Recent tensions at the governmental level do not yet add up to a crisis in GermanAmerican relations. But political divergences and dissonances are an expression of structural conflicts in the transatlantic relationship that have been intensified by the post-September 11 strategy shift in American global policy. The emerging paradigm shift in U.S. foreign policy confronts Germany's policy toward the United States with new challenges. These challenges cannot be mastered through either unreflective opposition or reflexive loyalty; rather, they require a strategically conscious approach toward the United States.(SWP Comments / SWP)
The etiology and treatment of substance abuse are matters of great concern in applied social science. This special issue of the International Journal of Sociology and Social Policy consists of a collection of papers on these matters presented in regular sessions on Alcohol and Drugs of the American Sociological Association at the 1995 meetings. Also included are models for study of the progression of substance abusing careers and for the evolution of drug alcohol treatment developed by the panels' discussant and co‐editor of this issue, Mark Peyrot.
THE SHIFT FROM IDEOLOGICAL POLITICS TO POLITICS DOMINATED BY THE MEDIA IS CHARACTERIZED BY KUNDERA AS THE RISE OF IMAGOLOGY. IN HABERMAS'S TERMS, IMAGOLOGY CONTRIBUTES TO THE SYSTEMATIC DISTORTION OF COMMUNICATION AND IMPOVERISHES POLITICS BY UNDERMINING CRITICAL PUBLIC REASONING. THIS PAPER ARGUES THAT DELIBERATIVE DEMOCRACY AS AN ANTIDOTE TO IMAGOLOGY ERRS BY ASSUMING THAT CRITICAL REASONING MUST TAKE THE FORM OF VERBAL ARGUMENTATION.
"A topical study of crowd dynamics and the relationships of crowds to political power in Tunisia, Libya and Algeria, this book takes predominant crowd theory to task questioning received ideas about 'mob psychology' that remain prevalent today. One central theme of the book is gender, providing an in-depth look at women's participation in the recent uprisings and the subsequent gender-related aspects of political transitions. The social and political dynamics of tribalism and other forms of group belonging are raised in the book, including analysis and discussions with Libyan regional tribal chiefs, Libyan and Tunisian tribal members and citizens regarding their notions of tribal belonging. Crowd language is also central to the book's discussion of how crowds represent themselves, how we as observers represent crowds, and how crowds confront languages of authoritarianism and subjugation. Crowds and Politics in North Africa includes dozens of interviews with crowd participants and key civil society actors from Tunisia, Libya and Algeria. Among these, there are numerous interviews with Benghazi residents, activists and tribal leaders as one of the original case studies in the book is the crowds during and after the attack on the US consular installation in Benghazi Libya. A valuable resource, this book will be of use to students and scholars with an interest in the Middle East and Politics more broadly"--

"For many Americans, the emergence of a "porno chic" culture provided an opportunity to embrace the sexual revolution by attending a film like Deep Throat (1972) or leafing through an erotic magazine like Penthouse. By the 1980s, this pornographic moment was beaten back by the rise of Reagan-era political conservatism and feminist anti-pornography sentiment. This volume places pornography at the heart of the 1970s American experience, exploring lesser-known forms of pornography from the decade, such as a new, vibrant gay porn genre; transsexual/female impersonator magazines; and pornography for new users, including women and conservative Christians. The collection also explores the rise of a culture of porn film auteurs and stars as well as the transition from film to video. As the corpus of adult ephemera of the 1970s disintegrates, much of it never to be professionally restored and archived, these essays seek to document what pornography meant to its producers and consumers at a pivotal moment."
