"Muhammad Yunus is that rare thing: a bona fide visionary. His dream is the total eradication of poverty from the world. Events in 2005 such as the G8 Summit in Gleneagles and the Make Poverty History campaign have been successful in focusing the public's attention on the problem of world poverty. Despite these high-profile events and consistently high levels of public support for development assistance programmes, people's understanding of poverty and development issues remains shallow and levels of official development aid for many OECD countries fall well below the 0.7 per cent GDP goal. In this article we examine what factors drive individual-level attitudes of concern for poverty, how the media portray poverty in developing countries and how media portrayal affects individuals' concern for poverty. Drawing on extant literature on motivations for aid, we argue that individual concern for poverty can stem from self-interest or moral drivers. However, the implications of the different drivers do not appear to be well understood, yet they have important consequences for DFID and the OECD; strategies based on preference-accommodation rather than preference-shaping strategies may undermine rather than strengthen public concern for poverty. The data for the article come from DFID's 2005 Omnibus survey of public attitudes towards development and a content analysis of eight UK newspapers from January to December 2005. Using a binary logistic regression model we estimate individual concern for poverty in developing countries as a function of moral judgements, self-interest, awareness of poverty and assessments of achieving Millennium Development Goals, controlling for a host of demographic variables. Results from the content analysis show that economic and political frames dominate media coverage of poverty in developing countries. We find differential effects for moral and self-interested attitudes on concern for poverty; moral attitudes are positively related to concern, whereas self-interested attitudes are negatively related to concern. Questa tesi si sviluppa secondo tre saggi empirici, indagando il rapporto tra spazio e povertà in un contesto urbano industrializzato, Milano. Il primo saggio, accogliendo lo schema concettuale unificante per l'analisi del suddetto rapporto illustrato in Chiappero-Martinetti, Moroni e Nuvolati (forthcoming), suggerisce un sistema di 27 indicatori riferito a 3 dimensioni chiave del benessere (infrastrutturale-ambientale, economica e socio-simbolica), ne testa la robustezza e fornisce l'indicazione di un profilo di povertà per ciascuna delle ex 20 zone di decentramento. Il secondo saggio considera esclusivamente la dimensione economica, estendendo il campo di indagine alle 180 aree funzionali. Da questa analisi si ottiene che, dal 2000 al 2006, il reddito medio procapite per componenti equivalenti risulta autocorrelato in modo significativo, secondo diversi regimi di concentrazione (cluster spaziali tipici e outlier spaziali atipici). Il terzo saggio considera le 3 dimensioni menzionate nel primo contributo, riferite alle 180 aree funzionali. All'approccio theory driven se ne contrappone uno data-driven, che consente di specificare la relazione che intercorre tra le variabili e le sottodimensioni del benessere, identificare sei distinti gruppi di cluster sulla base delle misure sintetiche ottenute e suggerire un profilo di policy che combini interventi a favore delle persone e dei contesti di vita. ; This thesis is developed under three empirical essays, investigating the linkage between space and poverty in the urban industrialized Milan. The first essay, accepting the unifying conceptual framework for the analysis of such linkage issued by Chiappero-Martinetti, Moroni and Nuvolati (forthcoming), suggests a system of 27 indicators related to 3 key dimensions of wellbeing (physical, economic and social ), tests its robustness and provides the indication of a poverty profile for each of the former 20 areas of decentralization. The second essay considers only the economic dimension, extending the investigation to the 180 "aree funzionali". From this analysis we find that, from 2000 to 2006, the average per capita income per equivalent components is significantly autocorrelated, according to various concentration schemes (typical spatial clusters, atypical spatial outliers). The third essay considers the three dimensions mentioned in the first contribution but related to the 180 "aree funzionali". In opposition to that theory-driven, this data-driven approach allows to specify the relationship between the variables and sub-dimensions of wellbeing, to identify six distinct cluster groups on the basis of the synthetic measures obtained and to suggest a policy profile combining people and area-based interventions.

