This issue of the International Journal for Crime, Justice and Social Democracy stems from selected papers delivered at the 2013 and 2014 Critical Criminology conferences convened in, respectively, Adelaide (Flinders University) and Melbourne (Monash University). This was the final occasion when the Critical Criminology event would be held in successive years. In future, this conference will alternate with the Crime, Justice and Social Democracy Conference (hosted biennially by the Queensland University of Technology). As guest editors and the conferences' facilitators, we examined the abstracts across both events and listened to as many speakers as possible with the view to inviting submissions from a mix of Australian and international delegates, including a selection of postgraduate and early career researchers. The papers published in this issue provide solid evidence of not only the liveliness of critical criminological thought, but also its relevance to the twenty-first century problems besetting various governments and communities around the world. To find out more about this special edition, download the PDF file from this page.

This original edited collection explores the value of public engagement in a wider social science context. Its main themes range from the dialogic character of social science to the pragmatic responses to the managerial policies underpinning the restructuring of Higher Education. The book is organised in three parts: the first encourages the reader to reflect upon the different social and political inflections of public engagement and offers one university example of a social science café in Bristol. The following sections are based upon talks given in the café and are linked by a concern with public engagement and the contribution of social science to a reflexive understanding of the dilemmas and practices of daily life. This highly topical book will be of interest to academics, practitioners and students interested in critical social issues as they impact on their everyday lives

This textbook presents ethical guidelines for conducting research in the social sciences, focused on Indonesia. As a country with a fast-growing research environment, the real-life cases of ethical issues that arise in Indonesia can teach both aspiring and established researchers how to approach the complexity of research ethics and dilemmas. With technological advancement affecting how research is conducted, the necessary ethical guidelines for research are also evolving. The instantaneous nature of information movement has made confidentiality in research data more critical than before, and any negligence in protecting research participants has an unprecedented scope of damage. The methods book synthesises hundreds of worldwide ethical guidelines and past issues that social science researchers will find highly relevant. Arranged chronologically to represent each research stage-from research preparation to post-research-the book prepares researchers to mitigate ethical crises. Relevant to all social scientists, both emerging and established, conducting research in Indonesia, this co-published textbook between Springer and OBOR is also relevant to researchers beyond the archipelago. It is also an indispensable teaching resource for lecturers in research methods and ethics across social science disciplines.
Critical criminology must move beyond twentieth-century empiricist and idealist paradigms because the concepts and research programmes influenced by these paradigms are falling into obsolescence. Roger Matthews' recent work firmly advocates this position and helps to set the ball rolling. Here we argue that Matthews' attempt to use critical realist thought to move Left Realism towards an advanced position can help to put criminology on a sound new footing. However, before this becomes possible numerous philosophical and theoretical issues must be ironed out. Most importantly, critical criminology must avoid political pragmatism and adopt a more critical stance towards consumer culture's spectacle. A searching analysis of these issues suggests that, ultimately, criminology is weighed down with obsolete thinking to such an extent that to remain intellectually relevant it must move beyond both Left Realism and Critical Realism to construct a new ultra-realist position.
