"Milan Zafirovski identifies and investigates the resurgence of capitalist dictatorship in contemporary society, especially after 2016. This book introduces the concept of capitalist dictatorship to the academic audience for the first time. It examines the capitalist dictatorship as a total social system composed of specific systems such as a coercive economy, repressive polity, illiberal civil society and irrational culture in contrast to liberal democracy. It also investigates multiple dimensions, forms and indicators of capitalist dictatorship, and calculates degrees of capitalist dictatorship for contemporary Western and comparable societies such as OECD countries. Capitalist dictatorship, including autocracy, Zafirovski argues, is the gravest threat to contemporary democratic society post-2016"--
"The corporate business enterprise is a core institution of capitalism. It holds immense political, economic, and cultural power in society. It mobilizes social and planetary resources to its utility in pursuit of private profit maximization and with little regard for social concerns. Its influence over so much of societal life and effects on the natural environment raise critical questions about the firm and its governance in democratic society. Various voices seek reforms of regulation and corporate governance practices to those shaped by the neoliberal policies persisting in the current decades. But prospects for amelioration within our current horizons of thinking appear elusive. This book contributes a distinctly social theoretical approach to the social problem of governing the firm. Its discussions complement debates in economics, politics, and law. Its critical social theorizations challenge conventional understandings of the firm and neoliberal legitimacies of its governance and posit alternatives. The book explores the social relations and moral fabric of the firm and the creativity of human action at work. It proposes a reimagined corporate governance premised on just recognition of that social vitality. It invites unprecedented collaboration for a robust participatory democracy for governing the firm and market action oriented to ecological and social sustainability"--

N. Thomas is seen as unique among US pol'al figures in that he can truly be said to have a soc theory. A biographical sketch reveals that 'the key to Thomas' respectability relates more to his personality than to any quality of mildness in his doctrine.' This lack of mildness is reflected in his defense of democracy as 'the way of life that best conforms to what men ought to be & do,' his absolute rejection of all forms of determinism, & his insistence on a synthesis of knowledge which will act as a foundation for soc philosophy. Asserting man's variability, he remains a marginal pol'al figure, insisting on a fundamental change in the soc order. A review of his books suggests eclecticism, rejection of orthodoxy, & an ongoing soc relativism. Aspects of his theory dealing with technology & development of resources are sketched, & although it is held difficult to evaluate his thinking while he actively implements it, he is characterized as superior both in quality of mind & depth of learning to most US pol'al thinkers. Sociology is a core topic for all trainee health professionals, but many struggle to get to grips with it and to see what sociology has to offer. Based on years of experience teaching sociology to health care students, Lani Russell has written a truly introductory text which explains the main sociological concepts without jargon or becoming too advanced. Using carefully chosen examples, she shows how health issues are influenced by social phenomena such as class, race or sexuality and the relevance this has for practitioners

Over the past few decades, East Asia developments in terms of production, population and trade have shown remarkable dynamics. Ensuing changes in these regions of non-Western civilization are commonly interpreted in terms of a successful adaptation of modernity. However, experiences such as the regional crisis in 1997 and the tragic incident of September 2001 more than ever ask for more intensive civilizational dialogues, and urge us to carefully consider the implications of capitalist development in the East Asian context(s). This book deals with the issues of Asian values, civilizational encounters between East and West, and the development of capitalism and its culture in East Asian countries. Its focus on inter-civilizational exchanges and the intricate interplays between civilizational and capitalist dynamics helps us to better understand our human story and history.

Stalking is an extremely complex and widespread phenomenon, which potentially can produce severe psychological, physical and social effects. As a result of legislative labelling and defining attempts, in addition to interventions of psychiatry and scientific context, these behaviors are now known to the general population as well as at the institutional level. The research, which concentrated initially on the analysis of the different ways of running a campaign of persecution as well as on the stalker identity, later shifted its attention to the victim of such conduct. Stalking, infact, defines itself through its effects on the victims and their reactions: because of their distress, anxiety and fear, these behaviors, sometimes only harassing or annoying, become crimes or illicit activities. In a protection and prevention perspective, the study of victimological aspects of persecutory acts is fundamental, in terms of early recognition of risk situations and evaluation of main coping strategies. The authors, through a literature review on the topic, aim to highlight the importance of research in this field, which is still limited, in order to identify appropriate interventions to reduce the negative consequences of the phenomenon and to protect the victims.

In Chapter 9, Karin Buhmann and her colleagues examine social implication of how climate change has spurred projects in Arctic countries to shift to low-carbon renewable energy sources. Several of these projects have been met by protests by local communities including Indigenous groups concerned with environmental and social impacts. These tensions underscore the need for stronger and meaningful involvement of communities and Indigenous groups and peoples in impact assessments and consultation processes in order to identify and address concerns from the local perspective. Based on cases from Sápmi, Greenland and Canada this chapter shows that renewable energy projects can have perversely negative impacts on community health and safety as well as the traditions and income-generating activities of Arctic Indigenous groups. The authors argue that the need for energy justice highlights the importance of approaching climate change responses and renewable energy transitions in ways that adequately address local concerns, needs and rights in a manner that is meaningful to those who may be adversely affected. ; Peer reviewed
"This book explores the intersection of emotions and migration in a number of case studies from across the United States, Europe and Southeast Asia, including the transmigration of female domestic workers, female workers in the service industries, transmigrant marriages, transmigrant workers in the entertainment industry and asylum seekers and refugees who have experienced violence. Migration is an intensely emotive event in people's everyday lives, yet the study of migration has, to date, overlooked this aspect - this book fills that gap. It brings the study of emotions together with the study of migration for the first time. The interrelationship of geographical and emotional spaces of nation, identity and emotions are examined as they intersect in a complex framing of a raft of emotions characterized by trauma, grief, guilt, love, violence and rage. Emotions in Transmigration provides theoretical analysis and empirical examples of the intersection of emotions and transmigration in relation to movement, transformation and identity in the context of the United States, Europe and Southeast Asia."--Publisher's website
