THE POLISH CRISIS OF 1980-81, PRECIPITATED BY THE EMERGENCE OF THE ANTI-COMMUNIST SOLIDARITY MOVEMENT, WAS THE LAST TIME THE SOVIET CONTROL OF EASTERN EUROPE WAS SERIOUSLY CHALLENGED BEFORE THE SOVIET BLOC COLLAPSED 10 YEARS LATER. IN THIS ESSAY, THE AUTHOR EXAMINES THE POLISH CRISIS AND MOSCOW'S RESPONSE TO IT. HE ALSO DISCUSSES HOW THAT CRISIS WAS RELATED TO THE SUBSEQUENT COLLAPSE OF THE SOVIET BLOC.

Includes efforts to bring an end to the conflict by the US, the Organization for Security and Cooperation in Europe (OSCE), and others.

Es wird gefragt, welche Rolle der Journalismus für die Entstehung und Entwicklung einer europäischen Öffentlichkeit spielt oder spielen könnte. Zur Veranschaulichung wird ein "Euroreporter-Projekt" von 1996 zum Thema "Journalism in Europe" am Institut für Journalistik der Universität Dortmund herangezogen, bei dem Journalismus-Studenten aus europäischen Ländern gemeinsam Magazine für verschiedene Medien realisieren. An dieser Kooperation werden die idealistischen Konzepte einer europäischen Öffentlichkeit überprüft. Im Ergebnis werden vor allem auch die praktischen Hemmnisse eines grenzüberschreitenden Journalismus deutlich. Insgesamt zeigt sich, dass die angestrebte europäische Integration und Legitimation europäischer Institutionen gar nicht oder nur bedingt erreicht werden. So dokumentieren die Medienkooperationen in Grenzgebieten eher eine Deformierung der Öffentlichkeit. (BB)

AbstractMost transition economies in Central and Eastern Europe have rather surprisingly resisted protectionist pressures‐at least during early stages of reform‐and pursued fairly liberal trade policies. In this paper, trade policy during transition is explained from a political economy perspective. It is shown that pursuing liberal trade policies can be a rational strategy of reform politicians, maximizing the probability of electoral success.

In April 1919, the Young Women's Christian Association (YWCA) created the Old Country Service School (OCSS) to train foreign‐born women in American social welfare philosophy. The YWCA expected OCSS students to help rebuild war‐torn Europe. A study of the school's curriculum and students provides an interesting examination of gender, class, and identity as they related to international peace efforts during the interwar years.

The Mexican state has evolved much like countries in Europe & other parts of the world. However, to reflect Mexican reality today, with its new social demands & forms of expression, a new concept of state & society-state relations is developed.
