A framework for social educators & community developers to combine constructivist & prescriptive approaches in eliciting community participation in socioeconomic programs is presented that identifies the role of the agent & the community member in the participation process & also defines their need for mutual adjustment in these roles, through program changes or altered learning styles by both parties. Several barriers to change exist within the structure of the community. It is proposed that program flexibility is a key in eliciting successful participation, as the structural makeup of communities cannot easily be changed. Likely areas in which change can & cannot occur in situations of contact are classified, & an approach that sensitizes practitioners to the historical, cultural, & affective factors that must be built into program design is outlined. A CAJM article on the role of humanities in medical science. ; The word science is derived from the Latin scientia, which means knowledge. There are many compartments of science such as moral, political and natural, but the word "science" in its modern sense means an organised body of knowledge. Natural science is that which comes from awareness of the material environment in which we live. It is gained firstly by observation and also from the results of experiments which may be defined as situations planned to test the truth of an hypothesis. The words "truth" and "logic" prepare us for the idea of the "scientific method," which is a system of accurate reasoning whereby knowledge becomes objectively exact.
