This dissertation analyses the American development and execution of the industrial demilitarization program in occupied Germany after World War II. Both Roosevelt and Truman administrations tackled the task of more or less permanently removing the basic German potential to produce armaments. A new understanding of industrial processes led policymakers to advocate the elimination of general or civilian manufacturing capacities for reasons of national security. This radical departure from the norms of previous peace settlements took the modern dual-use nature of industrial power into account. But the few contemporary analyses of demilitarization surprisingly disregard the importance of dual-use conceptions. Employing a strict division of civilian from military production that flies in the face of early 20th Century military theorists such as the advocates of strategic bombing ; scholars have typically downplayed the problems experienced by the Foreign Economic Administration and Allied Control Council in even pinpointing the sources of military industrial power. It is therefore surprising that the historiography generally takes the success of the demilitarization operation for granted even though other historians have emphasized the relative growth of western German heavy industry after 1945. This examination questions the utility of military industrial control schemes owing to both the complexity and intertwined basis of the entire industrial structure. The paper employs a wide range of diplomatic and military records to critically examine the twisted course of conceptual development and the actual work of Lucius D. Clay's military government. These records expose the significant constraints that hampered the project. Plans to remove an explosives manufacturing capacity for example failed because fertilizer output depended on many of the same facilities. Tampering with this sector threatened Washington with an humanitarian disaster owing to postwar conditions. Other constraints ; such as the questionable benefits of transferring military industrial strength to potential adversaries or the belief generated by the Strategic Bombing Survey that the bombers had already done the job or most importantly the post-1945 American argument for swift German civilian economic rehabilitation to drive European reconstruction ; manifested themselves. These constraints ameliorated the original policy direction represented by the Morgenthau Plan and J.C.S. 1067. Successive definitional alterations quickly led Washington to reject any serious attempts at destroying industrial capacities -- as witnessed in the examination of the fate of the Alkett-Berlin tank plant. Assessments of German military power after the Cold War breach in 1947 by the Joint Chiefs of Staff exposed real dual-use potential. Rather than building an epoch of peace ; the industrial demilitarization conundrum helped drive the United States and Soviet Union further apart as both jostled for an improved power position in Germany. Seen in this way ; the survival of German military industrial capacities contributed to the process split the world in two and ended with the emergence of the Bundeswehr by 1955.
Securitizing Islam examines the impact of 9/11 on the lives and perceptions of individuals, focusing on the ways in which identities in Britain have been affected in relation to Islam. 'Securitization' describes the processes by which a particular group or issue comes to be seen as a threat, and thus subject to the perceptions and actions which go with national security. Croft applies this idea to the way in which the attitudes of individuals to their security and to Islam and Muslims have been transformed, affecting the everyday lives of both Muslims and non-Muslims. He argues that Muslims have come to be seen as the 'Other', outside the contemporary conception of Britishness. Reworking securitisation theory and drawing in the sociology of ontological security studies, Securitizing Islam produces a theoretically innovative framework for understanding a contemporary phenomenon that affects the everyday lives of millions

This book develops an understanding of workplace justice and labour rights in Vietnam from factory workers' voices and their resistance against abuse and exploitation. Through interviews with workers and a close analysis of their letters and petitions to the unions and state authorities, Nguyen illuminates how workers' resistance is enabled and stifled by the legal and political systems that are supposed to protect their rights and benefits. Their calls for justice reflect socialist ideology and widely held norms within society, as well as ideals and values embedded in labour law. The book demonstrates how state law brings about social change through shaping workers' expectations and increasing consciousness of rights and justice. This book will be of interest to scholars of law, politics and society, and scholars, students and practitioners interested in labour rights in developing countries.
Professional village facilitators are facilitators who provide assistance to the community. Its presence is the demand of Law Number 6 of 2014 concerning Villages and the regulation of the village minister No. 3 of 2015 concerning Village Assistance. Four years of village funds and village assistance programs are running, but there have not been many changes. This condition is affected by the problems experienced by professional village assistants. This research was conducted in the City of Padangsidimpuan using a qualitative-descriptive method, found four aspects of the problematic professional village assistants. First Quantity Aspect: looking at the problems that arise due to the quantity of available energy factors, there are limited physical abilities of professional village assistants in providing mentoring services and lack of focus on community empowerment activities that can foster community awareness, independence and welfare. Second Quality Aspect: mastery of village facilitators on empowerment, academic material and empowerment theories through formal education and through special education and training. Field findings related to the quality aspect are that there are still professional village assistants with secondary school education, inappropriate scientific background with the field of empowerment and community assistance, lack of education and training, knowledge and mastery of empowerment and community assistance materials, need a process for knowledge internalization. The three aspects of division of labor assistance found that the success of the professional village assistance work program was influenced by the division of labor and the unbalance of workload with the honorarium received. Coordination Aspects means that village technical experts / assistants have not maximally developed coordination relations with local governments so policies to support mentoring programs are not yet available.
