Despite increased effort from non-governmental organisations, academics and governments over recent decades, several threats continue to cause species declines and even extinctions. Resource use by a growing human population is a significant driver of biodiversity loss, so conservation scientists need to be interested in the factors that motivate human behaviour. Economic models have been applied to human decision making for many years; however, humans are not financially rational beings and other characteristics of the decision maker (including attitude) and the pressure that people perceive to behave in a certain way (subjective norms) may influence decision making; these are characteristics considered by social psychologists interested in human decision making. We review social-psychology theories of behaviour and how they have been used in the context of conservation and natural-resource management. Many studies focus on general attitudes towards conservation rather than attitudes towards specific behaviours of relevance to conservation and thus have limited value in designing interventions to change specific behaviours (e.g. reduce hunting of a threatened species). By more specifically defining the behaviour of interest, and investigating attitude in the context of other social-psychological predictors of behaviour (e.g. subjective norms, the presence of facilitating factors and moral obligation), behaviours that have an impact on conservation goals will be better understood, allowing for the improved design of interventions to influence them.

The article at hand investigates how changes and additions in affordances across online social networks (OSNs) over the past five years have increasingly framed communicative practices in terms of "attention economies" (Harsin, 2015), inherent competition and the "neoliberal self" (McGuigan, 2014) without presenting viable alternatives. Online social interaction is undergoing constant change: gamification schemes such as Snapstreaks become increasingly explicit, platforms offload features aimed at specific audiences into companion apps like Viber Wink and startups like Bux use social features to turn activities like stock-trading into quasi-communicative activities, thereby becoming specialized OSNs in their own right. Further, the article aims to show how affordance changes in OSNs can a) propagate notions of the neoliberal self, b) constrain the users' means of self-expression, and c) blur the boundaries between OSNs themselves and between online social interaction and other platforms, e.g. dedicated to activities like writing or stock trading. For that purpose, a diachronic affordance analysis is conducted to investigate how social media platforms reframe communicative practices over time, using an updated technological determinism framework (de la Cruz Paragas & Lin, 2016). Social media affordances have been researched in terms of how they affect knowledge sharing (Majchrzak et al., 2013) or political expression (Halpern & Gibbs, 2013). However, these critical uses of affordances to analyze software (Curinga, 2014) only investigate their case at one point in time. Yet, social media startups are characterized by constant 'tweaking' (Bogost, 2016) and shifting alliances (e.g. between Spotify and Tinder or Twitter and Stripe) and these 'evolutionary' dynamics have not been systematically reflected. Rather than looking holistically at one service, the analysis pursues a novel comparative approach, focusing on patterns of affordance change over time, according to patterns such as the ambivalence of online ...

How do subjects act in the presence of discourses that interpret the structure and causes of the crisis that the pandemic exposes? In this paper we are devoted to the analysis of some oral narratives extracted from a qualitative study of argentinean society in which subjects thread hypotheses of interpretation about issues of not only public significance but also related to intimacy, thus expressing an affectively overdetermined verbality, in which emotions and sensitivities act as vehicles of positions contrary to the principles of freedom and equality for all. The hypothesis we develop here argues that, in the face of the global crisis of capitalism, unleashed first by the financial collapse of 2008 and then exacerbated by the Covid-19 catastrophe, individuals do not cease in their quest to construct a sense of the facts as they occur. And for this purpose they use different rhetorical strategies that denote forms of attachment; which, many times, obstruct the critical view and the possibility of transforming the conditions that produce their suffering. In these operations of the use of words, ways of justifying privileges, exclusions and social oppressions are expressed, and in doing so they jeopardize the fundamental conditions of democratic life.
