International audience ; To allow for the production of timber while preserving conservation values, forestry regulations in the Congo Basin have made Forest Management Plans (FMP) mandatory in logging concessions. This paper uses original high-resolution maps of forest-cover changes and official records on the activities of logging concessions to analyze the impact of FMP on deforestation in this region. We apply quasi-experimental and difference-indifference approaches to evaluate the change in deforestation in concessions managed under an approved FMP. We find that between 2000 and 2010, deforestation was 74% lower in concessions with an FMP compared to others. Building on a theory of change, further analyses revealed that this decrease in deforestation takes time to occur and is highest around communities located in and nearby logging concessions, and in areas close to previous deforestation. These findings suggest that FMP help avoid deforestation by allowing logging companies to rotate cycles of timber extraction, thereby avoiding the overexploitation of areas that were previously logged, and by the better regulation of access to concessions by closing former logging roads to limit illegal activities such as shifting agriculture, hunting and the illegal harvest of timber or fuel-wood.

While research on organizational aspects designed to enhance volunteer attitudes has grown over time, we still lack knowledge on the mechanisms that explain these relationships and are specific to the volunteering context. In the present study, we draw on social identity theory to explore how two organizational characteristics relating to a nonprofit organization's (NPO) nature (volunteers' organizational vision acceptance) and nurture (volunteers' perception of organizational support) interact to promote volunteers' engagement and retention. Findings from a survey of 1,355 volunteers in a German environmental NPO show that the relationship between perceived organizational support and both volunteer outcomes is mediated by organizational identification and moderated by volunteers' acceptance of organizational vision. We contribute to research on the professionalization of volunteer management by highlighting the importance of volunteers' acceptance of their NPO's vision for their engagement and intention to leave.

Building-performance assessment is receiving increased attention within the building industry because of the European Union's (EU's) targets to improve energy efficiency and to increase the use of renewable energy technologies. In this context, there is great emphasis placed on the existing building stock as having a huge environmental impact. The continuous assessment of the energy performance of existing buildings comes into focus to ensure the intended performance and operation during the building life cycle. This paper introduces the Energy Performance Integration in Public Corporate Real Estate Management (EPI-CREM) initiative that aims to improve the energy performance and rational use of energy across the public building stock in Europe by embedding energy-saving measures into the existing public corporate real estate management (REM) processes. To this end, EPI-CREM focuses on the integration of energy-improving actions into the long-term maintenance plans of existing buildings. In this paper, the EPI-CREM method and supporting tools are discussed from a functional point of view, followed by an evaluation of the method based on the results of its implementation on pilot buildings in three participating EU countries.

A raíz de esta situación, se han notado algunos cambios en la relación industria y ambiente integrando a sus organizaciones sistemas de Gestión Ambiental como la norma ISO 14001:2004 para identificar los aspectos ambientales y sus impactos asociados y lograr un mejoramiento continuo en su desempeño ambiental. This work provides in-depth analysis of the origins of landscape ecology and its close alignment with the understanding of scale, the causes of landscape pattern, and the interactions of spatial pattern with a variety of ecological processes. The text covers the quantitative approaches that are applied widely in landscape studies, with emphasis on their appropriate use and interpretation. The field of landscape ecology has grown rapidly during this period, its concepts and methods have matured, and the published literature has increased exponentially. Landscape research has enhanced understanding of the causes and consequences of spatial heterogeneity and how these vary with scale, and they have influenced the management of natural and human-dominated landscapes. Landscape ecology is now considered mainstream, and the approaches are widely used in many branches of ecology and are applied not only in terrestrial settings but also in aquatic and marine systems. In response to these rapid developments, an updated edition of Landscape Ecology in Theory and Practice provides a synthetic overview of landscape ecology, including its development, the methods and techniques that are employed, the major questions addressed, and the insights that have been gained."

The author analyzes the main issues of sustainable development discussed at the XV Anniversary International Yasnopolyansky Forum "Sustainable Development — Rational Environmental Management — Health Technologies". First of all, attention is paid to new areas in the subject area of sustainable development, starting with environmental education and culture, as well as the multidimensionality of the subject of sustainable development research in general, as well as expanding the possibilities for implementing the research results into practice.

The Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development has long been recognised as one of the international community's premier economic organisations. Less well known is its extensive work and achievements in the field of environment. Written by a former Director of Environment, this book describes the origins and evolution of the Organisation's environmental work as well as its contributions to the resolution of major environmental issues which OECD Member nations have confronted over the second half of the Twentieth Century (e.g, acid rain, ozone depletion, chemical safety, hazardous waste management, and reconciliation of economic growth and environmental protection objectives). The author also sets out some of the key challenges that the OECD faces in maintaining a leadership role in international environmental affairs in the next millennium.
