In the runup to the 2020 election, the academic journal Nature made the unprecedented decision to endorse Joe Biden for President. During an era when trust in science has never seemed more crucial, this decision led many to wonder if explicitly political statements increase or decrease public trust in science.

Luckily, one PhD graduate from the Stanford School of Business designed a well-crafted experiment to find an answer. Using the Nature endorsement as a test case, Floyd Zhang wrote a paper that helps us explore the effects of public trust when scientific journals make endorsements.

Some research is done in carefully controlled environments—where researchers painstakingly alter variables to determine how their change affects certain outcomes. These experiments, designed to test various theories and hypotheses, are dependent on the ability of researchers to control potential variables. Yet other methodologies focus on situations where the change in variables were dictated by policy, business, or social shifts. When these shifts happen on a large scale, international data is an invaluable tool for determining actual effects. In this column I will explore several international government data sources and their use in academic research.

It should come as no surprise that access to employer property is a high‐priority objective for the union organizer. Access provides better and more opportunities to communicate with potential voters. However, the value of access goes beyond communication. Union access to the workplace itself allows organizers to acquire firsthand knowledge of working conditions and parlay their observations into campaign points. Protecting an employer's property rights, therefore, is an essential element of a union‐free strategy. The U.S. Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) is about to make securing that protection a little harder for businesses.

AbstractWe examine Paycheck Protection Program (PPP) lending among African American and white farmers. Using data from the U.S. Small Business Administration we run fixed effect estimations with a Mills inverse ratio. Our findings suggest discrimination due to limited capital access. We find statistically significant differences between approved loan amounts among African American farmers due to income level and location of their farms. These had minimal effects on white farmers. Our results call for policymakers to carefully monitor the PPP distribution in areas more vulnerable to financial difficulties. We provide policy recommendations.

AbstractWe present a simple agency model with a monopolist lender and an individual facing an occupational choice between entering the labor market as a wage worker and starting a self‐managed business. We show that, when the reservation utility is relatively low, the lender may not want to offer any credit contract, so the individual is forced to become a wage worker out of necessity, whereas when the reservation utility is high, the bank may find it profitable to finance the investment project, and the individual can choose to become an entrepreneur out of opportunity.

The paper attempts to indicate the widespread use of internet facilities and their easy availability as well as their usage on various spheres of life, be it the government, judiciary, business houses, and societal issues. The positive and negative impact of this medium has been addressed in detail in this paper. The result being that none of the above arms of the system can ignore the strength of this medium. There are detrimental impacts, for example, the spread of fake news, which has to be quickly nipped in the bud before it becomes a nuisance.

The paper deals with the comparison of conceptual images of function among secondary school students. The main purpose is to compare the understanding of the concept of function between students of the business academy and secondary grammar schools with different specializations. The article defines the terms "concept image" and "concept definition", describes the methodology based on the evaluation of the questionnaire and the most important results of the analysis of the obtained data. As part of the analysis, the "concept image" of function of mathematics teachers and their students is also compared.

Issues related to the formation of socially responsible personnel management are studied using the example of companies in the food industry. A generalized formation of a business philosophy model based on the main components of corporate social responsibility (CSR) is proposed. Building a personnel management system based on CSR principles, taking into account HR-nhtylsd. Methodical approach to evaluating the level of effectiveness of personnel management in terms of CSR components using reporting indicators of food industry companies. Bei der Fabrikplanung ist die Produktionslinienplanung von hoher Komplexität geprägt und mit herkömmlichen Methoden nicht zufriedenstellend lösbar. Das Problem lebt im hochdimensionalen Raum und muss dort gelöst werden. Dieser repräsentiert die Eigenschaften der Produkte, zugehörige Produktionsprozesse und betriebswirtschaftliche Aspekte. Es wird ein Konzept zur automatisierten Linienplanung inklusive der Montagereihenfolgeplanung, Werksauswahl, Liniengestaltung und Werkerzuordnung vorgestellt.

In factory planning, production line planning is characterized by a high complexity and cannot be solved satisfactorily with conventional methods. The problem lives in a high-dimensional space and must be solved there. This space represents the characteristics of the products, associated production processes and business aspects. A concept for automated line planning including assembly sequence planning, plant selection, line layout and worker assignment is presented.

This paper examines roles of the government in responding to the COVID-19 pandemic in the United States. The paper provides theoretical background of government's roles in the market system and in the public health profession. Based on practical cases, academic studies, and public survey data during the first year of the pandemic, the paper analyzes government's roles as: protector of public health and safety, regulator of business operations and individual behaviors, and manager of economic stability and growth. The paper concludes with discussions about the characteristics of governmental intervention, critiques of governmental failure, and challenges of government collaboration.

The meteoric rise of TikTok, the video-sharing app owned by Chinese technology giant ByteDance, is already being hailed as a potent platform for political expression, but this is complicated by its economic and geopolitical entanglements, namely the ongoing power rivalry between China and the US, as well as TikTok's adherence to a business bottom line. This short commentary aims to unpack some of the structural issues which contextualise TikTok's particular brand of political ambivalence ahead of designations of the platform as a meaningful site for political participation.

In what seems to many as the proverbial blink of an eye, we are again looking at calendars that are near the end of their annual usefulness, digging out sweaters and gloves and becoming inundated with holiday sales and end‐of‐year specials. It would be an understatement to say that 2022 was an interesting year. For many, it has been the first full year of exiting the worst of the pandemic. Supply chain issues, relatively speaking, eased. Businesses struggled with a "new norm" with respect to hybrid and work‐from‐home issues, inflationary pressures, and a challenging labor market.

We investigated the relationship between workplace fun and work engagement as well as the mediating role of workplace guanxi. Participants were 272 Master of Business Administration students at a Chinese university who were working in various enterprises. The results of structural equation
modeling revealed that workplace fun was positively related to work engagement and that this direct relationship was mediated by workplace guanxi. Our study is the first to empirically test the role of workplace guanxi as a mediator of the workplace fun–work engagement link. Implications
of the findings and suggestions for future research are discussed.

There are many indicators that display characteristics to assess the flexibility and adaptability of quality management systems. However, from the point of view of the effect and effectiveness of these individual characteristics of the system, it is advisable to take those indicators that are primarily related to the financial component of evaluating the results of the quality management systems of business processes of enterprises. The novelty of the research is determined by the fact that the most comprehensive approach affects the positions of financing the quality management system, investment and operating costs of this system.
