The Federal Republic of Germany considers trade between itself and East Germany not as foreign, but as domestic trade. Since the division of Germany these economic contacts have often given rise to heated discussion and bitter criticism. The close connection between political and economic aims is constantly engendering new fuel. The collision of two completely opposed systems raises a multiplicity of fresh problems.

In this chapter, we explore, from a social justice perspective, conceptions of learners in transition between contexts and evaluate pedagogical practices that have been advocated for such learners. Learning occurs as learners reflect on their transition between contexts, particularly when there are differences in what content knowledge is valued, the relationships between participants and how activities are undertaken. From this perspective, productive pedagogical practices for learners in transition are those that build and sustain relationships between learners and mathematics and between learners and others, including those outside the classroom. We look specifically at examples of pedagogical practices that draw on ethnomathematics and critical mathematics education for their inspiration.

Julia Maurer offers the first comprehensive conceptual and empirical approach to the relationships between foreign subsidiaries. She develops a novel framework for the analysis of intersubsidiary relationships and applies it to the large-scale plant engineering industry. The empirical study confirms that an MNC's strategic orientation has a considerable impact on its intersubsidiary relationships

This article analyzes intra-party dynamics and the transformation of the role of the Communist Party of the Russian Federation (KPRF) within the Russian political system. Although the party is considered to be a member of the so-called "loyal" opposition, the increasing volatility of the party system and growing political instability have implications for future relations between the KPRF and the regime. The article argues that despite the organizational strength and demonstrated loyalty to the regime, the party is currently affected by the problem of "dual commitment," epitomized by a growing center-regions cleavage and ideological incoherence. These two vectors of internal divide are shaped by the context emerging from different intra-system trends and by demographic trends affecting the interaction between the leadership and the rank-and-file of the KPRF. While in the wake of some surprising results from the 2021 legislative elections, the party still seems committed to demonstrating loyalty to the regime; in the long run, the growing intra-party cleavage is likely to affect the role of the KPRF within the party system, opening a new window of opportunity for opposition politics in Russian regions.

By adopting the theme "Encounter between two worlds" for the celebration marking the 500th anniversary of Christopher Columbus's first voyage to the Americas, the international community was seeking to highlight what the Old World and the New World have in common and what can bring the peoples on either side of the Atlantic closer together. Such concern is understandable in a community engaged in a ceaseless quest for a new world order based on dialogue and harmony.

Responds to Melvyn P. Leffler's article, "9/11 and American Foreign Policy" (Diplomatic History, June 2005). Leffler is praised for acknowledging the complex history of US foreign policy when analyzing the policies of the George W. Bush administration; however various weaknesses in his argument are identified. The structure of Leffler's analysis is considered unconvincing, particularly regarding the relationship between threat perception & ideals & values. Also, Leffler is criticized for his non-specific evaluation of Bush's policies. L. Collins Leigh

The author thinks that at the end of the 1980s, the relationship between the PRC and the two superpowers has eased. Two major events in recent history stand out: the opening-up of China to the USA and the political West at the beginning of the 1970s, and China's process of detente towards the USSR which commenced at the turn of the last decade. The article explores a particularly advantageous position for China in the strategic Moscow-Beijing-Washington triangle. (DÜI-Sen)

In the 20th century, Canada's natural resource-based economy came to a head with the burgeoning environmentalism movement. The country's dependency on oil and gas was a blight on its domestic and international profile. To reform the nation's public image and develop its environmental credentials, Canada became an active participant in international environmental fora. The country's reliance on fossil fuels and resource extraction, however, continued unabated. I examine Canadian Environmental Foreign Policy (EFP) through the lens of liberal internationalism, highlighting the tensions between the Canadian economy and environmental politics, using the Paris Agreement (2015) as a focal point.
