This collection of essays is a state-of-the-art analysis of key issues confronting the European Union. Identifying European economic integration as one of the defining features of modern international economics, the authors examine many aspects and consequences of this integration which remain as yet obscure and unexplored. In this book, after addressing general issues concerned with European integration, the authors include empirical and theoretical analyses of the monetary union, social policy reform and social union, public finance in the EU, the EU's agriculture and technology policies, and direct foreign investment into the EU. In particular, the volume includes detailed discussion of Greek membership of the EU, supplying a context in which many of the general issues of industrial adjustment, investment and politics can be examined. Using a wide range of topics, methodologies and perspectives, Economic Integration and Public Policy in the European Union offers a stimulating and wide-ranging presentation which will be of interest to economic theorists, empirical social scientists, policymakers and the informed general reader

On April 9, EDC Malta, EDIC University and the Institute for European Studies invited young people to join the CITIZENV initiative taking place in all Member States to discuss future environmental policies of the EU. The group met the Maltese Deputy Director General, DG Environment of the European Commission, Mrs Joanna Drake, at the European Documentation Centre. The discussion, taking place in all Member States between January and May 2019 about the future priorities of EU environment policy, was held both in view of the expiry (and the evaluation) of the 7th Environment Action Programme and the elaboration of the new Commission's priorities. In that respect, CITIZENV gathers the feelings, concerns and ideas of young people: the year of the European elections is indeed a good opportunity to discuss the European environment policy, and to reflect on its future. The discussion focused on 5 questions in a very friendly and participatory way, to gather ideas on what matters in the European Commission's environmental policies for youth. The following questions were discussed in small groups: – How will our environment look like in 2030? – How can I convince others to be environmentally conscious? – What is the most urgent action that needs to be tackled? – What am I ready to do on my part? ; N/A

This volume deals with the values of the people in contemporary Europe. Using the survey data from the European Values Study, a number of basic values and the dynamics of value change are explored from an economic, political, social, and religious-moral point of view. Part 1 focuses on Europe's values from an empirical-analytical, and a historical point of view, and also presents the views of three eminent Europeans. Part 2 deals with in-depths analyses of European values, based on the empirical data set covering basic orientations in most of the domains of human life. Part 3 contains reflections on the empirical findings, the value of value research, the hidden assumptions behind it, and the deeper layers of Europe's position and developments
Public procurement is an important policy instrument which supports innovation activity of enterprises. International links between economies and an increasing access to public procurement markets in European countries justify studying spatial effects of public procurement contracts on innovation activity of companies. The aim of this paper is to assess these relationships using the spatial model. The results show that public procurement contract is a very important innovation policy instrument, since it has the positive impact on innovations in a domestic economy and the negative effect in neighbouring countries. Moreover, the need to meet requirements of public procurement contracts motivates enterprises, both in the own country and in the neighbouring countries, to undertake innovation activities. ; peer-reviewed

The paper studies the fiscal policies implemented in the European Union
countries since the beginning of the current crisis. With this aim in mind we
have analyzed separately the expansionary fiscal policies implemented at the
first stage of the crisis and the fiscal consolidation policies that became
widespread at the beginning of the current decade. Studying the content of
the national fiscal policies (discretionary measures versus built-in
stabilizers, revenue-based versus expenditure-based fiscal policies, the
relationship existing between the size of the fiscal impulses-adjustments and
the composition of these measures) shows the significant differences between
the fiscal policies implemented in the European Union countries.
