Angaben über Einkommen und Ausgaben der Haushalte seit Mitte des 19. Jahrhunderts werden oft als Illustrationen in sozialhistorischen Schriften benutzt, aber selten systematisch analysiert. Indem sie als zwei große Datenmassen individueller Haushaltspläne dargestellt werden, wird auf neue komparative Anwendungsmöglichkeiten für diese bedeutenden Quellen mikro-ökonomischer und Sozialgeschichte hingewiesen. Die Datenbasis über Deutschland berücksichtigt Vergleiche zwischen Berufsgruppen und speziell ausgewählten Gruppen über eine Zeitspanne von 1903 und 1937 hinweg. Die andere Datensammlung, die zuerst präsentiert wird, ist aus Daten von 1889/90 zusammengestellt und deckt die USA genauso ab wie Belgien, Frankreich, Deutschland, Großbritannien und die Schweiz. Damit fügt sie eine internationale und interethnische Dimension hinzu. Die Quellen, Zusammenstellungen und Begrenzungen der Datensammlungen werden getrennt dargestellt. Neuere Studien werden abschließend zusammen mit Perspektiven für ein geplantes Forschungsprojekt dargestellt. (KWübers.)

Theprocess of European integration is posing a challenge to scholars in the humanities and the social sciences to rethink their frames of analysis. The once dominant nation-state has lost relevance while transnational processes and exchanges are receiving greater attention. This is not only true for the social sciences and economics, but also for history. The closer the European states are integrated, the more questions about Europe's past are asked. But what is European history, and upon which methods and units of analysis can it be built? Is it the sum of national histories, just as the EU is a union of nation-states, or is it something more? Since no one subject of European history can possibly encompass all countries on the continent, it is clear that independent of the general topic there needs to be a certain selection of studies about more than one local or national case. If those studies, no matter whether they cover political, social, or cultural history, are to be synthesized on a European level, comparisons need to be made at a certain stage of any given work. The same holds true for the history of Central Europe, an area with a particularly high degree of internal differentiation.

On April 1, 1948, following lengthy discussion of methods of implementing the General Assembly resolution of November 29, 1947, concerning the partition of Palestine, the Security Council approved a resolution calling for the convening of a special session of the Assembly. The resolution requested the Secretary General "in accordance with Article 20 of the United Nations Charter, to convoke a special session of the General Assembly to consider further the question of the future government of Palestine."

Report of the Special Committee on the Problem of Hungary: The Special Committee on the Problem of Hungary, at its last meeting, June 7, 1957, adopted its report to the General Assembly. The committee, composed of representatives of Australia, Ceylon, Denmark, Tunisia, and Uruguay, had been appointed by the General Assembly at its second emergency special session to provide information regarding the situation created by Soviet intervention in the internal affairs of Hungary as well as the developments relating to the Assembly's recommendations on this subject. The report, based on available documentation and the testimony of in witnesses, dealt with a brief history of the Hungarian uprising, the movement as seen by the Soviet Union and by the government of Janos Kadar, the Soviet military intervention and its political background, the effects of the use or threat of use of force on the political independence of Hungary, and specific acts violating other rights of the Hungarian people. The committee believed that the uprising in October and November 1956 had been a spontaneous, improvised national movement, stemming from resentments caused by longstanding grievances, particularly against the inferior status of Hungary in relation to the Soviet Union. The thesis put forth by the Soviet Union and the Kadar government that the uprising had been fomented by Hungarian reactionary circles and strengthened by western "imperialists" was unacceptable to the committee, which felt that the movement had been led by students, workers, soldiers and intellectuals, who had demanded, inter alia, that democratic socialism should be the basis of the Hungarian political structure and that such social achievements as land reform should be safeguarded. Reporting that Soviet authorities had taken steps as early as October 20 to make armed intervention possible, the committee felt that it could not say whether the Soviets had anticipated the occurrence. It stressed, however, that the Warsaw Treaty did not provide for Soviet armed intervention to dictate political developments within any signatory's frontiers.

"This manuscript argues for the importance of Günter Grass as a political thinker in addition to his status as a novelist and public intellectual, capable of forming ethical responses to contemporary issues like neoliberalism and place of the petit bourgeoisie in social life. I define Grass's trajectory as a thinker through his novels and speeches. Primarily, I draw attention to the role memory plays in Grass's thought: that his work represented an intellectual and aesthetic response to the role Nazism continued to play in West German politics in the post war era. To Grass, Nazism represented a resurgent threat unaddressed following the end of World War II. Later, Grass amended his concept of memory politics to address neoliberal capitalism, reiterating his radicalism and affirming the need for German society to resist the rise of extreme ideologies"--

The first part of the sixteenth session of the General Assembly met at UN Headquarters from September 19 through December 20, 1961, when it was adjourned. The second part of the session was to begin on January 15, 1962. At the opening plenary meeting a moment of silence was observed as a tribute to the memory of the late Secretary-General and of the devoted officers of the UN who died with him. At the 1046th meeting, upon recommendation of the Security Council, the Assembly appointed U Thant as acting Secretary-General for a term of office ending on April 10, 1963.

The eleventh session of the General Assembly reconvened, after the Christmas recess, on January 2, 1957. At its 668th meeting on March 8 it adopted by 65 votes to 0 with 6 abstentions a resolution stating that it had completed all the items on the agenda of the eleventh session with the exception of the questions considered by the first and second emergency special sessions. It decided to adjourn temporarily and to authorize the President of the Assembly, in consultation with the Secretary-General and with Member states, to reconvene the General Assembly as necessary in order to consider further those items.
