Bold political elites and unique forms of social order brought the West to world dominance, but both are weakening dramatically in the contemporary period. The Endangered West makes the case for the continuation of Western power on as wide a global basis as is prudent. Is the survival of Western influence possible, or must we resign ourselves to its eventually being subordinated to more ruthless powers? Higley lays out the main policy lines that successful leadership will have to follow to preserve and strengthen Western societies. These include avoiding futile involvements in the internal problems of non-Western countries and preserving sufficient social order to permit public and private organizations to function. The West will also have to find a way to regularize treatment of the growing number of those who lack employment; invent new forms of useful work for Westerners to perform; inhibit large in-migrations, and discourage population growth. Above all, the West must address the threat of environmental disaster. There is no certain result in the struggle, but such measures will help to prevent a slide into despotism or a lapse into barbarism. Half the battle is to hold on to what the West has and, if possible, extend it. Progress will be made if elites and opinion leaders address societies' problems more competently. If the West's prestige is restored, world tensions may gradually subside, making meeting global problems more possible. --

In the first of these articles, those aspects of group life which can be represented as an equilibrium in a phase space were considered. In the discussion of social equilibrium it was emphasized that for understanding social events, and for planning social action, a reference from the phase space to the total social field is usually necessary. As an example of such an analysis of a social field, certain problems of social channels will be discussed briefly in this second article. We shall then consider some general problems of social planning, with particular reference to the role of "action research " in bringing about social change.

This article illustrates how social structures and behaviours of scientists in the societal sub-system of open science resemble patterns analysed in The Gift, an essay written by Marcel Mauss nearly 100 years ago. The presented analysis goes beyond existing interpretations of gift-giving in science. The latter has mainly focussed on the exchange of knowledge and citations. I argue that The Gift explains also identity, competition, co-opetition, rituals and punishment. Mauss's Gift is seen as a complementary model to existing economic and sociological approaches regularly used to analyse structures and behaviours in open science. By accentuating such an anthropological approach, I conclude that the Gift provides explanations for the stability and the expansion of the open science community.

Cet article propose une histoire des recherches scientifiques ayant contribué, depuis le xix e siècle, à faire des unions entre cousins un problème public. En plein processus de sécularisation du mariage, l'essor des théories de l'hérédité fait naître une série de controverses dans les milieux de la médecine, de l'hygiène et des sciences naturelles, puis de l'eugénisme et des sciences humaines, autour de la question de l'endogamie. L'étude des enquêtes scientifiques produites dans ce cadre, et en particulier des modes d'administration de la preuve, permet d'observer d'une part la transformation de la définition et des enjeux de la consanguinité et, d'autre part, la persistance d'un imaginaire du sang et d'une lecture d'inspiration religieuse du rapprochement des apparentés, décelable dans les sciences biologiques comme dans les sciences sociales jusqu'à une époque tardive.

Modern science and technology originated in Western Europe within a specific culture, but they have now been adopted and developed by several Eastern countries as well. We analyze the features of Western culture that may explain the rise of modern science with its associated economic development. A comparative analysis of Eastern cultures will then help us evaluate how far could contemporary science be successfully integrated within very different cultures. Without denying the role of social and political institutions, we would like to investigate the influence of Western and Eastern cultural thought patterns on the respective development of Europe and East Asia. In this way, we try to estimate the importance of the cultural framework for the development of science and technology.

The following article summarizes the meta-analysis of policies towards gender equality in science and research across Europe spanning the years 1980 to 2008. Observed overarching trends in the research literature are summarized, including the impact of higher education restructuring on gender equality in science and research and measures for advancing women's science careers. Résumé Polanyi analyse le déploiement historique d'une science économique "formelle" à partir du triptyque "marché-rareté-rationalité instrumentale". Il fait apparaître ce triptyque, et le savoir qui s'y consacre, comme étant un sous-ensemble d'une question plus large que devrait analyser une science économique "substantielle" s'intéressant au triptyque "besoin-nature-institution". Si l'on suit Polanyi dans sa critique fondamentale de l'économisme inhérent au premier triptyque, on a plus de réticences à accepter sa solution de substitution, mélange hétérogène de naturalisme et d'institutionnalisme, d'essentialisme et d'historicisme. La thèse défendue dans l'article est qu'il faut être plus polanyien que Polanyi et rechercher une économie de la raison pratique, fondement d'une science économique réintroduite à l'intérieur des sciences sociales.

Rapid advances in nanoscience and nanotechnology are profoundly influencing the ways in which we conceptualize the world of the future, and human ability to manipulate matter at the atomic and molecular levels offers previously unimagined possibilities for scientific discovery and technological applications. The convergence of nanotechnology with biotechnology, information technology, cognitive science, and engineering may hold promise for the improvement of human performance at a number of levels. Based on a National Science Foundation-funded Research Experiences for Undergraduates Program in nanoscience and nanotechnology at the University of Central Florida (summer 2002), a variety of social and ethical issues associated with these advances is discussed. Implications for the future of science-technology-society studies and K-16 science education also are presented.
