Plain English summary The article analyses the process of securing permissions for members of the public (we refer to them as "research partners") and academics involved in a qualitative study of public involvement in research (PIR) across eight health sciences projects in England and Wales. All researchers, including research partners, need to obtain a "research passport" from UK NHS trusts where they intend to carry out research. The article presents the experiences and observations of the authors, who all went through the process. Research partners encountered many challenges, as the overall bureaucratic procedures proved burdensome. The effects were felt by the academics too who had to manage the whole process. This influenced the way research partners and academics built social and personal relationships required for the successful conduct of the project. We also discuss the tensions that emerged around the issue of whether research partners should be treated as a professional category on their own, and other issues that influenced the PIR processes. In the concluding section, we make a number of practical recommendations. Project teams should allow enough time to go through all the hurdles and steps required for institutional permissions, and should plan in advance for the right amount of time and capacity needed from project leaders and administrators. Bureaucratic and organisational processes involved in PIR can sometimes produce unanticipated and unwanted negative effects on research partners. Our final recommendation to policy makers is to focus their efforts on making PIR bureaucracy more inclusive and ultimately more democratic. AbstractThis qualitative study examines how 17 elementary school counsellors perceive their work with out‐of‐home foster‐care children. Three main themes emerged from the in‐depth semi‐structured interviews, highlighting the challenges and conflicts faced by these counsellors: (1) shying away from providing deep therapy but helping with specific issues, (2) the professional and ethical dilemmas of having to report to the authorities about foster families' domestic neglect or abuse while maintaining positive work relationships with these families and the children and (3) prevailing admiration towards the foster parents. The study recommends comprehensive training for school counsellors, administrators and staff as well as professional peer‐support groups for counsellors.

This qualitative study explored parents' perspectives on the collateral consequences of youth sexual offending on siblings through the analysis of interview data among 16 caregivers from 10 Canadian families. Using thematic coding procedures, findings indicated that parents identified a range of safety, emotional and interpersonal impacts on siblings beginning with the criminal justice and child welfare investigations of the sexual offending and extending to siblings' relationships with the offending youth, their caregivers and other relatives. Results demonstrate the need for greater acknowledgement of, and parent‐informed interventions that specifically address the impact of youth sexual offending on siblings by professionals and non‐professionals (e.g. relatives) alike.

This paper reviews the history of local professional associations in Morocco under the French Protectorate and focuses on the period of Vichy rule in the colony (1940-1942). It examines the partial application of corporatism in Morocco as Vichy's preferred method of professional organization, which was expected to turn local attention away from a perceived nationalism to a seemingly benign economic activity. By investigating a local corporatist association operating in those years, this paper shows that the corporatist project unwittingly turned into a nationalist one not of its own making. The paper further examines the relationships between economy, colonialism, nationalism, racism, and Muslim-Jewish relations in Morocco during the Vichy period.

Since the late 1960s, the political aspect of planned organizational change has received considerable attention. But despite the increasing acceptance of the fact that organizational change is inextricably linked with organizational politics, organization development (OD) professionals have continued to be cautious in grappling with the political realities involved in the implementation of planned organizational change. This article conceptualizes planned organizational change as a continuum of relationships with three degrees or levels of change. A sequential approach to the political involvement of OD professionals has been developed and an analytical framework has been presented that calls for matching degrees of political involvement to the level of change desired.

A chronology of significant events in the development of corporate financial reporting standards and practices is presented. The introductory comments to the various sections direct attention to some of the main patterns and trends in that development and provide the framework in which the listing of events is to be interpreted. The particularly significant domestic sources of influence are the legislative and professional activities in Ontario and, in more recent times, the activities of the Canadian Institute of Chartered Accountants. External influences have been—not unexpectedly—the traditions of English Company law and the close professional, institutional and economic relationships with the United States. Some internationally significant developments unique to Canada are indicated.

This article examines the role and characteristics of professional client partners in the value co-creation process. Previous literature has studied the role of clients in the co-creation process; however, the effects of different characteristics of clients on co-creation of value are less clear. This study examines these through a research design comprising depth multiple case studies of client relationships with professional service firms (PSFs). Empirical primary data were collected from in situ in-depth interviews with senior account managers in leading advertising agencies in Spain. Our initial results suggested that the type of clients and their characteristics was important for determining the potential and approach to managing their relationships for positive value creation. Further analysis identified key client characteristics and a classification of four types of clients: low involved novice clients, highly involved novice clients, control-concerned expert clients, and integration-concerned expert clients. We also found that not all client relationships resulted in positive value creation because some eventually produce detrimental or negative value consequence. We conceptualize this as the value depletion circle (VDC) and discuss the practical and theoretical implications of this phenomenon. Finally, alternative service relationships scenarios are described which can help institutions understand success and failure in their value creation relations and practices with clients and partners of different types. The contribution of this article is threefold. First, it analyses theoretically the role of client in the service co-creation process. Second, our multi-case study develops a classification of PSF clients into four categories. Third, we explain how dealing with called complex clients may generate a vicious circle, the VDC, which in the long run can seriously damage the sector image.

