partially_open ; Il primo obiettivo che ci si pone in questo lavoro è delineare un quadro dettagliato e al contempo sistematico dell'opera di Honneth, a partire dai primi scritti fino all'ultima monografia ad oggi pubblicata dall'autore, Das Recht der Freiheit. La ricostruzione dell'itinerario teorico honnethiano è svolta in stretta interrelazione con l'analisi critica dei progressivi sviluppi del paradigma di Honneth: si cerca di mostrare, di volta in volta, i problemi teorici che in esso si pongono, le risposte che tali problemi ottengono all'interno della prospettiva honnethiana, le strade alternative che avrebbero potuto essere percorse e le questioni ancora aperte. Particolare attenzione è dedicata anche al confronto di Honneth con i suoi principali autori e ambiti teorici di riferimento: Hegel, Marx, Adorno, Habermas, le fonti storiografiche e la teoria psicoanalitica delle relazioni oggettuali; in vari punti della tesi ci si sofferma a esaminare il modo in cui essi vengono da Honneth interpretati e fatti confluire nell'elaborazione del paradigma del riconoscimento. Book review of Bettina Migge & Isabelle Léglise. Exploring language in a multilingual context : variation, interaction and ideology in language documentation. New York : Cambridge University Press, 2013 ; Bettina Migge and Isabelle Léglise's monograph Exploring Language in a Multilingual Context sheds light onto recent developments in the English-lexified creole languages of Surinamese origin spoken in western French Guiana, i.e. Eastern Maroon (a cover term for the mutually intelligible varieties Aluku, Ndyuka, and Pamaka), Saamaka (also referred to as Saramaka/Saramaca), and Sranan Tongo. This book makes fascinating reading for linguists and social anthropologists interested in linguistic and cultural hybridization in linguistically, culturally, and socially complex (post-)colonial societies. It is also an important contribution to the study of the languages of Suriname and French Guiana. So far, most of the available linguistic literature on the latter country is in French, and often published with smaller, specialized publishers (for an overview of the linguistic situation in Guiana, see e.g. Renault-Lescure & Goury 2009; Vernaudon & Fillol 2009). The book anticipates the publication of two other works (in which the two authors are involved as editors and/or contributors) that also look at the languages of Suriname from a more multidisciplinary perspective. One spans social geography, linguistics, social anthropology and politics (Carlin et al. 2014), the other examines developments in the non-creole languages of the region in addition to the creole languages, e.g. Sarnami, Javanese, Lokono, Hakka, Dutch (Yakpo & Muysken, in prep.). ; postprint

The broad aim of this thesis is twofold: firstly, I contextualise the Maausk movement and its practitioners' understandings in relation to history and the surrounding society; secondly, I analyse the affective and embodied experiences of being a Maausk practitioner from a phenomenological perspective. The thesis focuses on the formation and practice of Maausk, which is perceived to be deeply tied to the society and history where it exists. Relatedly, this study examines how Maausk identity formation and practices have been influenced by the Soviet legacy, romantic nationalism and Estonia's current economic and political situation. In order to analyse the Maausk experiences and narratives, this study draws from various phenomenologically oriented theories of affect, embodiment and emotion, as well as cultural theories of place, identity, tradition and authenticity. I have used economic anthropology and globalisation theories as well as historical studies of Estonia's Soviet past to contextualise the Maausk movement. Further, to place Maausk in the European religious landscape, this study refers to native faith and Neo-pagan studies. Through sensory ethnography, this study draws on the affective and emotional aspects of the research material to analyse how the complexity of emotional experiences of being a Maausk practitioner produces Maausk meanings and values. The study also examines the role and function of the body and emotions during the process of embodying the Maausk practices, both techniques and meanings of the practices.

This article seeks to be a contribution to the recent bourgeoning of studies in the anthropology of (sacred) spaces, places and landscapes. Ethnographically, it deals with the social topography of Navadvip and Mayapur, vaishnava pilgrimage places in the Nadia district of West Bengal. It analyses the contemporary articulations of the experience and making of a contrasted and consecrated landscape, and its potential in embodying differentiated community identities. It describes the various public faces of Bengal-Vaishnava groups and argues in favour of the inherent relationships between devotional self-experiences and the emotional landscape which is inhabited and constituted simultaneously. It details the cultural geography of Navadvip and Mayapur as embodied in the layout of different temples and ashrams, and the circulating stories establishing their significance. The stories sometimes hunt out lost sites, sometimes legitimise existing ones and, at other times, override all such concerns over specific sites in favour of a passionate engagement with the entire landscape. In every instance among the plural modes of 'dwelling' in the mnemonic-fabled sacred space, the vaishnava groups claim to discover the essence of the landscape and thereby assert their multiform practices of self-experiences as authentic representations of the sect. In the end, the article also contrasts the inhabitants' landscapes and devotional self-experiences with that of the traveller and throws up new questions in the anthropological understandings of places, landscapes, journeys and devotion.

