"An amazing, untold story of the Holocaust, of survivor turned Nazi hunter In the tradition of The Boy in the Woods and By Chance Alone, The Survivor is an unbelievable yet true story of one man's endurance and his determination to not only survive the Holocaust but to bring to justice those who perpetrated great crimes against humanity. This is one of the last great untold stories of the Holocaust. Josef Lewkowicz was the only one left alive in his extended family of 150. The survivor of six concentration camps, he became a Nazi hunter, responsible for bringing to justice his greatest tormentor, the Butcher of Plaszow, the murderous SS camp Kommandant Amon Goeth. Working as part of a covert operation, he also helped to rescue hundreds of orphaned children who had been hidden by doomed parents during the ghetto clearances in Poland. Many of these children were able to begin new lives in Israel. Lewkowicz operated as a diamond dealer in South America, befriended leading Israeli politicians like Prime Minister Menachem Begin, and met Argentine dictator Juan Peron. He raised his family in Montreal. He is now ninety-six years old and lives in Jerusalem. This book, his testimony, captures the spirit, the soul, the neshama of the survivor."--

When we click on a picture of a shopping cart it connects a complex set of technologies to represent a simple idea that we're all familiar with. A heart icon under a photo is understood as an expression of interest or appreciation. Digital metaphors like these are everywhere in our lives, but they aren't just a clever way to describe technology. Metaphors like "the cloud" are also changing the way we think. They are the linchpin for a constant feedback loop between us and the digital technologies we consume. Meaningful Technologies focuses on the feedback loop between digital metaphors and technology: its meaning, how it changes over time, and how it impacts learning and attention. Uniting approaches from philosophy and the cognitive and computer sciences, the authors examine digital technologies, especially social media and smartphone apps like Facebook, Snapchat, and TikTok to offer a systematic reconsideration of the ways in which digital technologies impact our lives both individually and collectively
"With a population of nearly 1.5 billion and the world's second largest economy, China is a major player in the world today, and yet many in the West know very little about contemporary China. This book provides a clear, authoritative and up-to-date history of China since 1949, drawing on extensive research to describe and explain the key developments and to dispel the many myths and misconceptions surrounding this twenty-first-century superpower. In contrast to many commentators who overstate the novelty of the Communist regime, Guiheux emphasizes instead its complex political heritage, highlighting the many continuities it shares with the reformers and revolutionaries of the early twentieth century. At the same time, the ability of China's authoritarian regime to transform the economy and society is key to understanding its breakneck trajectory of modernization - an ability that, as Guiheux explains, far outweighed the importance and effectiveness of Mao's utopian vision. Guiheux also aims to 'de-exoticize' China. While not on the path of a Western-style modernity, China has experienced the same phenomena that have characterized every historical process of modernization: industrialization, urbanization, bureaucratization and globalization. This expertly researched history of the People's Republic of China will be essential reading for all students and scholars of Chinese history and politics, and for anyone interested in contemporary China."--Publisher's description

Doping in sports is a salient issue often discussed in the news, especially during major events such as the Olympics. However, there are still many uncertainties regarding the appropriate legal response.
