Postcolonialism and science fiction
Postcolonialism and Science Fiction explores intersections and interactions between the genre of science fiction and the theory and practice of postcolonialism, concentrating primarily on contemporary science fiction from the 1950s to the present day. The book argues that several of the foundational myths of science fiction -- the 'other', or the stranger, and the strange and foreign land -- are shared at the heart of colonialism, and that postcolonial science fiction has developed unique and creative ways of overcoming and dispelling these myths. Using close readings and thematic studies, ranging from lively discussions of Japanese and Canadian science fiction to a thorough and incisive deconstruction of race and (post)colonialism in the online game World of Warcraft, Postcolonialism and Science Fiction is the first comprehensive study of the complex and developing relationship between the two areas. It will be of interest to fans, researchers, students and anyone else interested in science fiction, postcolonial studies, or both

AbstractContrary to the claims of the Central Intelligence Agency (CIA) that its torture program was scientific, the program was not based on biology or any other science. Instead, the George W. Bush administration veneered the program's justification with a patina of pseudoscience, ignoring the actual biology of torturing human brains. We reconstruct the Bush administration's decision-making process to establish that the policy decision to use torture took place in the immediate aftermath of the 9/11 attacks without any investigation into its efficacy. We then present the pseudoscientific model of torture sold to the CIA, show why this ad hoc model amounted to pseudoscience, and then catalog what the actual science of torturing human brains—available in 2001—reveals about the practice. We conclude with a discussion of how a process incorporating countervailing evidence might prevent a policy going forward that is contrary to law, ethics, and evidence.

Out! and New Queer Indian Literature
What, exactly, constitutes a new queer literature in India? This essay attempts to examine this question by focusing on works written in the twenty-first century, with particular attention given to two short stories from the 2012 anthology Out! Stories from the New Queer India, edited by Minal Hajratwala: Sunny Singh's "A Cup Full of Jasmine Oil" and Ashish Sawhny's "Nimbooda, Nimbooda, Nimbooda." Intended as neither a legal nor a historical study, this essay considers the interplay of literary cultural production and real-world, watershed events. Through asking questions such as "What is 'new' about these twenty-first century works?" and "How are they 'queer'?" I seek to map the politics of location in Singh's and Sawhny's texts. More generally, I consider contemporary queer Indian literature, particularly with regard to its focus on what I would term "visible-invisibility"—the contradictory, complex, time-and-place-specific discourses that construct queer Indian subjects across diverse religious, gender, and community contexts.[1][1] I would like to extend a special thank you to Rulmini Panda and Anneli Strutt.
