The combination of entrenched racism, the structural legacies of slavery and colonialism, and neoliberal austerity, together with far-reaching changes in the way students and teachers are encouraged to understand the purpose, provision and 'consumption' of higher education, has exacerbated the crisis of the public university in the UK and beyond. Needless to say, its consequences are being magnified and intensified with unprecedented speed by the impact of Covid-19 and the government's responses to it. The short articles that follow, along with further articles that will be collected in a dossier in a forthcoming issue, aim to engage with some of the many aspects of this complex and highly charged situation.

Stakeholders responsible for disaster management need to understand students' disaster risk perception in order to increase community resilience. The aim of this study was to develop a scale to determine disaster risk perception of university students on campus and to investigate the disaster risk perception of the students of Gümüşhane University in Turkey. The data of the study were collected from 617 students and analyzed by means of SPSS and AMOS programs. Descriptive statistics, factor analysis, Mann–Whitney U test, Kruskal–Wallis H test, and structural equation model were applied. Consequently, a valid and reliable scale consisting of four factors (exposure, anxiety, effect, and uncontrollable) was obtained. According to the students, rockfall was most likely to occur on campus. Gender and type of school had a significant effect on disaster risk perception, while disaster experience, disaster education, disaster volunteer, and class level did not have a significant effect on disaster risk perception. Students with chronic illness had significantly higher perceptions of the uncontrollable. The structural equation model showed that exposure, effect, and uncontrollable were significant and positive predictors of anxiety.

This article explores the phenomenon of academics' resistance to managerialism in the contemporary university. Drawing on interviews with 30 academics in ten Australian universities, it employs a range of disciplinary and theoretical perspectives to map and analyse the forms of resistance to managerialism enacted by these academics. In particular, it draws on the work of James C. Scott, including his notions of the `weapons of the weak', and the `hidden transcript' of the subordinated and powerless, to frame an account of organizational resistance in higher education. It is argued here that Scott's anthropological studies of resistance make a useful contribution to an understanding of workplace resistance, complementing recent theoretical developments within this field which emphasize the importance of discursive resistance.

Western political science has only been taught in the People's Republic of China since the liberalization of the Chinese higher education system in the 1980s. Thus, in 1988, the author was the first visiting foreign professor in the political science department at Beijing U, teaching classes in political development in Chinese & in comparative foreign policy in English. Teaching was hampered by the lack of suitable instructional material, but students were proficient at note-taking. They were well-grounded in political science, & anxious to discuss topics, but outside of class time. The professional & administrative staffs, the campus, & living conditions at the university are described in detail. M. Pflum
