A Subaltern Reading of International Organisations and Issues of Order, Disorder and Marginality
In: South Asian survey: a journal of the Indian Council for South Asian Cooperation, Volume 21, Issue 1-2, p. 164-179
ISSN: 0973-0788
The article draws on Bourdieu's notion of orthodoxy and doxa, whereby a particular view of the world becomes established as a normal, natural and unquestioned truth, as the entry point for the discussion on international organisations and issues of order, disorder and marginality. Every established order, according to Bourdieu, tends to produce very different degrees and with very different means, the naturalisation of its own arbitrariness, whereby it successfully manages to make the world conform to the myth of it being a self-evident and natural order. Such a project as the article argues, given the very constitution of international society is highly problematic, especially from the standpoint of those traditionally located at the very margins of decision making—the subalterns. In deconstructing the meaning and substance of 'order' through select case studies, the article seeks to explicitly focus on international organisations as sites of power and control, the processes of institutionalisation and socialisation and the possibilities of change that posit new ways of thinking about issues of order and disorder in international relations.
Humanity Bounded and Unbounded: The Regulation of External Self-determination under International Law

Abstract
One of the most complex and uncertain areas of international legal doctrine concerns how to deal with the aspiration of a people to achieve self-determination through the establishment of a new state and the related claim to a specific territory over which statehood is to be exercised. Recently, when the General Assembly of the United Nations referred to the International Court of Justice the question of the legality of the declaration of independence by Kosovar Albanians, the Court was given an opportunity to clarify and develop the law on external self-determination. Instead, the Court answered extremely narrowly, confining its analysis to the legality of the act of declaration without determining any consideration of international legal norms applicable to the act of secession that was being proposed. This article intends to fill the gap left by the ICJ's decision: first by critiquing the inadequacy and tensions visible in the existing doctrine and second by examining how recent developments in international law may allow for a more normatively coherent approach to the problem.
Prioritizing the Factors Involved in the Success of Iranian Sportswomen in International Championships Using AHP
Any attempt for winning more medals in international sporting contests, especially the Olympic Games, demands sufficient knowledge on factors involved in such success. Thanks to social, cultural, economic and political differences among world nations, however, it is somehow impossible to develop an all-inclusive model including all factors which may affect one's success in the international sporting events. Attending to women's sports, in this regard, is an important issue. This study has aimed at identifying and prioritizing factors most often involved in the success of Iranian sportswomen in international sporting contests. Subjects of the study included sporting champions, coaches, heads of sport federations and finally professors of physical education majoring in sports management. Data-gathering tools of the study were a questionnaire made by the researcher (0.79 of reliability), and the questionnaire of pair comparison. Analyzing the involved factors based on the results, we finally came up with eight major factors affecting the success of Iranian sportswomen in international championships. They were then divided into two general classes. Results from AHP showed that financial factors, competition and coaching had the greatest effects in the success of Iranian sportswomen.

A Global Civilian Power? The Future Role of the European Union in International Politics
In: Icelandic Review of Politics and Administration: IRPA = Stjórnmál og stjórnsýsla, Volume 7, Issue 1, p. 97-116
ISSN: 1670-679X
Questions about the future of the European Union as an international actor continue to puzzle students of international relations and particularly students of EU foreign policy. What kind of predictions can we make about the future role of the EU in international politics? While the question is often framed in terms of military versus normative and/or global civilian power Europe, there are indications that ambitions in both directions may very well coincide. However, despite the EU's development towards deepened defense integration since the 1990s, such developments are by far outweighed by developments pointing in the direction of the EU consolidating its role as a global civilian power. In this article, we analyze the union's civilian policies and contrast the findings of our analysis with developments in the field of Common Security and Defence Policy (CSDP). Based on our analysis of EU enlargement policy, external aid, global environmental policy and the union's commitment to multilateralism, our conclusion is that the EU's international role in the next decades will continue to be best described in terms of a global civilian power.

Exploring the institutional perspective on international business expansion: Towards a more detailed conceptual framework
While the general principles of the Institutional Perspective have been widely accepted, there has been only limited consideration to the present time of their in-depth application to the strategies of individual firms engaged in international business. The paper argues that companies engaged in such activities will find that there is a significant gap in precisely what aspects of the formal and informal institutional perspectives need to be identified and assessed for international expansion. The purpose of this paper is to develop a theoretical paradigm that allows organizations not only to compare different countries with regard to their potential for international business expansion from the perspective of Institutional Theory but also drawing on theories of International Business Strategy where relevant. The theoretical framework assumes that such organizations are engaged in analyzing the institutional arrangements and resources of their home and possible host countries. The paper then develops a conceptual framework that identifies five major components, namely people, power, performance, pathways to international expansion, and productivity, the latter being defined in terms of knowledge and innovation. It explores each of these areas in more depth with the aim of adding a more detailed structure to elements of Institutional Theory relevant to international business expansion.
