Abstract Understanding which political candidates are elected for office is fundamental to democracy and political science. Whereas there is much agreement that party affiliation is one of the most important candidate characteristics to voters, evidence regarding the gender and race of the candidate is mixed. We suggest voters have lexicographic preferences, meaning they rank their preferences and focus primarily on the candidate's party affiliation. Second-order preferences such as gender and race are mostly necessary when there is a tie in first-order preferences when voters choose between two same-party candidates or have no party information. We show how conjoint experiments can be used to test for lexicographic preferences and use data from a US-representative sample and a pre-registered replication to confirm that in the United States, gender and race are second-order preferences. Lexicographic preferences provide a theoretical lens explaining some of the mixed results of gender and race in the candidate literature.

"No one leaves home unless/Home is the mouth of a shark," read the opening lines of Warsan Shire's poem, "Home." Connecting this powerful poem to the migrant/diasporic literary tradition, this article will introduce a new interpretive framework for the study of migrant literature – one which I call kinopoetics. I modify here Thomas Nail's (2015) concept of 'kinopolitics', or a 'politics of movement', which suggests that 'regimes of social motion' have historically created the material conditions for social and political formation. Kinopolitics, in turn, recognizes the migrant as the primary constitutive figure of social history and transformation. Extending from a politics to a poetics, kinopoetics takes a non-representational approach (derived from Gilles Deleuze, Félix Guattari, and Nigel Thrift) that treats literary texts as aggregates of sensible experience and affective maps of migrant mobility. I will explore, then, how these texts depict the migrant experience of disenfranchisement and expulsion, and how they reflect the 'pedetic social force', or active political power, that migrants are able to enact. Therefore, I emphasize how migrant literature reconfigures the static, place-based poetics built into a regime of borders and nation. I will conclude with a kinopoetic reading of Warsan Shire's poem, showing not only how it foregrounds the centrifugal forces that coerce refugees into exile, but also how the migrant's poetic voice confronts and undermines nationalistic hostilities.

Norway's status is puzzling. Traditionally, Norway has been conceived of as a small power with limited foreign policy alternatives at its disposal due to the constraints of the international system. However, Norway's newfound wealth coupled with its explicit focus and leading figure in multilateral cooperation, diplomacy, international law and peace promotion suggest that Norway is something more than a small power. This thesis applies a modified neoclassical realist framework for conceptualising and analysing status and middle powers. This approach emphasises both the materiality and social aspects of status. It seeks to overcome the bias' that arise from drawing on a singular approach laden with researchers pre-conceptions, this study triangulates the alternative methods measures to pioneer a more rigorous and balanced metric of status measures than has been used before in the status and middle power literature. The thesis shows that Norway's material capabilities, operationalised as hierarchical status resources, have risen significantly the last 40 years, but fail to reach the levels of established middle powers such as Canada and Australia. Norway's behaviour, operationalised as moral authority output, is either larger or equal to that of the established middle powers. Measuring the level of international recognition, however, the thesis shows that despite the increase in hierarchical status resources and consistently high moral authority output, Norway's standing in the international system is actually decreasing. This discrepancy is puzzling given the strong empirical and theoretical link between material capabilities and behaviour on the one hand and status on the other. The thesis suggests that Norway's recognition discrepancy stems from three potential sources: (1)Norway's foreign policy does not stand out compared to the other 'like-minded' countries Canada, Denmark, the Netherlands and Sweden; (2) Recognition is likely to follow a regional pattern, suggesting that states will recognise countries that they perceive are regionally dominant; (3) Recognition and status attribution tend to lag behind the actual hierarchical status resources and moral authority output, suggesting that Norway's low recognition is a direct consequence of low historical standing. ; M-IR
