Some people dwell alone, many in family-based households, and an adventuresome few in communes. The Household is the first book to systematically lay bare the internal dynamics of these and other home arrangements. Legal underpinnings, social considerations, and economic constraints all influence how household participants select their homemates and govern their interactions around the hearth. Robert Ellickson applies transaction cost economics, sociological theory, and legal analysis to explore issues such as the sharing of household output, the control of domestic misconduct, and the ownership of dwelling units. Drawing on a broad range of historical and statistical sources, Ellickson contrasts family-based households with the more complex arrangements in medieval English castles, Israeli kibbutzim, and contemporary cohousing communities. He shows that most individuals, when structuring their home relationships, pursue a strategy of consorting with intimates. This, he asserts, facilitates informal coordination and tends ultimately to enhance the quality of domestic interactions. He challenges utopian critics who seek to enlarge the scale of the household and legal advocates who urge household members to rely more on written contracts and lawsuits. This handbook articulates how sociology can re-engage its roots as the scientific study of human moral systems, actions, and interpretation. This second volume builds on the successful original volume published in 2010, which contributed to the initiation of a new section of the American Sociological Association (ASA), thus growing the field. This volume takes sociology back to its roots over a century ago, when morality was a central topic of work and governance. It engages scholars from across subfields in sociology, representing each section of the ASA, who each contribute a chapter on how their subfield connects to research on morality. This reference work appeals to broader readership than was envisaged for the first volume, as the relationship between sociology as a discipline and its origins in questions of morality is further renewed. The volume editors focus on three areas: the current state of the sociology of morality across a range of sociological subfields; taking a new look at some of the issues discussed in the first handbook, which are now relevant in sometimes completely new contexts; and reflecting on where the sociology of morality should go next. En el transcurrir de los últimos años las ciencias sociales han ido evolucionando teórica y metodológicamente, a la par de las transformaciones estructurales de las sociedades producto de coyunturas de diversa naturaleza genésica, pero que al fi nal los elementos de mayor incidencia en estos cambios son los de corte político, económico y tecnológico, creándose de manera procesal nuevos paquetes culturales, los cuales en su mayoría necesitan de nuevos medios paradigmáticos para ser entendidos en primera instancia por minorías y de allí transitar a la explicación para las masas. En este sentido, es perentorio señalar que en la actualidad se cuenta con una nueva metodología para reconstruir procesos socio-históricos o de otra índole; nos referimos a la historia oral. Esta línea metodológica, paulatinamente, se ha ido convirtiendo en un área de investigación, la cual contribuye al estudio social y de la historia en distintas perspectivas; entre ellas podemos nombrar la posibilidad que tiene el investigador de trascender del uso del documento escrito como univoca fuente a lo que sería la utilización del testimonio oral,pudiendo el investigador acercarse aún más a la realidad objeto de estudio a través de la entrevista a un actor de determinado hecho. ; Dans les dernières années les sciences sociales ont été évoluées théoriquement et méthodologiquement, avec aux transformations structurelles des sociétés comme produit de conjonctures de diverse nature génésique, mais á la fi n, les éléments les plus incidents, dans ces changements, sont auxquels qu'ont un ordre politique, économique, et technologique en créant de manière du procès nouveaux paquets culturels,lesquels, la plupart ont besoin de nouveaux moyens paradigmatiques pour pouvoir être entendus, premièrement par les minorités et après par les masses. Social-ecological network (SEN) concepts and tools are increasingly used in human-environment and sustainability sciences. We take stock of this budding research area to further show the strength of SEN analysis for complex human-environment settings, identify future synergies between SEN and wider human-environment research, and provide guidance about when to use different kinds of SEN approaches and models. We characterize SEN research along a spectrum specifying the degree of explicit network representation of system components and dynamics. We then systematically review one end of this spectrum, what we term 'fully articulated SEN' studies, which specifically model unique social and ecological units and relationships. Results show a larger number of papers focus on methodological advancement and applied ends. While there has been some development and testing of theories, this remains an area for future work and would help develop SENs as a unique field of research, not just a method. Authors have studied diverse systems, while mainly focusing on the problem of social-ecological fit alongside a scattering of other topics. There is strong potential, however, to engage other issues central to human-environment studies. Analyzing the simultaneous effects of multiple social, environmental, and coupled processes, change over time, and linking network structures to outcomes are also areas for future advancement. This review provides a comprehensive assessment of (fully articulated) SEN research, a necessary step that can help scholars develop comparable cases and fill research gaps.

