El Proyecto General de Investigación "Muerte y Ritual Funerario en Baelo Claudia" desarrollado por la Universidad de Alicante en la necrópolis oriental de Baelo Claudia, ha detectado una más que interesante ocupación medieval, encuadrable entre los siglos XIII- XIV y caracterizada por la presencia de materiales cerámicos de tradición meriní junto con el hallazgo de una moneda de Sancho IV. Esta ocupación, asociada a un posible expolio de diversos monumentos funerarios, podría tener relación con uno de los episodios históricos más relevantes de la región como fue la conquista de la plaza de Tarifa en 1292 y la posibilidad de la existencia de un campamento militar castellano en la ensenada de Bolonia aprovechando que aún se alzaban importantes restos arquitectónicos de la antigua ciudad hispanorromana. ; The General Research Project "Death and Funeral Ritual in Baelo Claudia" developed by the University of Alicante in the eastern necropolis of Baelo Claudia, has detected a very interesting medieval occupation level, dating from the XIIIth and XIVth centuries and characterized by the presence of meriní pottery and the discovery of a coin of Sancho IV. This occupation, associated with a possible spoliation of several funerary monuments, could be related to one of the most important historical events of the region as the conquest of Tarifa in 1292 and the possibility of the existence of a military castilian camp in the ensenada de Bolonia, that took advantage of the important architectural remains of the ancient hispano-roman city that still stood.

No one is better qualified than Dudley S. Brainard to tell the story of St. Cloud State Teachers College. As teacher and administrator he has observed the development of the college for more than a quarter of a century. With the discernment and impeccable good taste of the skilled historian, he has etched, painstakingly and with keen understanding, the important events in the growth of the college. This story, however, is, more than the story of St. Cloud State Teachers College. It is the story of the establishment of publicly-supported teacher education in the State of Minnesota. Attention is directed, quite appropriately, to the importance of the professional education of teachers for the public schools. This importance has not always been recognized as is indicated in the cataloging of the sometimes harrowing events in t he early history of the college. But as the story unfolds one gains a sense of well-being. It is clearly evident that great progress has been made. Over the span of years St. Cloud State Teachers College has grown from a normal school offering little beyond the traditional secondary education to a full-fledged college presenting four years of professional education for the preparation of teachers. The degree of excellence achieved by that four-year program has been recognized by both the North Central Association of Colleges and Secondary Schools and the American Association of Colleges for Teacher Education. The college is accredited by both these agencies. In the summer of 1953 a graduate program leading to the degree Master of Science in Education was initiated. Authority to offer this program was granted by the 1953 Legislature of the State of Minnesota with the whole-hearted and active support of the teachers of the state represented by their professional organization, the Minnesota Education Association. To the younger generation, this history is the story of their heritage. lt is a precious heritage and an important one. The traditions of the college and the lofty ideals of its founders come alive for the reader. "A new history of liberalism which argues that liberalism has been predicated on definite morality and should be viewed as an attempt to encompass both fear and hope. Liberalism, argues Alan Kahan, is the search for a society in which people need not be afraid. Freedom from fear is the most basic freedom. If we are afraid, we are not free. These insights, found in Montesquieu and Judith Shklar, are the foundation of liberalism. What liberals fear has changed over time (revolution, reaction, totalitarianism, religious fanaticism, poverty, and now populism) but the great majority of liberal thinkers have relied on three pillars to ward off their fears and to limit the concentrated power that causes fear: freedom, markets, and morals, or, to put it another way, politics, economics, and religion or morality. Most liberal thinkers emphasize one or two pillars more than another, but it is typical of liberalism down to the Second World War to rely on all three, although there were always minority voices who preferred to stand on only one leg. After WWII, "thin" procedural/market liberals, who wanted to strip any moral or religious basis or purpose from liberalism, dominated "thick" liberal moralists, who thought liberalism needed a moral basis and/or goal. It is the political contention of this book that liberalism is most convincing as program, language, and social analysis when it relies on all three pillars, and that the relative weakness of liberalism at the end of the twentieth century had much to do with neglect of the moral pillar of liberalism. Its historical contention is that for much of the past two centuries it did rely on all three pillars. But Kahan also argues that liberalism is not only a party of fear. It is also a party of hope, or the party of progress. Many of the contradictions typical of liberalism derive from the seemingly contradictory effort to encompass both hope and fear. If in case of conflict fear often trumps hope for liberals (loss aversion applies in politics as much as in economics), and utopia is subject to indefinite postponement, progress in personal autonomy and development has always been at the heart of liberalism. Liberals typically support their hopes on the same three pillars of freedom, markets, and morals which they use to ward off their fears. Nevertheless, in one respect those historians and political theorists who identify liberalism with laissez-faire economics are not wrong. It is characteristic of liberalism then that it bases its hopes not on the state but on civil society, which for liberals is the common source of a free politics, a free market, and of morals.