The objective of this study is to analyze the effects of the set of measures
adopted by the labor reform of 2017 on the generation of employment and
income in Brazil. The study is based on the literature that highlights the
importance of structural change in employment as a key element for economic
growth and development, emphasizing that in Brazil, there is still a view
that the labor market should take on more flexible work relationships to
advance in the improvement of jobs, levels of employment, productivity and
income. Subsequently, the article summarizes and critically comments on the
main measures of the labor law reforms adopted in post-2017 Brazil. Finally,
it presents an analysis of the behavior of the labor market in Brazil
between 2012 and 2022 based on data from the PNADC/IBGE survey. The main
results of the survey confirm that the labor reform of 2017 has not shown
advances in labor market indicators or in the main macroeconomic aggregates
of the country. In contrast, the data suggest deterioration in the
indicators of employment, income and allocation of workers in occupations
with low productivity and income characteristics.

Despite reservoirs of moral discourse about duties in religious communities, professional caregiving traditions, and philosophical perspectives, the dominant moral language in contemporary biomedical ethics is that of `rights'. The implementation of the ongoing anti-money laundering/counter-terrorism financing (AML/CTF) drive within the private sector reflects a tension between the logic of state sovereignty and that of neoliberal governmentality. In this article, we show that the main concrete output of two decades of global policy in this area is found in the routinization of professional interactions between banks and law enforcement agencies. Banks recruit former law enforcement officials and attempt to establish informal ties with the police or intelligence bodies. They are also actively involved in intelligence-led policing missions and have become embedded in interdependent relationships with law enforcement agencies. Drawing on data from 75 interviews conducted with AML/CTF professionals within France, the article shows how new everyday professional routines in the banking sector reflect governmentality in the making.

Professional Sport 'à la française', a Possible Inspiration for a Future European Model ?
In France, the State has intervened in sporting matters since the 1940s, according to a technique of delegation of power to private organisations, i.e. sporting federations. France has not adopted legislation specifically relating to sporting professionals, notably in the context of their working relationships, in a situation, moreover, where European influences have had the effect of limiting the degree of autonomy for intervention by each member state, including in the area of sports. Where the State does intervene in France it does so in the name of public policy which includes economic factors (such as intervention in the structure of professional clubs and in relation to resources, notably television rights), individual factors (such as defending the individual) and social factors (such as the status of sporting agents and that of youngsters who practise sport).

The Procter & Gamble Company spent 30 years and an estimated $500 million to bring its non-digestible fat substitute, olestra, to market. The Food and Drug Administration approved olestra as a food additive but requires products containing olestra to carry a warning statement about its potential effects on gastrointestinal function. In obtaining approval for olestra, P&G conducted a lengthy, persistent, and comprehensive campaign to enlist support from members of Congress; FDA staff; and food, nutrition, and health professionals. This campaign raises larger questions about corporate influence on government policies, and the relationships of corporations to health professionals. To address these larger concerns, the author reviews the history of olestra's approval; describes P&G's campaign to obtain support from FDA and Congress, to defend olestra against critics, and to market it to professionals, the press, and consumers; and suggests implications for public health policies.

As America's population ages and becomes more ethnically diverse, there is growing need for social workers to treat not only individuals afflicted with dementia and their families, but to also understand this illness through the eyes of different ethnic groups. Abstract
This qualitative study explores heterosexual teen girls' perceptions of parental support in abusive dating relationships during high school. Teen girls are at high risk for dating violence. Symbolic interaction theory asserts that meaning is assigned through our interactions, and these assigned meanings then influence our behavior. Findings demonstrate that teen girls assign meaning to dating and abuse, which is often reflective of traditional gender stereotypes, through their interactions with their boyfriends. However, due to the life course, parents of teens are in a unique position to provide different meanings that foster healthier dating relationships. Analysis of semistructured retrospective interviews found that, like adults, teen victims perceived parents' support to be inconsistent. Parents who provided support, such as ensuring safety, giving advice, and involving other professionals, played an instrumental role in helping teen girls end abusive dating relationships. Social workers should engage parents, schools, and peers in prevention education efforts that challenge gender norms and provide training on how to effectively intervene and provide support to teens that are experiencing abuse in their dating relationships.

Purpose
– Homelessness often results from the loss of social networks and individuals are tested in being able to sustain or develop new positive social networks necessary to rebuild lives. The purpose of this paper is to present findings from an exploratory study which investigated how different agencies and professionals support people experiencing multiple exclusion homelessness (MEH) to develop and maintain their social networks amid other competing priorities, such as reducing substance misuse and re-offending.


Design/methodology/approach
– The study was undertaken in England 2010-2011 in three case study sites. Data were collected in 76 interviews with practitioners and managers, from disciplines including housing support, social work, criminal justice, mental health and substance misuse services. Totally, 56 interviews and five focus groups were also undertaken with people with experiences of MEH. Data were analysed thematically. Data from one site in particular permitted a focus on personal relationships and social networks which were seen as beneficial but also potentially problematic. These data are drawn upon to reflect on the implications for housing providers and practitioners.


Findings
– While multiple factors had often led to the loss of social networks among homeless people, findings revealed that practitioners working with homeless people may be able to promote existing social networks, such as partnerships, help develop new ones, and support people withdrawing from less positive relationships. The authors conclude that practitioners should be alert to structural changes that threaten social networks and may need to enhance skills in creating opportunities to foster existing positive relationships in direct work with their clients and in collaboration with other professionals. The need to be careful of blurring professional boundaries is also observed.


Practical implications
– This paper suggests approaches that may encourage practitioner reflection and commissioning practice in achieving good outcomes for people with experiences of MEH by highlighting the importance of social networks and the potential for practitioners to foster supportive relationships.


Originality/value
– This paper considers the often under-researched area of day-to-day engagement with social networks and the implications of working to support these as part of the role of homelessness services. While drawing primarily on recent research in England the themes raised will have wider relevance to housing and care services generally.
