The philosophy of American education is that every educable person should have the opportunity to choose freely and pursue the course of studies he believes best suited to his individual goals and purposes. This philosophy is gen erally extended to foreign students who come from abroad to study in the United States. Such a philosophy does not take into account, however, the cultural and technological differ ences between the United States and the underdeveloped areas of the world, from which over half the foreign students in the United States come. When students from abroad, no matter how able, pursue courses which prepare them for careers which are useless and unavailable in their own countries, they return home only to become frustrated and discontented. The United States should, perhaps, exercise some control over the fields which students from other countries pursue. Such control would represent an abridgement of the American philosophy of education, but, judiciously exercised, the comparative use fulness of the training and skills acquired in the United States would be vastly increased. Practically, the United States Government should reach mutually satisfactory understand ings with other governments as to who should come and for what purposes and should gain the co-operation of American universities for better defined participation in the international educational exchange program.—Ed.

"Political Narratosophy offers a critically subversive rethinking of the political and philosophical significance of narrative, and why feminist epistemology and feminist social theory matters for the meaning of the 'self' and narrativity. Through a re-examination of the notions of democracy and emancipation, Senka Anastasova coins the term 'political narratosophy', a unique interpretation of the philosophy of narrative, identification, and disidentification, developed in conversation with philosophers Jacques Rancière, Nancy Fraser, and Paul Ricoeur. Utilizing the author's own identity as a feminist philosopher has lived in socialist Yugoslavia, post-Yugoslavia, and Macedonia (now North Macedonia), Anastasova explores the fluctuating and disappearing borders around which identity is situated in a country that no longer exists. She expertly reveals how the subject finds, makes and unmakes itself through narrativity, politics, and imagination. Political Narratosophy is an important intervention in political philosophy and a welcome contribution to the historiography on female authors who lived through twentieth century communism and its aftermath. The present study is an attempt to liberate the thought of the Daodejing from the constraints imposed on it by both traditional Confucian exegesis and modern Western sinological methodologies in the effort to engage the thought of the work more directly. Because the language and thought of the Daodejing are somehow oddly foreign to the Western traditions of analytic philosophy and sinology, this study attempts to make the Daodejing more familiar by recourse to the tradition of continental philosophy, in this case by taking recourse to Hannah Arendt and in particular to her seminal essay on authority. Engaging Arendt's understanding of authority, this study offers a new look at the thought of the Daodejing by discussing issues that lie at the heart of its political vision, including natural versus political authority, power and coercion, and the relation between authority, tradition, and religion. This study also attempts to situate the fate of the Daodejing's conception of authority in Chinese political history, and it concludes with a brief look at the contemporary comparative philosophical project that brings the Daodejing into conversation with continental philosophy.

The dispute between Sunni and Shia does not only revolve around the problems of theological leadership, ways of worship, but also points to the authenticity of the Quran. Among the Sunnis, the authenticity of the Quran has been conserved since the revelation times. As for the Shiites, some scholars of this school state that there has been a distortion (tahrif) of the Quran. They also allege that several verses and chapters in the Quran have been changed even they were deleted, especially those concerning the leadership. This study aimed to find out the differences in the Sunni-Shia views on the Quran's authenticity, genealogically, its process, and its legal status. Based on qualitative research methods, this study used a comparative approach to analyze the details of the differences between these theological views. The result indicates that according to the Sunnis, the Quran will always be preserved as words of God. Meanwhile, in the Shiites, there are two different views about the authenticity of the Quran. The first states that the Quran was distorted during the first three caliphate era. The second states that the Quran is forever in its originality. Among Indonesian Shiites, there is no discourse on the distortion of the Quran.

Under the auspices of UNESCO, social scientists of various disciplines and countries have held small meetings these past two years to discuss, plan and present research having to do with the general problem of peaceful co-existence. At the initial meeting, held in Geneva in 1956, it was decided to organize future sessions by academic discipline - meetings of economists, comparative jurists, of political scientists and sociologists. The sociologists' meeting was held in Moscow, January 6th to 12th, 1958. The International Sociological Association organized it; the Institute of Philosophy of the Soviet Academy of Science was host.

