FOR CONFLICT SITUATIONS, REALITY TO US IS TYPICALLY A MIXTURE OF (1) STRESS, (2) INABILITY OF THE INDIVIDUAL OR LEADER TO WEIGH AND CONSIDER ALL RELEVANT INFORMATION, AND (3) INSUFFICIENT TIME AND RESOURCES TO GATHER AND DEVELOP THE OPTIMAL SET OF INFORMATION (STOCK OF KNOWLEDGE), EVEN GIVEN THE LIMITED ANALYTIC CAPABILITY OF THE INDIVIDUAL OR LEADER. THE STRESS CAN BE THE RESULT OF MANY CAUSES. THERE IS THE BACKGROUND OF CONSTANTLY CHANGING TECHNOLOGY; CHANGING TASTES, SOCIAL STRUCTURE AND CULTURE; CHANGES IN THE PHYSICAL ENVIRONMENT (BOTH SLOW AND ABRUPT); AND, OF COURSE, CHANGES IN ACTIONS TAKEN BY OTHER BEHAVING UNITS. STRESS, TO SOME DEGREE, IS ALMOST ALWAYS PRESENT. HENCE WE WISH TO CONSIDER THIS FACTOR AT THE VERY START.

The paucity of historical materials on Black Canadian women does not necessarily mean the sources are unavailable. To recuperate and reconstruct Black Canadian women's subjugated knowledge requires drawing from fragments of materials available within and outside the archives. Using oral history as the primary methodology, as well as archival and nursing sources, coupled with secondary research, this essay exploits these sources to piece together the story of a group of women about whom very little is known. This research not only contributes to the history of nursing in Canada but also challenges the national narrative that touts the benign treatment of Black people in Canada.
