Hannah Arendt was one of the first scholars to recognize that the Holocaust was not simply a unique event but a fracture in social theorizing. She makes the argument that the use of rational choice or similar theory in attempting to understand the Holocaust fails. It was beyond organized violence, but that does not mean it cannot be understood. Arendt warns of the temptation to explain away the Holocaust with known categories of thought or to abandon the search for understanding altogether, because known sociological & juridical categories do not apply. Arendt's concept of "radical evil" in relation to the Holocaust is discussed. The political & philosophical end of the Holocaust was to destroy the idea of humanity, but Arendt contends that there was a certain resistance to the totalitarian impulse & destructive will. M.
