In the post-Cold War world, the United States and China together forms one of the most significant relationships in the Asian Pacific region. However, this relationship cannot be considered in isolation from the dynamic economic integration of China with Hong Kong and Taiwan into what is now called 'Greater China'. This volume draws on a wide range of international expertise to examine the nature of the US economic interaction with Greater China. Set against the historical and political background of Sino-American relations, the contributors discuss in detail trade and investment flows between Greater China and the United States as well as China's entry into the World Trade Organization. The impact on regional trading partners and global trading organizations is also evaluated. The differing perspectives and analyses presented here make this volume a stimulating re-assessment of the current state of Sino-American economic relations as the region approaches the new century

Contrary to the presumption of the resource curse hypothesis, the oil exporter Venezuela has long been one of the most stable and conflict-free countries in Latin America. The article analyzes this deviant case by employing a context-sensitive approach which shows that the link between oil and internal conflicts or stability cannot be understood without considering crucial resource-specific and non-resource-specific contextual conditions. The findings of this in-depth case study suggest that the interplay of the relatively high oil abundance per capita, the geographical location of the oil reserves, multidimensional redistribution policies, specific political-institutional settings, and behavioral patterns of political elites best explains the generally low level of violent conflicts in Venezuela. These findings are further confirmed by a diachronic comparative analysis undertaken in the second part of this article. It is demonstrated that temporary increases in low-level violence can be explained by historical shifts relating to several of the outlined conditions. Adapted from the source document.

Contributes to the voting behavior literature by specifying the pathways by which ethnicity influences prospective vote choice. Data from a pre-election telephone survey of 506 Latinos & 206 Anglos in TX focused on the 1996 US Senate race, in which a Mexican American Democrat challenged an Anglo incumbent, are used to test hypotheses regarding the relationship between ethnicity & vote preference. Findings show that ethnicity has a direct effect on partisan identification & issue positions & an indirect effect on candidate evaluation & voting preference. Ethnicity directly & indirectly shapes important voting considerations & hence plays a major role in shaping voting preference. 4 Tables, 22 References. Adapted from the source document.

In a dialogue discussing issues of the relation between empirical and normative theory, four contributors comment upon the edited volume by Richard Price, Moral Limit and Possibility in World Politics, and Richard Price responds. The contributions principally revolve around the following themes: (1) whether a division of labor between normative and empirical theory can or should be overcome, which in turn presupposes notions of (2) just what constitutes normative and empirical international relations as such; and (3) the ethics of constructivism itself, including what if anything is distinctive about how constructivism might respond to the question of 'how we should act'.
; This article reflects on urban infrastructure services in Latin America. Polybius's description of the Roman Republic's mixed constitution is often compared to the "checks and balances" maxim in American politics. The thrust of this study is to follow the idea of establishment of a balanced political system and to ascertain whether the ideas that originated in the ancient Mediterranean world had a direct impact on the writing of the United States Constitution. It is clear that mixed constitutions, diffusion of powers, checks and balances and separation of powers are all ideas and instruments intended to establish a form of government in which interests groups and factions were prevented from amassing excessive powers and establishing an anti-democratic, despotic tyrannical reality. The link between the idea of the mixed constitution of Polybius and the checks and balances theory associated with the American political system becomes apparent: an idea and a system developed in a certain set of circumstances and described and defined in a certain manner according to the social, political and economic realities of antiquity transforms according to prevailing needs and conditions until variations find their way into modern American political culture.