China's Belt and Road Initiative (BRI) has received both praise and criticism within global settings. American stance, however, has been interesting sounding diplomatically more intricate. BRI's opponents view it being hampered by impediments rather than facilitated with opportunities, while its advocates see opportunities instead of challenges because of its being in global limelight. While all parties have valid justifications for their express or tacit positions, they emphasize on the legitimacy of the status quo. To investigate these significant researchable inquiries, the study exclusively aims at examining the inherent ideologies and inconsistencies witnessed in the presentation and re-presentation of China's Belt and Road Initiative in US public diplomacy media outlets. Our findings reveal that China's image has been constructed differently at US diplomacy public media outlets hence establishing it as a major dimension worth inquiry. The study also shows that media attention and direct responses to the BRI in the United States view it through a lens of politically engineered problems. However, the diplomatic logic of the United States differs from the entire philosophy behind the BRI project as the BRI image has observed a drastic change from positive in re-presentation to being neutral rather somewhat negatively perceived.

In the debate surrounding Turkey's integration into the EU, the country is often presented as an imperfect democracy, with a democratization process hindered by the Turkish state itself. Drawing both on Ottoman history & political philosophy, this article argues that the object to be examined with respect to its degree of democracy is less the state per se than its relationship to Turkish political society. This relationship is structured more around an opposition between the rulers & the ruled -- an Ottoman legacy -- than around distinctions derived from the theory of representation, in contradistinction to modern democracies. In fact, the very nature of the Ottoman state -- defined by an original combination of dynastic legitimacy, autocracy & elite reproduction -- isolated the Sultan's Empire in its final years from the trends toward democratization that European political societies were experiencing. Analyzing the elements of continuity between the republican & imperial states & societies -- revealed by the recent Ottomanist historiography -- leads to emphasizing the extent to which the still perceptible Ottoman political figuration has paved the way for the construction of Kemalist state nationalism & has limited the emergence of a democratic culture of representation that conditions its integration into the EU. The Mogul court poet Fayzi (AD 1547–95) is credited with the composition of the Shariq al-ma`rifa, a Persian text offering an interpretation of Indian philosophy drawing on Sufi and Neoplatonic (Illuminationist) terms and categories. This article examines how the author subordinates Vedantic thought to an Islamicate framework.

Global Economics looks beyond the mere interaction of national economies as is implied by the term 'international economics.' It examines the integration of national economies into the emerging global economy. In keeping with the subtitle A Holistic Approach, the book considers the roles of technology, political arrangements, the rule of law, natural resources, climate change, social institutions and values, in addition to the role of economics (narrowly defined). In fact, recourse to abstract economic analysis is restrained, and discussion is replete with concrete examples and case studies. Specific topics include trade theory, policy and agreements, foreign exchange, exchange rate determination and hedging, international capital and labor flows, financial crises and development. The book details the changes that took place with the Industrial Revolution and the subsequent spread of market economics and democratic government. It develops the classic theory of comparative advantage, and then applies and extends the theory to explain the complex trade patterns of today. It uses game theory to analyze trade policy, and the tragedy of the commons to address the resource curse. The book covers topics such as the relationship of defense to trade policy not typically considered by international economics, in addition to taking a fresh approach to the traditional topics.

In political philosophy, economic theory and public discourse, there is a seemingly endless debate on what the essence of equality and freedom is and what relation between the two is essential to a good political order. Views range from the conviction that too much socio-economic equality jeopardises freedom to the position that a certain level of equality is necessary for the proper realisation of freedom. Building on these conflicting normative claims, we look at data from more than 50 established and emerging democracies for a period of more than 20 years to investigate whether there is indeed a trade-off between freedom and equality or whether they are mutually reinforcing. In the process, we distinguish between two types of equality – political and socio-economic.