This article examines the existential theology and its place in the modern postexistentialist thinking, which in Ukraine is understood as a set of cultural synthesis of classical ideas of existentialism with the various branches of philosophical knowledge (anthropology, phenomenology, axiology, ethics, aesthetics, dialectic) and human sciences (psychology, pedagogy, economics, political science), etc. Analyzes the principles and structure of the understanding of the existential theology and postexistentialist thinking in the Russian Federation and Ukraine, the nature of interpretation could process into existence of modern theology in the United States and Western Europe. ; В статье исследуется экзистенциальная теология и ееместо в системе со-временного постэкзистенциалистского мышления, которое в Украине понимают как совокупность культурологических синтезов идей классического экзистенциализма с различными отраслями философского знания (антропологией, феноменологией, аксиологией, этикой, эстетикой, диалектикой) и гуманитарными науками (психологией, педагогикой , экономикой, политологией) и т.д. Maģistra darba pētījumā tiek analizēti jautājumi, kas saistoši lauku ainavu ilgtspējīgas attīstības nodrošināšanai, kā centrālo jautājumu izvirzot cilvēka uztveres un vērtību nozīmi rīcības izvēlei attiecībās ar apkārtējo vidi. Šo komponenšu nozīmi pēta sociālantropoloģija, kuras pētniecības metodes un principi tiek pielietoti vides pārvaldības modeļa izstrādē, uzsverot vērtību un uztveres mijattiecības kā virzītājspēku lauku ainavu ilgtspējīgai attīstībai. Par izpētes un vides pārvaldības modeļa ieviešanas teritoriju tiek izvēlēts Vecpiebalgas novads, jo tajā ir savdabīga novada izveides vēsture, kultūras mantojums un izteiksmīgas ainavas, kuru pastāvēšana mūsdienās kļūst par jūtīgu jautājumu. Pētījumā pielietotās metodes: relevantas literatūra analīze, mērķgrupu (iedzīvotāji, valsts pārvalde, eksperti) izpēte un aptauja, lauka studijas. ; This paper analyses issues to ensure sustainable development of rural landscapes, focusing on the importance of human perception and values when choosing actions in respect of the environment. The importance of these components is studied in social anthropology, where the research methods and principles are applied to develop a model of environmental management, highlighting the interaction of the values and perception as the driving force for sustainable development of landscapes. Vecpiebalga's district was chosen as the territory for introduction of research and management model, as it has a peculiar history, rich cultural heritage and expressive landscapes, which existence is becoming a sensitive issue nowadays. Used methods: analysis of literature, research of target groups (residents, government, experts) and questioner, field studies.

The 1987 publication ofWomen and Music in Cross-Cultural Perspectives, the first anthology on the topic of women and music in the field of ethnomusicology, marked a critical turn in the scholarship. The ethnographic-focused essays on women's genres and roles in music in diverse societies around the world, including the Middle East, presented new analytical frameworks and research on authority, gender and access, and notions of power and performance. Today, research on the musical practices of women continues to expand in ethnomusicology and in fields such as anthropology. Many scholars now acknowledge the centrality of gender for locating "how society is in music and music is in society." This is a particularly important approach for the Middle East and North Africa, where the undervaluing or silencing of women's musical practices and abilities had continued to dominate ethnomusicology. An important study to break from the paradigm was Virginia Danielson's 1997 monograph on Umm Kulthum. Danielson analyzes the development and the construction of a musical and a social "voice," looking at what it means for this particular artist to bothbethe voice of andhavea voice in colonial and postcolonial Egypt. In the discussion that follows I outline the academic trajectory of writings on women and music in Morocco, which I have divided into three distinct historical moments, each exemplifying different approaches to the subject matter: work by 20th-century French colonial scholars, by contemporary European and American scholars, and by contemporary Moroccan scholars.

This papers examines the experiences of converts to Islam among Australian women in the milieu of polemic views and debates such as 'Islam versus the west', which is most visible in the image of the 'eastern' 'oppressed' Muslim woman. Employing the experiences of Australian Muslim women converts in Melbourne, issues concerning identity politics, and the individuals and social dimensions of conversion are investigated. While there is an array of literature about Muslim women from various disciplines including anthropology, sociology, politics, cultural studies and gender studies, among others, this paper takes an interdisciplinary approach to examine debates that have based their discussion on the image of the Muslim woman. Marco debates concerning issues such as multiculturalism, integration, Islam and the West debates including the 'clash of civilizations' have been largely centred on the image of the Muslim women. The debate concerning the inherent conflict between Islam and West intensified after 11th of September 2001 with the terrorist attacks in the United States and the invasion of Afghanistan in 2001 and Iraq in 2002. It is during this critical period I interviewed Muslim converts in order to gain first-hand insight into their experiences as Muslims. This paper employs primary data collected during this historical period to examine issues regarding broader issues of identity politics, religious conversion as well as the everyday life experiences of female converts to Islam.

