform in a socialist market economy. This important and topical edited collection brings together leading Chinese and Western experts to introduce and integrate policy issues of the PRC into the mainstream of cross-national social policy debate. Drawing upon comparativist expertise in relevant aspects of social policy, the book explores the ways in which the PRC has or has not taken lessons from abroad? in key social policy respects and illustrates policy-relevant relations between Chinese and Western perspectives. The contributors identify those aspects of China's recent social policy reforms that seem the most and least likely to appeal to Western societies. The collection therefore represents a substantial advance in two-way, East-West lesson learning in social and public policy."--Provided by publisher.

What is biopolitics? The authors are well-published scholars in this field, and their answer to this question supplied in this book should give hope to those who are disappointed with the direction and progress of political science. Many of the questions about politics that biopolitics addresses were first asked by ancient political philosophers, such as Aristotle. The field of biopolitics, however, is only 30 or 40 years old. Over that time the field has strengthened its institutional base. Of equal importance, it has produced a growing body of scholarship in such fields as political theory, comparative politics and international relations, methodology, political behavior and decision making, and public administration and public policy. Unfortunately, largely because the field is interdisciplinary, only a small portion of this scholarship has been published in the major political science journals, so that most political scientists and other social scientists are largely unaware of what this field is and what it has to offer.

The purpose of the research was to determine Sweden's positive experience in the field of social protection. To achieve this goal, general and special scientific research methods were used, in particular the system functional method, the method of hermeneutics, dialectical and statistical methods. The authors assume that the Scandinavian model of social protection (Sweden, Norway, Finland) differs from other European countries by a more developed social security system. In Scandinavian countries the state model of social protection prevails. The concept of "social protection" in these countries has been transformed into the concept of "social welfare". This model includes a compulsory social policy, a state-regulated income level and the egalitarian and general nature of social benefits and assistance. It is concluded that the fundamental principle of the Swedish social model is its universality: it covers all segments of the population. For this reason, its study is particularly relevant. The article reveals the characteristics of social protection against unemployment in Sweden. Special attention is paid to the protection of children's rights and aspects of family policy and gender equality.
