APART FROM THE FORMAL, TECHNICAL CONDITIONS APPLICANT STATES MUST MEET, EASTWARD ENLARGEMENT OF THE EU DEPENDS ON THE WILLPOWER OF THOSE ATTEMPTING TO ACHIEVE IT. COMMON POST-COMMUNIST LEGACIES RELATING TO THE BUREAUCRATIC COMPETENCE OF CENTRAL AND EAST EUROPEAN STATES COMPLICATE ACCESSION; THEIR ABILITY NOT ONLY TO HARMONIZE THEIR LAWS TO THOSE OF THE EU, BUT ALSO TO BOTH IMPLEMENT AND ENFORCE LEGISLATION, IS CRUCIAL.

Drawing upon Achebe"s classic work, Things Fall Apart, where Okonkwo, the principal character, refuses to accept intrusions or changes influenced by Westernisation, this paper challenges one of the central assumptions in this story, that Africa falls apart as soon as it comes in contact with Europe. Notwithstanding the overwhelmingly negative effects of the trans-Atlantic slavery systems and European colonialism on Africa (and its Diaspora), this study argues, that to a large extent, Africa"s economic transformation and development could be greatly enhanced by adopting some new ideas and systems from within as well as outside the continent. This paper questions aspects of political conservatism exhibited in Okonkwo who is suspicious of fundamental changes to his society. The discussion is based on the jollof-rice principle of political hybridisation of development which proposes the amalgamation of Westernised and non-Western ideas and systems, in order to achieve economic development, rather than totally rejecting Westernisation in its entirety. The jollof-rice principle of political hybridisation is based on the idea of blending systems and ideas in much the same way that rice and tomato are combined in West Africa, to create jollof-rice. This study uses the academic discipline of international political economy in its analysis of themes of political conservatism and development in Africa, as portrayed in the Achebe"s work. In contrast to Okonkwo"s political conservatism, this study uses examples of Western-style democracy and state intervention in Africa to demonstrate the significance of embracing some aspects of Westernisation through political hybridisation.

The relevance of the study consists in the fact that the changes in the 1860-70s in the Empire determine the beginning of positive developments within the judicial system. Consequently, the objective of the article was to study the historical stages of the transformations in the judicial system and procedure in the Russian Empire in 1864. The main research method was deductive that allowed to study the nature and the key historical stages of the transformations in the judicial system and legal procedure in the Russian Empire in 1864. The solution to the problem posed was based on studying the legal foundations of the significance (place and function) of the judicial reform of 1864 within the general historical development of Russia. It is concluded that the key judicial principles include democratic foundations such as publicity in the oral process, frankness, and the right to a lawyer. Furthermore, it highlights that the authors of the Judicial Regulations of 1864 studied not only English and French law, but also examined the codes of procedure of Geneva and the Kingdom of Sardinia. Thus, the Russian jury trial became a new step in the development of European legal culture.

The article examines Hannah Arendt's analysis of 'pan-nationalist Europeanism' and anti-Americanism which may serve inherently problematic identity-generating functions for the European project. For Arendt, this specific form of Europeanism is often intimately linked to mobilizations of widely spread fears of global sociocultural and economic modernization, which is frequently perceived as 'Americanization'. In addition, however, those fears may reflect self-referential politics of 'Americanism' abroad and also originate in 'objective' structural international imbalances. According to Arendt, then, Americanism on one side and Europeanism on the other side of the Atlantic should be challenged as two ideologies facing, fighting and, above all, resembling each other as all seemingly opposed ideologies. In light of the current transatlantic cleavages, it is argued with Arendt that it is in the EU's best interest to avoid binary, culturalized legitimizations of Europeanism and (anti-)Americanism. Instead, it is the eminent political task to positively resignify the EU as a new, truly post-national project and polity in its own right. Adapting and expanding Arendt's framework, conceptual and normative implications for a self-reflexive, unique and future-oriented EU political identity and response to globalization are indicated and discussed.
This article accounts for an environmental standpoint to be part of the post-human approach by accessing the post-human as a post-humanism, a post-anthropocentrism and a post-dualism. The main goal of this paper is to call for a post-anthropocentric turn by emphasizing the fact that the Anthropocene and the actual ecological collapse are only the symptoms; it is time to address the causes, which have been detected in the anthropocentric worldview based on an autonomous conception of the human as a self-defying agent. An urgent answer to this scenario lays in philosophy, and specifically, in a theoretical and pragmatical post-anthropocentric shift in the current perception of the human. This article reflects on the ideal, but also uneasy, practices of letting go of anthropocentric privileges. Such changes can only result by fully acknowledging the human species in relation to the environment. The Anthropocene shall thus be addressed, together with sustainable forms of producing (less), recycling and co-existing with other species, with a socio-political and cultural shift: a passage from humanism to post-humanism, here underlined in its specific meaning of post-anthropocentrism. The methodology of this article develops as an assemblage of theoretical thinking, creative writing and artistic image analysis.

"A valuable study, one that combines riveting narration, shrewd analysis, and a sharp understanding of the existing literature with fresh research, both archival and oral."--American Historical Review "A portrait of astute Indian politicking, conflict, and personal struggles, greatly adding to our understanding of American history in this crucial era."--Western Historical Quarterly "A common perception of the American Indian activist movement is that it began with the occupation of Alcatraz in 1969. This study by historian Cobb makes the case that the period from the start of the Cold War to 1968 was critical for generating ideas and training a new generation of leaders who brought issues of Indian sovereignty and rights to public attention. . . . Cobb adds to the literature on this period by presenting vignettes of some two dozen activists whom he personally interviewed."--Choice "This very readable text is suitable for American Indian studies and related courses at all levels."--Montana The Magazine of Western History "An outstanding and important achievement."--Journal of American Ethnic History "This book brings to light the efforts of a broad variety of Native leaders who shaped the future of Indian intellectualism, Indian policy, and tribal development in the latter twentieth century. . . . Essential reading for anyone attempting to understand the forces of change and the precursors to AIM in the years between the end of the Second World War and 1970."--Wicazo SA Review "This is an exceptional book that requires a close read. It is well researched and brings to the reader an understanding of Indian political activism that has long been neglected or relegated to the dustbins of history. Organizations and people that fought in obscurity for Indian rights are presented in great detail, including their strong and weak points. . . . I highly
