This Translations contribution synthesises critical environmental social science research produced in Taiwan and published largely in Chinese. Taiwan is distinctive in east Asia in that it has had, over several decades, a relatively large and prolific community of scholars engaged with environmental justice and sustainability. This research tradition is linked to the emergence of grassroots environmentalism in response to environmental issues faced during Taiwan's rapid industrialisation, and to the democratisation of Taiwanese society from the 1980s onwards. Fuller understanding of research produced and published within in Taiwan hence yields insights for the role of social science within newly industrialising and democratising nations. Although the story of Taiwanese society's relation to environmentalism is to an extent understood in English-language literature, less prevalent are the diverse ways Taiwanese social scientists have engaged with environmental issues, the empirical case studies which have shaped their thinking, and the influences of Western environmental sociology and science and technology studies (STS) within Taiwan. By synthesising Chinese-language environmental social science literature from Taiwan, we characterise three strands of scholarship: activism and social movements; environmental controversies; and environmental governance, policy and institutions. We identify (a) the ability of communities and civil societies to affect change from within extant governance processes and (b) the local-level implications of national sustainable development rhetoric as two areas where Taiwanese scholarship may make particularly valuable contributions to work at the sustainability-environmental justice interface.

JASMIN exists to provide the UK environmental sciences the compute facility they need to deliver cost-effective world class science and impact from the exploitation of data. A £17M investment is needed for the next generation of JASMIN, to maintain the UK's scientific and competitive edge, facilitating the exploitation of world class environmental science to meet the global societal challenges of the future. Such an investment would build on international leadership and would support: • The merging of extremely large environmental data sets with the latest earth system models: building downstream growth in space-based environmental services; and underpinning international collaborations. • The transformation of data into information products and services; JASMIN provides the foundation for the UK environmental information ecosystem: investment will provide greater access to knowledge for a range of users. • Enabling researchers to better support government usage of environmental hazard data resulting in large-scale societal benefit e.g. development of earthquake monitoring systems. • The next generation of earth observation and environmental simulation, including for the next phase of the World Climate Research Programme (WCRP) global model intercomparison project (CMIP6) . The updated JASMIN will deliver cost-effective, world class environmental science, exploiting data for societal benefit. It will be a cutting-edge novel computational environment, ensuring highly-skilled people are retained in the UK from systems engineers to environmental data users, from data scientists and analysts to mathematicians.

This paper reviews the contributions of philosophy and the social and behavioral sciences to risk analysis. It concludes that philosophical, social, and behavioral research can contribute to the resolution of complex risk issues in at least four areas: (i) comparative risk analysis; (ii) the use of risk‐related scientific information in the decision‐making process; (iii) risk perception; and (iv) institutional and organizational features of the risk‐management system.

"This book explores the subjects of child sex abuse, flaws in the justice system, cultural support for vigilantism, prison violence, and the socio-legal philosophy of punishment. Child sex abuse leaves a scar that lasts a lifetime. Can any legal punishment balance the scales of justice? Can sex offenders ever repay their debt to society, or more importantly, to the victim? For some victims of this traumatic abuse, the debt remains unpaid, and it accrues interest. Vigilantes seek to avenge child victims by hunting down sex offenders in the community. Sometimes prisoners in correctional facilities conspire with rogue correctional officers to mete out their own form of "convict justice" on people who hurt children. While their motives and methods differ, these outraged citizens seek retribution through violence because they are disgusted with a justice system they believe shows extraordinary leniency toward child sex abusers. Whether this violence occurs in the community or in jail cells across the country, the message these vigilantes broadcast is the same: if the government won't seek retribution, they will. The story is told through a series of case studies based on interviews with real-life vigilantes, most of whom are serving life sentences for their crimes. For the first time, vigilantes have been given the chance to tell their own stories. Patrick Drum, Steven Sandison, Joseph Druce, Jeremy Moody, Jon Watson, James Fairbanks, and others have shared their personal insights to help us get inside the vigilante mind. For some readers, these accounts will humanize people considered to be simply murderers. For others, it will demystify the popular portrayals of vigilantes in our society"--
