IN THE POST-WAR PERIOD THE PEACE MOVEMENT DEVELOPED IN THE CONTEXT OF MANKIND'S HORRIFYING EXPERIENCE OF TWO WORLD WARS IN THE LIVING MEMORY OF A SINGLE GENERATION. THE FEELING OF HORROR AGAINST WAR WAS UNIVERSAL. THE THREAT OF WAR SEEMED IMMINENT AND THE CRY AGAINST WAR RELEVANT AND POIGNANT. CONSEQUENTLY, ONE SECTION OF CONCERNED INTELLECTUALS AND ACTIVISTS CARRIED ON THEIR 'WAR AGAINST A RECURRENCE OF WAR'. DURING THIS PHASE, THE PEACE MOVEMENT CONFINED ITSELF TO THE PREVENTION OF WAR AS ITS MOST IMPORTANT OBJECTIVE AND PROPAGANDA AGAINST IT AS ITS MOST EFFECTIVE WEAPON. HOWEVER, DURING THE 1960S, A NEW DIMENSION TO THE PEACE MOVEMENTS WAS ADDED IN THE FORM OF PEACE RESEARCH AND STUDIES ON THE CAUSES OF WAR. THIS SHIFT WAS BASED ON THE REALIZATION THAT (A) MORE PROPAGANDA AGAINST WAR WOULD BECOME INEFFECTUAL IN THE LONG RUN, AND (B) THE CAUSES LEADING TO WAR MUST BE IDENTIFIED SO THAT CONCERTED ACTION COULD BE TAKEN TO ELIMINATE THEM AND MAKE THE WORLD FREE FROM WAR.