Статья посвящена исследованию городского пространства Гельсингфорса (Хельсинки), столицы Великого княжества Финляндского, как одного из аспектов той реальности, в которой на рубеже XIX ХХ вв. и в период Первой мировой войны оказались военнослужащие российской армии и Балтийского флота. С позиций военной антропологии рассмотрены факторы, обусловившие специфичность восприятия «центра» и «периферии» Гельсингфорса российскими солдатами, матросами и их офицерами. Пространство и ландшафт города виделось им особым миром, отчужденным от русского культурного контекста. Несмотря на государственную и имперскую символику столицы Финляндии, военные выходцы из России остро ощущали оппозицию «восток/запад» на уровне восприятия символов. ; The paper deals with the city space of Helsingfors (Helsinki), the capital of Grand Duchy of Finland, as one of the aspects of the reality common to Russian Army and Baltic Fleet servicemen at the End of 19 th the Very Beginning of the 20 th Centuries and during the World War I. Investigation based on the principles of military anthropology throws light upon the factors which caused the specific way of perception of the "center" and "periphery" of Helsingfors by Russian soldiers, sailors and their officers. The city space and landscape was seen by them as a strange world far from Russian cultural context. Despite the State and Imperial semioticity of the capital of Finland the enlisted men, who have come from Russia, felt deeply the opposition between the "East" and the "West" on the level of perception of symbols.

The transmission of HIV is shaped by individual-environment inter-actions. Social epidemiologic approaches thus seek to capture the dynamic and reciprocal relationships of individual-environment interactions in the production and reduction of risk. This presents considerable methodological, theoretical and disciplinary challenges. Drawing upon four research case studies, we consider how methods and concepts in the social and epidemiologic sciences might be brought together towards understanding HIV risk as an effect of social, cultural and political condition. The case studies draw upon different combinations of methods (qualitative, ethnographic and quantitative) and disciplines (sociology, anthropology and epidemiology) in different social contexts of HIV vulnerability (street settings in Russia, Serbia and North America and a cross-border setting in Mexico) among a range of marginalised high-risk populations (injection drug users and female and transvestite sex workers). These case studies illustrate the relevance of the social science concepts of structural violence and structural vulnerability for a social epidemiology of HIV risk. They also explore how social epidemiologic work can benefit from the mixing of social science methods and theories. We contend that social epidemiology cannot advance in its understanding of structural vulnerability without embracing and relying upon ethnographic and qualitative approaches. We put -forward the linked concepts of structural violence, structural vulnerability and risk environment as building blocks for a theory-informed social epidemiology of HIV risk among marginalised populations.

En el presente texto nos proponemos analizar esta afirmación política desde el punto de vista de una antropología de la traducción. ¿Qué se entiende por 'convivencia' o 'tolerancia' como valor central de la sociedad multicultural? ¿Y cómo los distintos actores sociales traducen este valor? In recent years, several European political leaders have publicly stated that the integration of immigrant minorities (mainly Muslim) has 'failed'. And how do different social actors translate this value? If the link between war and tourism has already received considerable academic and media attention, the spatial representation of war in the tourism sector is still emerging in the fields of cultural geography and anthropology. In this paper I seek to explore the reconversion and touristification of sites traumatised by war – which I have approached using the concept of Traumascape – by presenting a case study in the Balkan region, Sarajevo, the capital of Bosnia-Herzegovina. This city lived through a terrible and traumatic siege during the Balkan wars of the 1990s and is now undergoing a process of post-conflict reconstruction. Tourists are now coming back to the region and many are eager to visit the war heritage left by the conflict. So-called ʽwar tours', leading tourists through war-affected areas, are appearing in the town: the Times of Misfortune tour, The Total siege tour, the MissionImpossible tour and other tours labelled as political tours are taking place in the capital of Bosnia-Herzegovina. The touristification of these sites and of the Balkan wars in general raises many questions in terms of the representation and interpretation of a collective and recent trauma: why are certain sites touristified and others not? Can tourism foster cooperation and reconciliation between divided communities? Can tourism be a vector of expression and information? And finally is the difference between a tourist attraction and a memorial as clear as it is generally stated?

International audience ; The current archaeozoological knowledge in the Caribbean seems ill-matched and fragmented, we should set the Caribbean archaeological research in its historical, epistemological and economical context. Initially practiced by naturalists and scientists from Occident, then by Caribbean, north-American and Europeans academics, this research reflects in one hand the major occidental thoughts in anthropology and human sciences, but on the other hand the political and economical regional diversity of the Caribbean. Indeed, since the beginning of the XX th century, the Europe an excitement about the Tainos of the Greater Antilles allowed both academic (governement and university) and rescue archaeology in the whole Caribbean. It is based on survey and excavation techniques adapted to the tropical environments, as well as on specialized studies, such as Archaeozoology, following European practices. Moreover, an increasing number of excavations occurred in the Caribbean for the past decades. Regional Museums have opened, and European and North American universities and academic institutions have settled in several islands. Researches have developed on subsistence, on environmental exploitation, on technology, on villages organization, on exchanges and chronocultural shifts. Finally, a number of archaeozoological researchers provided micro-regional and regional synthesis for the Caribbean. This paper introduces the particular geography of the Caribbean, a brief history of the pre-Columbian archaeology and archaeozoological researches in the Caribbean, and the major cultural pre-Columbian changes found through Archaeozoology.
