The interview with the outgoing US assistant secretary of defence, Richard Amitage, sheds light on American and Israeli perceptions of the missile threat in the Middle East. The Bush administration's agreement with the Israeli ministry of defence on joint research, development and implementation of a regional ballistic missile defence test bed - as assigned in March 1989 - is said to be tied in with the strategic defence initiative (SDI), the Reagan administrations project for an intercontinental ballistic missile defence, which already involves Israeli contractors.
