Cultural Values and Social Choice of Technology
In: International social science journal: ISSJ, Band 33, Heft 3, S. 447-465
ISSN: 0020-8701
Both cultural & technological determinism are considered inappropriate for analyzing the relationships between technology, values, & social change, because they prevent close examination of opposing interests & specific strategies of social groups involved in introduction of new technology. Regarding choice of new technology, values function to delimit the range of possible alternatives, while more immediate interests may strongly influence final decision making. Successful implementation of technological innovations will in part depend on the latter's compatibility with strongly valued social practices. The impact of new technology on values should be seen as mediated by changes it may bring about in the concrete social relations affected. In this context, a distinction is made between specific & diffuse technologies. In the case of specific technology, articulation of different interests is mostly rather clear; assessment of the impact of diffuse technology on both social relations & cultural values is more difficult. Technological innovation of the latter kind provides new behavioral alternatives for some groups, while limiting those of others. The consequent emergence of new patterns of social practices may in turn lead to a change in attitudes & values. AA.

ACHIEVING THE NEW SUSTAINABLE DEVELOPMENT GOALS: THE ROLE OF SCIENTIFIC RESEARCH IN NIGERIAN UNIVERSITIES
This paper examines achieving the new sustainable development goals, the role of scientific research in Nigerian universities. Development in any sector can only be achieved when challenges facing such sector are located and tackled. Sustainable development goals are birthed to address every problematic area of human life. Researches, especially scientific researches, fits into all these areas are medium through which solution can be preferred. This study examines the nature, classification, types and approaches of scientific research. It also laid bare the sustainable development goals, the importance and the roles scientific researches play in the achievement of the goals. Academics and professionals must know that education and research are explicitly recognized in all of the SDGs and that universities/tertiary institutions have a direct role in addressing the challenges therein. Higher education institutions (with academics and professionals on the driving seat) have a critical role to play in implementing and driving sustainable development initiatives through their institutional policies and practices. EGO-INVOLVED WORLD-MINDEDNESS, NATIONALITY IMAGES, AND METHODS OF RESEARCH: A METHODOLOGICAL NOTE
In: The journal of conflict resolution: journal of the Peace Science Society (International), Band 4, Heft 2, S. 185-192
ISSN: 0022-0027, 0731-4086
The trait-checking method, used in a series of studies of how individuals conceive of other nationalities, is criticized for being often too rigid & too little informative, & a series of other methods are discussed & illustrated. The focus is on relatively unstructured methods, such as picture-story devices & sentence-completion techniques. It is demonstrated, ie, that such special characteristics of internat'l att's as their ease of activation & differentiation can be more adequately studied by such methods than by the trait-checking technique. Empirical data referred to include among other things content analysis of about 275 picture stories, collected among children with & without experience of internat'l camps. AA.
Recruiting Diverse Groups of Young People to Research: Agency and Empowerment in the Consent Process
In: Qualitative social work: research and practice, Band 3, Heft 4, S. 469-482
ISSN: 1741-3117
Ethical matters in research with children and young people, such as recruitment procedures and gaining informed consent, have been a fruitful ground for exploring issues such as power and protection, researcher responsibility and social versus individual good, that feature in all human research. It has also raised for debate the extent to which children and young people are similar to, or different from, adults and whether they require special protection to manage their involvement. A four-step process for recruiting young people into a qualitative research project is outlined. Young people were recruited as fully consenting participants and, at the same time, adult requirements that parents be informed and agree to their children's involvement was achieved. The process discussed enables the exercise of parental responsibility while not discounting the rights and needs of children for recognition of their agency and autonomy

Limits of the 'Social Pact' in Brazil
The present article analyzes the June 2013 demonstrations that took place in many cities in Brazil, arguing that ultimately they expose the limits of the 'social pact' promoted by Lula since his 2002 presidential campaign. Problems and contradictions in different spheres of the Brazilian society are brought into light to argue that the 'social pact' has reached its limits and that structural changes are needed if it is to deepen social justice and economic growth. The recent protests and informal online organized mobilizations pose new challenges not only to the Federal Government, but to political parties and the labor movement itself, especially in the face of the upcoming 2014 presidential elections.

In: Research and Practice for Persons with Severe Disabilities, Band 32, Heft 3, S. 190-206

This article reports concerns among disability community members that the implications of genetic research will be driven by mistaken beliefs about genetics and negative attitudes toward disability as identified in a qualitative study funded by the National Human Genome Research Institute. In addition to reporting the nature and the context of disability community concerns related to perceptions of disability and of human genetics, the authors discuss the historic role of attitudes toward disability and science in popularizing eugenics in early 20th century America as evidence of the seriousness of these concerns.
