COLLEGE STUDENTS TODAY OFTEN LACK BASIC ACADEMIC SKILLS, THE DEVELOPMENT OF THESE SKILLS IS CLOSELY & INEXTRICABLY INTERWOVEN WITH TEACHING AN ACADEMIC DISCIPLINE, & EVERY COLLEGE INSTRUCTOR MUST COMBINE TEACHING HIS/HER DISCPLINE WITH WORK ON THESE SKILLS, INCLUDING WORK WITH STUDENT PAPERS. VARIETY OF TEACHING TECHNIQUES ARE DESCRIBED TO SHOW HOW AUTHORS DOES THIS IN TWO POLITICAL SCIENCE COURSES.
"Political science is for everybody is the first intersectionality-mainstreamed textbook written for introductory political science courses. While political science and politics are for everybody, political institutions (and the discipline of political science) are neither neutral nor unbiased. When we write political science textbooks that obscure the differences in how groups experience and interact with political institutions, we do students a disservice. This book exposes students to these differences while also bringing marginalized voices to the fore in political science, allowing more students to see their lived experiences reflected in the pages of their political science textbook. Bringing together a diverse group of contributors, political science is for everybody teaches all the basics of political science while showing that representation matters--both in politics and in the political science classroom."--

R. K. White's indices of war propaganda or conflict-mindedness were tested further, using his method of value-analysis, on a wide range of S's. 4 of the 7 indices were validated in their original form, & 2 others were validated in a modified form. The 5 validated indices showed that war propaganda was characterized by high values placed upon nat'l strength, moral indignation, disguised aggression, & neglect of welfare values. An application of these indices in the value-analysis of pol'al ideologies, including communism, in its value-system, & signif'ly higher than the others in militarism, authoritarianism, & antiwelfarism, disproving the belief that communism & fascism are similar in any of these respects. "This is a truly illuminating and necessary book. Jeffrey Isaac lucidly explores the moral and political dilemmas of this turbulent fin-de-siecle, East and West. His passionate approach is inspired by a genuine moral vision that sees liberal democracy as an unfinished, continuously beleaguered project. Hannah Arendt and Albert Camus, I am sure, would have been in full agreement with his line of reasoning."-Vladimir Tismaneanu, University of Maryland, College Park "This will be the first of the many recent books on Hannah Arendt to move beyond exegesis to engage in the kind of thinking about politics that she so valued. The book brings an Arendtian voice back into contemporary politics."-Lisa Disch, author of Hannah Arendt and the Limits of Philosophy "Jeffrey Isaac's new book is essential reading for anyone who seeks to grapple seriously with the challenges confronting progressive democratic aspirations."-Ian Shapiro, Yale University "This book reveals Isaac to be a first-rate essayist, a bold critic who writes about key issues of politics and democracy with learning, style, and power."-Robert A. Dahl, Yale University "Persuaded by Jeffrey Isaac's argument about dark times, I nonetheless found these essays full of light-strong, lively, provocative, and even, despite themselves, encouraging. There can't be a renewal of democratic theory and practice without the kind of critique that Isaac provides."-Michael Walzer, Institute for Advanced Study
This book provides a lively account of the gilets jaunes, the yellow vest movement that has shaken France since 2018. Charles Devellennes assesses what lessons can be drawn from their activities and the impact for the contemporary relationship between state and citizen. Informed by a dialogue with past political theorists – from Hobbes, Spinoza and Rousseau to Rawls, Nozick and Diderot – and reflecting on the challenges posed by the yellow vest movement, the author rethinks the concept of the social contract for contemporary societies around the world. It proposes a new relationship between the state and the individual, and establishes the necessity of rethinking the modern democratic nature of our representative polities in order to provide a genuine process for the healing of social ills
Cultures at War explains the rise and impact of moral conflicts on the recent political life of western democracies. Smith and Tatalovich conceptualize all moral conflicts as clashes between egalitarian and hierarchical forces. At their core, moral conflicts are debates over "identity" and the status of various groups in society. The book is organized around the "stages" of the policy process, especially agenda-setting and adoption. How the policy process is affected by moral debate is analyzed through numerous case studies drawn mainly from Canada, the United States, the United Kingdom, France, and Germany. Central to the entire analysis are three moral conflicts - capital punishment, homosexuality, and abortion - though others, for example gun control, euthanasia, and fox hunting, are included to illustrate specific points