Economy of Pakistan suffered by multiple socio-economical issues whereas; development of any country's economy highly depends on proper utilization of human resource. Education is the important source of human resource development and literacy is the basic component of education. Government of Pakistan took many initiatives to overcome the problem of low access to education. However, there are various factors that affects education scenario in the country. Therefore, this research evaluates the trend in literacy rate in Pakistan and finds out the macro economical issues that influences literacy rate in Pakistan. Study found that in Pakistan literacy rate remain low furthermore, regional and gender discrimination also found in access to education. Empirical results show that high growth in population, poverty and short of government attention (such as insufficient government expending for education sector) are the significant factors for low literacy rate in Pakistan

This paper examines the relationship between disability and poverty at a health-demographic surveillance site in Viet Nam using alternative measures of disability severity. Analysis of the site population (n=65400) is combined with interviews of 27 households containing members with disabilities. Results show that disability severity is positively associated with poverty. Results support recent efforts of the Vietnamese government to extend programmes of social protection for households containing members with severe disabilities. However, a higher level of disability targeting is required, both in terms of eligibility and of benefit levels.

Toexamine and explain the Poverty Reduction Model that is more in line withthe local wisdom of the people of South Sulawesi especially in thecommunity in Kabupaten Gowa. It is intended to find a model that fits theneeds and conditions of the poor communities in South Sulawesi,especially in Gowa so that it can be applied to poverty alleviation efforts inthe future. An interview and observation were done to 20 people from thepoor community, government, community leaders, and practitioners inGowa regency. Descriptive and reflective sections were used to analyzethe data and examining the poverty alleviation model through theempowerment of socio-economic institutions in South Sulawesi in Gowaregency. With the method of synergizing between Social Institution andEconomic Institution, the researcher found that society can develop itselfcreatively and productively, so gradually Poverty will decrease asexpected. Based on survey results, observations and interviews on thesubject in this study, it can be concluded several things: That povertyexperienced by the people of Gowa Regency is cultural and structuralpoverty so that people naturally experience poverty without realizing it asa problem in their lives living as they are with the non-poor community.Poverty is seen as something destiny and need not be too much of aproblem, but they live their lives as they are.

The increasing social and environmental challenges, particularly poverty, have brought social entrepreneurship, a highly researched domain, to the attention of academicians. It has emerged as a critical issue in the context of economic development and societal well-being. The current study presents a comprehensive bibliometric analysis in the field of social entrepreneurship and poverty alleviation to explain the current state, geographical performance, and future research agenda. Utilizing VOS viewer (version 1.6.20) and R Studio software (version 4.3.2), 461 final articles were examined and extracted from the Web of Science database, covering the period from 1998 to 2022. The findings reveal a significant increase in research activity in this field since 2009, indicating a growing demand for it as a solution to social challenges. Notably, the years 2021–2022 witnessed a remarkable 55% surge in research output. The Sustainability Journal ranks first as the most productive source, followed by the Journal of Cleaner Production. The most prolific authors are Nina Kolleck from Germany, David Littlewood, and Diane Holt from the UK. Additionally, this study assesses the geographic distribution of research contributions, highlighting regions with relatively lower research performance, such as South Asian and African countries. Leading in this domain are the UK, Spain, the USA, and European institutions. Co-citation patterns reveal four thematic clusters: (1) dynamics of social entrepreneurship; (2) sustainable entrepreneurial ecosystem; (3) social entrepreneurship for social innovation; and (4) integrated sustainable entrepreneurship, shedding light on critical aspects and the intellectual structure of this domain. Finally, keyword co-occurrence analysis identifies emerging research areas, e.g., entrepreneurial development, the role of higher education, enterprise collaboration, inclusive growth, and socio-economic empowerment. This research provides valuable insights for policymakers, researchers, and practitioners committed to achieving sustainable social change.
