The monoculture of globalisation has caused a schism between local needs and the promotion of an international cultural identity. This paradigm may initially seem quasi-authentic and even away forward to address the ever-present cultural struggle; yet the question has to be asked - who and what does this monoculture represent? Through a trans-disciplinary meta-analysis I have reviewed the relevant literature. Initially studying the politics of business and its overarching responsibility to make profit. This business ideology is often also reflected in cultural activities. The cultural web has many successful financial players including artists, gatekeepers, and tastemakers. The galleries and museums cater to audiences that want to see, touch, and be part of this monoculture of success. This led to a subsequent research question - so why is this wrong? In many ways there is nothing wrong with globalisation, or creative success, except when the environment is part of the equation. Current environmental literature highlights climate change, biodiversity loss, invasive species, over use of pesticides, pollution, and overpopulation. Culture has to change and acknowledge the local, but also be aware of the international. Instead of accepting the monoculture of profit, we must all look beyond and see a culture where the environment is put first. Artists, cultural intermediaries, and the audience must step forward to play their part in appreciating the need to preserve their local ecosystems. This in the end may be the only way forward to create an international eco-culture to save the global biome.
Assesses foreign policy adaptation strategies adopted by the Mandela and Mbeki administrations including restoring civilian control over security, restructuring the foreign policy establishment, self-promotion as leader of Africa, and in the international community.
The goal of this work is to understand how deep the commercial war between North America and Europe regarding the use of growth hormones in food-producing animals impacted institutional history of global food trade regulation. Between 1980 and the contemporary period (2016), several crises revealed the atypical nature of the European Union ban. As a result, the European Union views legitimacy was contested in the globalization context. The conflict takes places in several arenas. First of all, it constitutes an issue for Europe, which strived to find an interinstitutional agreement on how to legislate on growth hormones at the European level during the 80ies. Then, it has been one of the most talked about disagreements of the General agreement on tariffs and trade (GATT) and the World trade organization (WTO) negotiations from 1987 onwards. Finally, it involves the CodexAlimentarius Commission, the international organization in charge of setting food standards. In each of these institutions, the beef-hormones conflict management goes with important institutional changes: new specific units, working principles and procedures were created. Thus, my work aimed to precisely describe what consequences the beef-hormones conflict might have had on any of these institutions. As a result, I show how this specific case contributed to the instauration of internationalfood trade regulation. My work relies on a socio-historical inquiry based on diverse and rich empirical data, in order to cover the three aforesaid institutions between 1980 and 2016. I constituted a documentary corpus from institutional archives, and I performed about thirty sociological interviews. I spent several hundreds of hours realizing ethnographing observation, most of which being facilitated by my belonging to the ministry of agriculture's services. Analysis of this data emphasizes the transforming role of the beef-hormones conflict at an international scale. The conflict first convinced all the stakeholders that it was crucial to strengthen supranational institutions (be it at the European or at the global level). It also allowed to test newly created instruments in their practical functioning. From this prospective, the beef-hormones conflict management reveals the different actors' internationalrelations perceptions and their evolution during the studied period. Finally, as the beef-hormones conflict has constituted a pattern to the establishment of negotiation strategies, it became a cultural reference structuring an international community. It is therefore a socializing factor. My inquiry also enables a better understanding of private actors' expectations about international regulation. Veterinary drug industries are actively involved in the institutional discussions surrounding the beef-hormones case, requesting for binding international food trade standards. They are more particularly interested in the activity of standard-setting bodies like Codex.

The proliferation and trafficking of small arms and light weapons (SALW) in Africa is partly attributable to weak national controls, the porosity of state borders, and ongoing armed conflict on the continent. To address these problems a number of initiatives have been undertaken by states, regional organisations, and other various implementing agencies with the aim of enhancing small arms control. This report examines these initiatives over a ten year period (2005–2015) in sixteen countries across the Greater Sahel region and generates a set of lessons learned. These lessons cover topics such as project duplication, the impact of internal donor restructuring, and the importance of identifying the needs and implementing capacities of local partners. While these lessons are intended to contribute to the existing body of research on small arms control, they are also, more importantly, intended to help donors and practitioners improve project design and impact.
This book is a compilation of papers presented at the International Transformation Conference in Stockholm, Swweden on June 2-3, 2009. The conference was hosted by the Swedish Defence Research Agency at their Division of Information Systems in Kista. The papers are organized according to the categories of culture, interagency, transformation initiatives, leadership, and adaptive organizations. This sequence was chosen to group papers with common themes so that readers could follow the logic and findings of each paper more easily. The book represents the views of the authors, most of whom are members of the Internatinal transformation Chairs Network that was founded in the United States in 2004 by retired Vice Admiral Arthyr K. Cebrowski, who then served as the Director of the U.S. Department of Deeefense Office of Force Transformation. Since that time, the organization had added members from the United Kingdom,Sweden, Australia, Singapore, and NATO. The mision of the International Chairs Network is to provide a forum ro challenge thinkingm leverage shared knowledge, and inform the debate about the international security implications of global transformation. The vision of the group is that the efforts of these types of activities will ultimately result in a group of national security leaders who are prepared for a future filled with complexity, chaos, and surprise. Publication of this book is one step in the process of reaching this goal. We hope that this book is valuable to you as you seek to transform your part of the world.
