Antonio Gramsci, it is argued here, articulated a specific epistemological position that most commentators on his work have missed or ignored. This position amounts to a direct rejection of the older epistemologies favored by most Marxists, ie, empiricism, positivism, & rationalism. Gramsci worked out his position in the context of a sustained critique of economic determinism & dogmatism within Marxism. Gramsci's work complemented & prepared the way for the later work of Louis Althusser & other contemporary Marxists seeking to reformulate Marxism on a nonessentialist philosophical basis. 17 References.
