Despite trends towards greater LGBTQ (lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, and queer) rights in industrialized democracies, the rights of sexual minorities have become increasingly politicized and restricted throughout Africa. Recognizing religion's central role in shaping attitudes toward gays and lesbians, we hypothesize that local religious diversity could expose individuals to alternative religious perspectives, engender tolerance toward marginalized communities, and therefore dislodge dogmatic beliefs about social issues. Employing cross-national Afrobarometer survey data from 33 countries with an index of district-level religious concentration, we find that respondents living in religiously pluralistic communities are 4-5 points more likely to express tolerance of homosexual neighbors (50% increase) compared to those in homogeneous locales. This effect is not driven by outlier countries, the existence of specific religious affiliations within diverse communities, respondents' religiosity, or other observable and latent factors at the country, sub-national, district, and individual level. Further robustness checks address potential threats to validity. We conclude that religious diversity can foster inclusion of sexual minorities in Africa.

Scholars have long been interested in the cultural differences between the southern US & the rest of the nation. In this study we update & extend earlier work in this area by comparing & tracking the responses of southerners & nonsoutherners to over 75 questions from the 1972-2000 cumulative General Social Surveys. The analyses generate four conclusions. (1) The attitudes & behaviors of southerners are more conservative than those of nonsoutherners in many areas, including race, gender, religion, sex, social capital, & tolerance. (2) The magnitude of these regional differences remains about the same regardless of whether we compare all southerners & nonsoutherners or just white southerners & nonsoutherners. This suggests that southern culture is not just a "white" southern culture as many scholars have argued in the past. (3) The differences between southerners & nonsoutherners persist, although often to a lesser degree, after controlling for structural variables such as education, income, & urbanity. The implication is that southern distinctiveness is a product of both deep-seated cultural differences & structural differences between regions. (4) There is very little evidence that regional differences have declined over the past quarter century, challenging those who contend that southern culture is in retreat. 2 Tables, 1 Appendix, 44 References. The article discusses the life and writings of Blanco White from its context of production and its various intentions. Given the abundant academic production around his figure, which is being developed by historians and literary critics since the second half of the last century, and had little influence at the local level, although several of his writings are aimed at Hispanic, this work builds a short intellectual biographical sketch with aim to provide elements for understanding the character as the main research on his political, literary and theological works. ; El artículo aborda la vida y los escritos de Blanco White a partir de su contexto de producción y sus diversas intencionalidades. The findings in this study indicate that Catholic and Protestant leaders like Cardinal Roger Mahony of the Archdiocese of Los Angeles and Rev. Samuel Rodríguez of the National Hispanic Christian Leadership Conference drew on religious rhetoric, symbols, moral authority, interfaith religious coalition building, and the Bible in the 2005-2007 immigration reform debate and in their struggle for greater tolerance and inclusion of Latinos in U.S. civil society. Mahony and other Catholics also drew on Catholic social teaching and several strategies employed by César Chávez in their struggles for social justice.

It is argued that Soviet policy toward the People's Republic of China since 1960 has been reactive to Chinese initiatives. Both Chinese and Soviet policies are analyzed in the context of the maturation of the Sino-Soviet relationship. The U.S.-Soviet relationship is seen to be the principal axis of conflict within this triangle. China and the Soviet Union now exhibit an increasing realism and tolerance toward each other, with an attempt to minimize their ideological differences and former suspicions. Both countries are committed to normalizing the relationship.

Argues that the Arabic nations, particularly those of the Magreb, limited their modernization following liberation from European colonialism to science, technology, & economics. In an attempt to retain their non-Western identity, they embraced an ideological form of Islam that does not reflect the religion's humanism & tolerance. This has produced totalitarian, nonsecular states that suppress the social expression of tolerant forms of Islam by the majority of their citizens. This political phenomenon, combined with Western leaders' misrepresentation of Islam as an inherently fundamentalist & violent religion, eclipses the genuine Islamic religion defined by brotherhood, faith, & charity. The irony is that Islam, perhaps more than any other world religion, embraces democratic values. A half century of union ascendancy in bargaining is possibly coming to an end. Adverse economic and political circumstances are forcing the unions to concede the bargaining initiative to management. It is now the unions that are cast in the reacting role. The management strategies are identified here as positive, hard-line, and normal bargaining. The union counterstrategies are identified as orderly retreat, quid pro quo, political action, organizing, and pension power. As the economic recovery process gets under way there is some question as to whether the outer limits of membership tolerance for concession may not already have been reached.

Constitutional patriotism has been criticized for providing too thin an identity as the ground for common citizenship. Answering this criticism, Habermas recently stressed the role of affective attachments in creating constitutional patriotic bonds. Still, an account of the type of imagination that could foster such post-national affective attachments is lacking. Drawing on Herder's conception of political culture, I argue that constitutional patriotism requires a modern form of mythology. This would include narratives that shape people's imaginative capacity to see their own culture as a vulnerable and fallible part of a plural mankind and as a free and equal contributor to the global advancement toward humanity. In contrast to ideological mythology, an enlightened use of myth would engage the interactive and communicative potential of poetic images in ways that shape a common feeling of humanity. In short, Habermas' constitutional patriotism requires supplementing the power of law to create bonds between people. This can be done through the cultivation of imaginative engagements with foreign others. Such imaginative engagements would shape good dispositions that are conducive to tolerance, peace and justice. This addition also allows Habermas' argument for constitutional patriotism to better answer the communitarian accusation of supranationalism. Adapted from the source document.
