AbstractThis article outlines the empirical findings of the first national longitudinal study of almost 1,000 recent immigrants who decided to move to non‐metropolitan Australia. The national survey (2008‐2010) identified that new international immigrants tend to move to rural areas because of the natural beauty, lifestyle and community spirit to be found there, as well as the idyllic image of peacefulness and a relaxing environment associated with these areas. Natural attractors, such as rurality and climate, were important features of the places which, according to the survey, were particularly liked. However, there is tension between the imagined Australian rural ideal and reality, with remoteness, isolation and parochialism being the key features in how the countryside may be misrepresented. The retention of new immigrants in rural places is very strongly related to constructed attractors – the availability and quality of infrastructure, as well as recreational, entertainment and cultural activities.

What role does trade play in international technology transfer? Do technologies introduced by multinational firms diffuse to local firms? What kinds of policies have proved successful in encouraging technology absorption from abroad and why? Using these questions as motivation, this article surveys the recent trade literature on international technology transfer, paying particular attention to the role of foreign direct investment. The literature argues that trade necessarily encourages growth only if knowledge spillovers are international in scope. Empirical evidence on the scope of knowledge spillovers (national versus international) is ambiguous. Several recent empirical plant-level studies have questioned earlier studies that argued that foreign direct investment has a positive impact on the productivity of local firms. Yet at the aggregate level, evidence supports the view that foreign direct investment has a positive effect on economic growth in the host country.

In an effort to protect and enhance the interests of their constituents in a complex era of globalization, interdependence, and "creative destruction," mostu.s.state governments have chosen to be engaged internationally, especially in economic activities, such as export promotion and the attraction of direct investment, tourists, and students from abroad. However, these activities have often been sporadic and are subject to being downsized or eliminated during tough fiscal periods, such as the Great Recession of 2007–2009. Moreover,u.s.federalism has been in a period of centralization with more power assumed by the national government at the expense of state governments. The executive branches of the national and state governments occasionally clash over international competencies, with the national government almost always prevailing. Nonetheless, most state governments continue to be actively engaged in "foreign affairs," as contrasted with "foreign policy," and future trends should result in the proliferation of these pursuits.

Over the last 50 years, Ethiopia has experienced several socio-economic, environmental, and political crises, leading to significant migration internally and across borders. The IMR Country Report provides a concise overview of Ethiopia's migration history and the present state of international migration trends, which is a crucial migration hub in the Horn of Africa region. The report examines the changing dynamics of migration to, from, and through Ethiopia, including crucial insights from the complex migration journeys of individuals over the years. Migration outflows and drivers have shifted in scale, and the demographic profile of migrants, their countries of origin and destination, has also evolved. Additionally, over the last decade, there has been an increase in the involuntary repatriation of Ethiopian domestic workers from Gulf countries.

Based on the author's post-doctoral project conducted at the Montesquieu Institute at Maastricht University from 2009-2012. Dazu wird zunächst ein Überblick über die familiäre Herkunft der Schülerinnen und Schüler, ihren Bildungshintergrund sowie den beruflichen Status der Eltern geliefert. Ergänzend wird für Deutschland und für einige Länder der Bundesrepublik Deutschland dargestellt, wie sich die in IGLU untersuchten Kinder bezüglich ihres sozialen und Migrationshintergrunds unterscheiden. Die in IGLU untersuchten Kompetenzen werden jeweils im Zusammenhang mit dem familiären Hintergrund, dem Geschlecht und dem Migrationsstatus dargestellt. Abschließend werden die Disparitäten bezüglich des sozialen Hintergrunds und des Migrationshintergrunds der betrachteten Länder der Bundesrepublik Deutschland in internationale Vergleiche eingeordnet." A frequent choice for market entry to China is the international joint venture (IJV) with a Chinese partner. This is regarded as an adequate market entry if complex technological knowledge is to be transferred to the new location. However, IJVs also represent an easy way for local partners to absorb technological knowledge without authorization. Michael Hoeck investigates the character and the degree of technology transfer into IJVs, using the example of German industrial firms in China. The two central questions that are investigated are "What factors influence the sophistication of the technological endowment that an IJV in China receives from its German parents?" and "In what way do strategic considerations regarding inter-firm cooperation and knowledge sharing influence the foreign investor's technology transfer behaviour?". The study results - derived from theoretical and empirical analysis - presents novel insights to both researchers and practitioners

The paper is intended as an explanation as to why the author lent support the Committee's majorit y 's final document.