; This sociology research project aims to shed light on the aspirations of the Atikamekw youth of Opitciwan; one of the three poverty struck Atikamekw communities in the Northern Saint-Maurice region of Québec, Canada. Its further aim is to discover the attitude of Atikamekw youth towards school education and employment. First, a brief portrait will be painted of the socio-economical, historical and political situation of the community. Then, the National Household Survey of 2011 statistics will be examined to define the socio-economical conditions of the community by paying a particular attention to the relationship between schooling, employment and income. This quantitative analysis will allow us to discover the dynamic of these three variables within the community of Opitciwan. Secondly, semi-structured interviews will be carried out with Opitciwan's youth to identify their aspirations and motives. Our interview strategy will examine the reasoning of the participants' aspirations such as the impressions they have of their possible future and how they conceive the achievement of their ambitions. Four socio-types will be created from this qualitative analysis to categorise the results and help facilitate their interpretation. The resulting socio-types are: the ambitious, the conscious-realistic, the insecure and the passive type. Finally, the quantitative and qualitative analysis will be compared. This will allow us to identify and expose the similarities and differences between the realities of the community and the values of its youth. This study will, most importantly, generate a better understanding of the attitude of Atikamekw youth towards education and employment. It will also allow us to discover the dynamic between education, employment and income in the community and aid in identifying Opitciwans' socio-economic needs.
The aim of this study is to obtain a more in-depth explanation regarding the prob- lems in the life of classical Javanese performance from a sociological-artistic angle, in the face of changes that have occurred in the environment during the post Orde Baru era. Nevertheless, in order to gain a clear picture about the changes during each era, this study also covers the life of classical Javanese performance during the two previous era, namely the era preceding the Orde Baru and the Orde Baru era itself. This problem includes a general picture of the life of classical Javanese performance during these three periods, in particular at the time of this research. The next problem is concerned with the possibility of change occurring in the pat- tern of classical Javanese performances during the same period, and the nature of these new patterns, including which aspects, and with what substance. Likewise, to what extent are the aspects related to social change and social phenomena re- flected in classical Javanese performance a response from the artist, in connection with preserving his existence. In accordance with its goal, this study uses a sociological-artistic approach, from the result of Arnold Hauser's ideas in his book The Sociology of Art. This ap- proach principally looks at the relation between a community and its art. Classical Javanese performance is made up of a number of different elements, including its group, equipment, and audience. Arnold Hauser explains that social changes in a given area will result in a unique artistic style, in accordance with the form of the community at that particular time. An art form which in a certain period may be considered as a ritual art, may have the potential to be used as a tool of propa- ganda by the authority or even emerge as a form of popular art.Based on the results of the research, classical Javanese performance has a ten- dency to stand alone in each of the three eras, according to the changes in its environment. During the era prior to the Orde Baru, classical Javanese was en- joyed mainly by the agrarian community, who were influenced by arts from the court. During the Orde Baru era, performances were not only enjoyed by the agrarian community but also by the urban community as it spread to towns outside the court territory. At the present time, classical Javanese performances are coloured by government development policies and for this reason are often used as a gov- ernment tool for conveying messages about development. In addition, during the Orde Baru era, other art forms began to penetrate and influence the form of clas- sical Javanese performance. In the postOrde Baru era, its form has become moreopen, as a result of the euphoria created by an excess of reformation, and it has become difficult to identify. Furthermore, it is evident that audiences can no longer respond to the moral messages conveyed in a classical Javanese performance. Key words: classical Javanese performance, group, audience.
The importance of Gish Jen, a contemporary Chinese-American writer best known for novels that trace the impact of immigration and the acculturation process on Asian-American families, has been downplayed by scholars who favor well-known Asian American writers such as Maxine Hong Kingston and Amy Tan. While Jen's recently released World and Town (2010) is easily a story of immigration and assimilation, I argue that she breaks the traditional female Bildungsroman mold to create a Bildungsroman novel of postmodern humanism that couches the rebirth of a sixty-eight year old Chinese American female protagonist in her own immigration and assimilation experience as well as that of others. More importantly, Jen's latest novel, set against a post-911 backdrop, situates itself as a postmodern humanist text that reconfigures the ways in which individuals consider themselves in relation to a larger postmodern world of "social and economic implications that . . . alter . . . existing notions of identity" even as it demonstrates the importance of "interpersonal relationships between the self and others [in the] immigrant transformation," topics explored by Todd F. David and Kenneth Womack in Postmodern Humanism in Contemporary Literature and Culture: Reconciling the Void (2006) (102, 103). At this time, no critical studies exist on World and Town, therefore, I presume to consider this novel as one that breaks with the traditional rebirth fiction and encapsulates postmodern humanism. I will apply the work of David and Womack, cultural scholars, Zhou Xiaojing and Samina Najmi, scholars of Asian American writings, and Maryellen T. Mori and Phillipa Kafka's studies of gender and contemporary Asian American women writers, among others. Traditionally, the bildungsroman begins chronologically with the protagonist's birth and ends at maturation while it asserts the importance of community over isolation as relevant to the character's development. Jen's novel not only traces the self realization process of a mature Chinese American woman, but it also highlights the evolution of her multiple identities. In fact, the novel illustrates the necessity of participation within a community as an empowering agent that makes this act of discovery possible, especially in a postmodern world. Having lost her husband Joe and best friend Lee to cancer within a short period of time, Hattie struggles to make meaning of her world while she navigates the complexity of her Chinese and American identities—as a widow, mother, scientist, community member, and finally, lover. When the World and Town converge on her doorstep in the form of her Cambodian neighbors—struggling to assimilate—Hattie assumes a role that will change her position within her community and help her find fulfillment. As a result, Hattie's social and political, or communal, acts reconfigure the way she sees the world and the way the she is seen by her community. Finally, her ethic of care is a mobilizing force and altering and empowering agent of change. Consequently, Hattie's ethics and fairness, as part of her humanist philosophy and inherent Confucianism, are characteristic of the postmodern humanist position Jen takes up in her novel.
