Explores how the personnel of one agency, the Public Service Commission of West Virginia, formulate and evolve policy as they interact with the public to dispose of a selected category of citizen disputes, disputes which they label 'complaints'. Agency personnel use the dispute as crude material from which policies are refined. Contends that serial policy formulation during dispute processing might be affected by the context of bureaucratic decision making. (SJK)
Our use of media touches on almost all aspects of our social lives, be they friendships, parent-child relationships, emotional lives, or social stereotypes. How we understand ourselves and others is now largely dependent on how we perceive ourselves and others in media, how we interact with one another through mediated channels, and how we share, construct, and understand social issues via our mediated lives. This volume highlights cutting edge scholarship from preeminent scholars in media psychology that examines how media intersect with our social lives in three broad areas: media and the self; media and relationships; and social life in emerging media. The scholars in this volume not only provide insightful and up-to-date examinations of theorizing and research that informs our current understanding of the role of media in our social lives, but they also detail provocative and valuable roadmaps that will form that basis of future scholarship in this crucially important and rapidly evolving media landscape.

The article analyses the problem of contextualisation of the functions of preparatory pre-school education management system in the strategic maanagement trends of the policy of education of the Republic of Lithuania. This is disclosed through the content analysis of the documents on education of the Republic of Lithuania, regulating the activities of preparatory pre-school education system. Based on the theoretical analysis and the results of the content analysis it was concluded that general management principals of systems can be successfully applied in the system of preparatory pre-school education; measures and strategies for the implementation of management reform considerably depend on the political context of the state. The evaluation of the correspondence indicators of preparatory pre-school education management system in the model of strategic development of the state's education enabled to state that management is of functional type because separate functions are emphasized and there is a lack of systemic attitude to management. The role of the policy of education in educational institutions is still responsive and operational. Forming management strategies in the context of accordant policy, accordant management must also manifest itself, however, these tendencies are not regarded.

At the dawn of the Atomic Age, Americans encountered troubling new questions brought about by the nuclear revolution: In a representative democracy, who is responsible for national public safety? How do citizens imagine themselves as members of the national collective when faced with the priority of individual survival? What do nuclear weapons mean for transparency and accountability in government? What role should scientific experts occupy within a democratic government? Nuclear weapons created a new arena for debating individual and collective rights. In turn, it threatened to destabilize the very basis of American citizenship. As Sarah E. Robey shows in Atomic Americans, people negotiated the contours of nuclear citizenship through overlapping public discussions about survival. Policymakers and citizens disagreed about the scale of civil defense programs and other public safety measures. As the public learned more about the dangers of nuclear fallout, critics articulated concerns about whether the federal government was operating in its citizens' best interests. By the early 1960s, a significant antinuclear movement had emerged, which ultimately contributed to the 1963 nuclear testing ban. Atomic Americans tells the story of a thoughtful body politic engaged in rewriting the rubric of rights and responsibilities that made up American citizenship in the Atomic Age

This research explores the intricate interplay of parental involvement in the education of secondary school children in Sri Lanka, with a particular focus on the intertwined influence of parental income and Gender. The study aims to unravel the complex relationships between parental income, Gender, and parental involvement and how these factors intersect within the educational context. The research is grounded in the backdrop of socioeconomic challenges and gender disparities in Sri Lanka's secondary education system, emphasising the importance of parental engagement in addressing these issues. The study's methodology involved a survey-based quantitative research design, and data analysis included descriptive and inferential statistics. The findings reveal that while parental income may not significantly impact overall involvement, it does influence various dimensions of parental participation. Gender-related variations in involvement are also evident, highlighting the importance of addressing disparities in educational support. These insights call for tailored strategies and policies to foster equitable involvement in education. The study offers valuable implications for educational policies and interventions, emphasising the need for comprehensive assessments of parental involvement, contextual analysis, and a focus on promoting equity and inclusivity in education. Ultimately, this research contributes to a deeper understanding of parental involvement in the complex educational landscape of Sri Lanka, with the goal of ensuring equal opportunities and success for all secondary school children, irrespective of their gender or socioeconomic background.
"International politics often requires two or more languages, and the resulting interlingual relations mean translation, either by interpreters who are quite literally in the middle of conversations, or by bilingual statesmen who negotiate internationally in one language and then legitimize domestically in another. Since no two languages are the same, what can be argued in one language may be impossible in another. Political concepts can thus be significantly reformulated in the translation process. State of Translation examines this phenomenon using a case study of how 19th-century Ottoman and later Turkish statesmen struggled with reconciling their arguments in external languages (French, then English) with those in their internal language (Ottoman, later Turkish), and in the process further entangled them. Einar Wigen shows how this process structured social relations between the Ottoman state and its interlocutors, both domestically and internationally, and shaped the dynamics of Turkish relations with Europe"--

In an often violent and dangerous world military defense systems exercise a major role in the ways societies and nations function, develop their aspirations, protect themselves, promote their identities and shape their destinies. As we are only too aware at this time in global history, conflict, war and peace are deeply entangled and often morally ambiguous. This timely volume of essays offers contributions from Europe, Africa and Australia. It raises fundamental issues about the indispensability of the virtues in the military; the relationship between military and the public good; the nature of combatants and a soldier's responsibilities for humanity and peace; moral and spiritual injury; and new challenges for pastoral care in the armed forces.