We examine the role of self-monitoring personality in shaping network change in two important types of social relationships. In a two-wave social network study, we find that individuals with higher levels of self-monitoring derive persistent personality-linked in-degree centrality benefits in the general socializing network but have fading benefits over time in the close friendship network. Simultaneous examination of the formation and dissolution of relationships over time (network churn) reveals that this pattern of network change is shaped by differential reactions of relationship partners to individuals based upon level of self-monitoring in the two network types. Overall, by incorporating the dynamic reactions of relationship partners, the findings contribute to the understanding of the complex relationship between personality and social network development.

The report argues that policy‐makers fail to make effective use of the high quality research of UK academics in the humanities and social sciences. Yet greater co‐operation between the government and academia could undermine the independence of the latter by increasing the role of the state in the funding and direction of university research.

Résumé L'Institut universitaire européen (IUE), ouvert en 1976 à Florence, incarne l'ambition de légitimer la construction européenne par la connaissance scientifique. Cet article cherche à comprendre comment ces injonctions politiques se réfractent dans l'activité scientifique de l'IUE, à identifier le type de savoirs produits à l'institut et à comprendre leur contribution à la structuration d'une archive européenne. À partir d'une étude de l'histoire du département de sciences politiques et sociales (SPS) sur la base d'archives diversifiées, il montre la manière dont s'impose au département une science politique béhavioraliste, quantitative et comparative de l'Europe. L'histoire de cette victoire paradigmatique met en évidence l'un des mécanismes par lesquels se structurent certaines des approches aujourd'hui centrales pour les études européennes.

Cette présentation des lettres, au nombre de cent soixante, adressées par Paul de Rousiers à Robert Pinot, de 1891 à 1895, met l'accent sur les évènements majeurs intervenus au cours de cette période dont la correspondance rend compte : le succès rencontrée par La vie américaine , l'entrée au Musée social de R. Pinot et, surtout, les deux enquêtes menées par P. de Rousiers en Angleterre. Les lettres constituent ainsi un véritable journal de terrain de la science sociale en train de se faire en cette fin de siècle.

The purpose of this article is to examine the neoliberal origins of the discourse of social appropriation of science and technology in Colombia. In particular, it attempts to demonstrate that the values and attitudes towards science and technology promoted through such discourse have been associated directly with the attainment of the goals of production and development goals promoted by the new economic liberalization model that initiated during the decade of the eighties and was consolidated under the Gaviria government during the decade of the nineties. The foregoing is accomplished starting with an overview of the concept of science policy in order to provide a general context, then a description of what might be denominated as the official (or semiofficial) version of the origin of the term in Colombian science policy, followed by a more complex and more informative narrative of its origin, and finally, concluding with commentaries concerning the fate of the term in later Colombian science policy. ; Mi propósito en este artículo es indagar sobre los orígenes neoliberales del discurso de apropiación social de la ciencia y la tecnología en Colombia. En particular, intento mostrar que los valores o las actitudes promovidos hacia la ciencia y la tecnología mediante dicho discurso, se han asociado directamente con el logro de las metas de producción y desarrollo económico impulsadas por el nuevo modelo de apertura económica que inicia en los años ochenta y se consolida en la década de los noventa con el gobierno Gaviria. Para esto, empiezo con una breve mirada al concepto de política científica, para dar un contexto general. Luego paso a describir lo que podría denominarse la versión oficial (o semioficial) del origen del término en la política científica colombiana, antes de ofrecer una versión más compleja, pero mucho más informativa, de ese origen.
