Within the framework of relationship marketing, the authors hypothesized that the degree to which customers' expectations were disconfirmed for different service dimensions would place customers on different levels of a commitment ladder. The steps on the commitment ladder studied ranged from being a one-time patron of an organization (a "customer") to persuading others to switch to one's own service firm (an "advocate"). On a sample of 2,007 patrons from three service businesses, some support for predicting commitment levels based on disconfirmations of specific facets of service was found. Implications and conclusions are discussed.

Diversification not only internalizes transactions of goods and services, but it also internalizes transactions of capital. Hence, the value of diversification will depend, inter alia, on whether internal capital markets are relatively efficient or inefficient. This essay reviews and discusses the possible benefits and costs of internal capital markets by conducting a careful comparative institutional analysis. The essay concludes that internal capital markets can add value to lines of business only under a limited number of circumstances. Some recent developments in the organization of internal capital markets in diversified firms can be understood as attempts to increase their efficiency.

Stanley Walker's 1934 book, City Editor, remains applicable to the news business today. Walker examines issues such as ethics, deadline pressure, & the "sweet satisfactions" of the industry -- all factors that have remained relevant ever since the book was written. At the same time, many new trends have emerged. Instead of walking a "beat," many journalists today never leave their office. The competition factor among newspapers themselves has nearly disappeared. From 1992 to 1997, the Provisional IRA (PIRA) engaged in a protracted campaign of economic targeting against central business districts & transport systems in GB, using a range of explosive devices. There is evidence that the campaign had significant economic & political effects, although PIRA was operating in an adverse security environment & many of its actions failed. The article analyzes the origins, development, & impact of the campaign & places it in the context of actions by other paramilitary organizations, exploring its significance for the evolution of political violence in relation to the vulnerabilities of urban industrial states. In the spring of 1999, I competed for the chance to participate in an African study-abroad program. The program was sponsored by The Africa Program, founded in 1994 with a goal of promoting business relationships between Texas and Africa. Recognizing the crucial role that education plays in fostering such an economic venture, The Africa Program offered to send qualified candidates to study in the Senegambia region of West Africa in the summer of 1999. The selection was open to students and faculty of the University of Texas at Arlington, both undergraduate and graduate, and to the community at large.

The idea of "spin doctors," who have become prominent in the US media business, is discussed, with focus on their activities in political communication. Spin doctors present policy, opinions, & background information with an intended "spin." For journalists these public relation officers are of ambivalent value: on the one hand, they can offer exclusive information, but on the other hand, they are illegitimate actors who can threaten the functioning of democracy. Old means of measuring employee effectiveness and value are now outdated and incomplete. In contrast with the past, the knowledge worker is now the dominant source of value creation in an organization. Organizations must develop metrics that measure knowledge worker value. This article explains the use of the human capital approach, which calculates investments and returns on individuals to measure their impact and justify investments. The human capital approach aligns the human resource function with the business. A case study of one company's successful use of the human capital approach demonstrates the advantages of this perspective.

Profitable private investments may be bypassed in struggling regions due precisely to such regions' isolation, leading to a self‐reinforcing cycle of marginalization. In many cases, development in such regions may be most effectively promoted by providing key information to the private and public sectors, thus addressing potentially significant market failures. In the case study project, the calculation of private and social returns have been particularly crucial in sparking both private investor interest and public support of this business venture. The project's example suggests an updated role for universities in the assistance of productive economic development programs.

Looks at the findings of a survey of 115 Saudi Arabian managers who had completed their undergraduate education in the United States in relation to the informational and computing resources and their applications in Saudi organisations. Considers the role of computers in business and highlights the lack of specialists able to train within the country. Concludes that whilst the skills to use information technology exist, they are limited by cultural resistance to change, traditional viewpoints, authoritarian leadership and bureaucracy. Advocates government encouragement and ties with developed nations to help change such attitudes.

The purpose of this study is to determine whether a tax credit provides an incentive for taxpayers to give to a certain type of charitable organization, the community foundation. The State of Michigan's 1988 Tax Credit for Community Foundations provides an opportunity to research this effect using data collected over five years from fifteen community foundations in Michigan. Results indicate that the size and number of individual and business donations to community foundations were positively influenced by the tax credit, implying that the tax credit was successful in achieving the goal of encouraging giving to these charitable organizations.

AbstractThis article explores the issue of mediator neutrality in the context of a business organization's dispute resolution system. The potential power of discourse in intra‐organization mediation to disempower individuals and maintain the status quo can be offset by a mediator's intimate knowledge of the organization and its dynamics. In the model presented in this article, an active neutrality as proposed by Cobb, Rifkin, and Susskind is suggested as appropriate. A mediator using the concept of active neutrality may foster discourse that assists in surfacing hidden values and assumptions and may empower individuals to have a voice in their organization.

Research into sculture and entrepreneurship in Britain has been dominated by casual empiricism. This article shows the benefits of using a new method. Lifetime wealth accumulation is specified as a measure of entrepreneurial performance, and applied to data collected from dictionaries of business biography. Industry, region, and religious dissent are ruled out as explanations of entrepreneurial performance. Education and entrepreneurial type are the important predictors. Firm inheritors and those receiving a high-status education experienced relatively low lifetime rates of wealth accumulation. Firm founders, managers, and individuals with a lower-status education were comparatively successful.
