Paper presented at the UACES conference, Cork, 1-3 September 2014Panel 812 'Europeanisation, Internationalisation and the Transformation of European Higher Education' ; The transformations of higher education (HE) systems in Central and Eastern Europe (CEE) have come about as a result of the new liberal economic and political agenda that has prevailed since the fall of communism, combined with the impact of EU accession conditions. On the eve of accession, the Bologna Process and the Lisbon Strategy made policy makers from candidate states increasingly receptive to European recommendations. This said, the paper challenges existing explanations of Europeanisation as a linear process. It points out that the transformations of HE institutions have a global dimension, because they have been promoted by international organisations active in the field of education. They have been shaped by global trends such as the growing influence of international rankings. The paper focuses on the domestic uses of external recommendations. It sheds light on domestic actor configurations and games. It shows how policy entrepreneurs make strategic uses of European or other external models according to their priorities. This process may generate tensions and lead to a reconfiguration of power relations. In an attempt to refine the Europeanisation perspective, my paper will examine alternative explanations of the dynamics of change, such as the inspiration drawn from models from outside the EU or references to the narratives of international competition promoted by international organisations.

Field educators and social work students use technology in various realms of practice, including provision of services to clients and provision of supervision for students. This article identifies how professional boundary issues may arise when social workers, field educators, or students use technology. This article also explores four ways that field educators can educate and support students in relation to pre-empting and managing technology-related boundary issues: policy clarification, role modeling through interactions with clients and others, role modeling within supervisory relationship, and advocacy.

This book focuses on one of the most successful photography exhibitions in history, The Family of Man. With The Family of Man as its reference point, this collection of essays takes a closer look at visual and material objects. It examines their relevance for educational issues and exhibition designs. We understand these issues in their broadest sense to encompass processes of citizenship and identity formation and the adoption and/or preservation of ethical and political values with effects that range from the micro to the macro, from the national to the international level. The overall hypothesis of this volume is that images, objects and designs were created and employed as performers and performances that interacted with and attracted mass audiences. This book not only looks at how the presentational, representational and social power of images, objects and designs was deliberately used by political and cultural stakeholders during the mid-1950s, but also how these technologies of display travelled through time and space and, as historical objects, interacted—and continue to interact—with new contexts and audiences.

PurposeThe purpose of this paper is to analyse gender representation in leadership and management in further and higher education organisations. It does this, through the lens of two perspectives on bureaucratic representation, a "liberal democratic" perspective and an alternative view which states that bureaucracies are not necessarily gender blind or women friendly. The paper reviews the reform and managerial environments, vertical and horizontal gender patterns in the sectors; undertakes empirical research which surveys staff in six case study institutions seeking responses on job roles and activities, career motivators and inhibitors, supportiveness of line managers, perceptions of organisational leadership and culture with regard to gender equality and career advance.Design/methodology/approachSecondary data were used from a variety of sources. Primary data were based on all staff surveys using online software symbolic network analysis program in case study institutions withn=4,522, representing one quarter of the population.FindingsNon‐executive levels of management in both sectors were highly gendered and unrepresentative of the population. Vertical segregation was found at executive level too, though less in colleges than universities. In higher education, horizontal gendering – in subject areas – and the emphasis on subject knowledge and background with the connected gender segregation of research activity, played a crucial role in unequal gender representation patterns. In colleges, while there was horizontal subject‐based segregation, the lesser importance of research/subject background in the career dynamic has created opportunities to de‐couple subject background and career opportunity. Part‐time working, especially in colleges, had mixed effects in gender career terms. The research showed that in universities women spent greater proportions of time in teaching and administrationvis‐a‐visresearch compared to men. Work life balance was not a career inhibitor for women in higher education but was for women in colleges. Some other key similarities and differences in perceptions between men and women in both sectors are outlined, perhaps the most striking of which was that women in both sectors, while agreeing that opportunities policies are equal and fair, felt that institutional leadership could do more to advance the careers of women; men did not.Originality/valueThis is the first study of its kind to compare and contrast college and university sectors, and makes a significant contribution to understanding of gender representation in organisations. While, there are similarities between the sectors, this research has highlighted major differences which have importance for research, policy and managerial practice. The paper, in its conclusion, aims to stimulate action by suggesting some practical initiatives, based on the research.

From the outset, it is necessary to understand what the purposes of higher education are. A clear understanding will shape the responses of institutions and individuals to the need for strategic planning and management. The compiled papers asses that most universities and institutions of higher education now operate in a highly competitive environment. In this regard, there is strong competition for student recruitment, for research funds, and for the best staff. Such competition is sometimes encouraged by governments and funding bodies. Every school's record reveals both its strengths and weaknesses. The keeping of records is one of the duties of school administrators. Maintaining complete and accurate records of all significant school-related occurrences is necessary. This study investigated the Influence of School Records on Principals' Administrative Effectiveness in Bichi Education Zone of Kano state, Nigeria. Specifically, the study sought to determine the influence of statutory and non-statutory records on principals' administrative effectiveness, how records management practice influences principals' administrative effectiveness, and determine the strategies for improving record management practice in senior secondary schools in Bichi education zone of Kano state. Four research questions guided the study, and four null hypotheses were tested at a 0.05 level of significance. The study adopted a descriptive survey design. The target population was 409 principals and teachers. Proportionate and simple random sampling was used for the sampling. The instrument for data collection was named: School Records and Principals' Administrative Effectiveness Questionnaire (SRPAEQ). Two experts validated the instrument. A 38 items-structured questionnaire was subjected to statistical analysis using mean and standard deviation for the research questions and Chi-square for testing the hypotheses. The study revealed that statutory records not only help in achieving administrative effectiveness but also provide growth for principals' efficiency. The result of the study further showed that non-statutory records with particular emphasis on the mode of storing and retrieving Data influence the principals' administrative effectiveness, and finally, the result proved that records management practice by Principals has a great influence on principals' administrative effectiveness in Senior Secondary Schools in Bichi Education Zone of Kano State, Nigeria. The following recommendations were made: Effective school records maintenance policy should be provided to ensure efficient and effective school records management, School administrators should be friendly with their subordinates and build confidence in them for the optimum attainment of school goals, Finally, schools should be adequately supplied with information communication systems capable of storing and retrieving information easily.
