Popular culture can play a significant role in shaping the acceptance of evolving technologies, with nanotechnology likely to be a case in point. The most popular fiction work to date in this arena has been Michael Crichton's techno-thriller Prey , which fuses together nanotechnology science with science fiction. Within the context of Prey, this article examines the role that scientists and popular culture play in educating society, and one another, about emerging technologies. In di ferentiating fact from fiction, the article reflects on how such distinctions may be important in proactive public dialogue projects. The article concludes that popular culture will be a key factor in informing citizen beliefs about the coming nano-age. Accordingly, governments, in conjunction with the scientific community, will need to be proactive in distinguishing science fact from science fiction for the benefit of their citizens.
--- Iraqi Turkmens that after nearly a thousand years of Turkish rule in Iraq find themselves completely out government with establishment of modern Iraq. From 1926 to the present, Iraq governments perceive Turkmens as a threat and be worried about that Turkmen regions are reconnected to Turkey due to rich oil resources in these regions. Therefore, these governments follow politics against human rights that assimilate, exterminate and destroy the Turkmens. Turkmens are isolated themselves for a long time against inhuman politics applied by Iraq go-vernments. With 1991 Gulf War, they have entered the path of political organization to take their seized rights and to live in a humanly and fairly. Turkmen politics that passing through different stages from 1926 to present and overcome difficulties progress quite. Turkmen poli-tics still continue to struggle with many obstacles and problems. Although we cannot say that they have achieved significant achievements yet, they have gone a long way of political organ-ization in the 28 years since 1991.

Science fiction has recently been identified as providing the narrative paradigm for postmodernity. This volume of essays combines theoretical discussions of the nature of science fiction, with specific studies of utopian and dystopian narratives. Alongside of this, the essays here address feminist and African American issues, the envisioning of radical alternative realities and futures, cyborgs, cyberpunk and cyber-space, age and aging, hybridity and monstrosity, and contemporary society and the postmodern condition

Comparative politics has witnessed periodic debates between proponents of contextually sensitive area studies research and others who view such work as unscientific, noncumulative, or of limited relevance for advancing broader social science knowledge. InSoutheast Asia in Political Science: Theory, Region, and Qualitative Analysis, edited by Erik Martinez Kuhonta, Dan Slater, and Tuong Vu, a group of bright, young Southeast Asianists argue that contextually sensitive research in Southeast Asia using qualitative research methods has made fundamental and lasting contributions to comparative politics. They challenge other Southeast Asianists to assert proudly the contributions that their work has made and urge the rest of the comparative politics discipline to take these contributions seriously. This symposium includes four short critical reviews ofSoutheast Asia in Political Scienceby political scientists representing diverse scholarly traditions. The reviews address both the methodological and the theoretical orientations of the book and are followed by a response from the editors.

Science and technology are major change agen cies now operating on a global scale. The narrowing interval between scientific discovery, technological implementation, and social use has increased the general rate of change. Our moni toring and accounting procedures for the differential rates of such changes in various sectors of society, and for their short- and long-term consequences, are presently inadequate. The available indicators in these areas tend to be quantitative rather than qualitative. To provide more positive measures of social progress, and earlier warning of the social and en vironmental effects of new scientific-technical developments, we need to redesign our present indicator procedures. Such extended and qualitative indicators will further require inte gration, and interpretation, within a comprehensive system of social accounting.

MOST RECENT ATTEMPTS AT REDEFINING POLITICAL PARTIES SITUATE THEMSELVES OUTSIDE THE MAINSTREAM OF POLITICAL THEORY & DO NOT DEAL SUFFICIENTLY WITH THE PROBLEMATICAL ASPECTS OF POWER & OF GOVERNMENT. TO DEVELOP A TRUE POLITICAL SCIENCE OF PARTIES ONE HAS TO BE ABLE TO RESPOND TO 3 QUESTIONS: WHO GOVERNS IN THE PARTIES? DO THE PARTIES REALLY GOVERN? HOW DO THE GOVERNMENTAL OR NONGOVERNMENTAL ACTIONS OF PARTIES AFFECT THE SOCIETY & THE SUPPORT THAT THEY OBTAIN THERE? FROM THESE 3 QUESTIONS EMERGE THE NOTIONS OF THE LEADERSHIP POWER (OR INTERNAL POWER), GOVERNMENTAL POWER, & SOCIETAL POWER (ELECTORAL OR NONELECTORAL) OF POLITICAL PARTIES. GOVERNMENT IS DEFINED ACCORDING TO A CYBERNETIC MODEL, & POWER IS LOGICALLY DEFINED. THE NOTIONS OF LEADERSHIP POWER, GOVERNMENTAL POWER, & SOCIETAL POWER ARE SUCCESSIVELY ANALYZED FOR THE PURPOSE OF MAKING THEM OPERATIONAL. A NUMBER OF PROPOSITIONS, HITHERTO SEEMINGLY UNRELATED, ARE DRAWN TOGETHER TO OUTLINE A POLITICAL THEORY OF PARTIES. 2 FIGURES, 1 TABLE. HA.
