A fundamental belief in personal liberty and in the ability of free markets to realise the good lies at the heart of the neoliberal economic orthodoxy that has now shaped public policy for a generation. Confidence in orthodox economics has, however, been badly shaken by the financial crisis of 2008 and, in the years following, by the effects of the Great Recession. The era of casino banking was not only an era of de-industrialisation and under-employment, but also of iniquitous tax avoidance schemes, and of grotesquely inflated levels of social inequality. Such factors, we now realise, have reduced the life-prospects of millions of our fellow-citizens. This interdisciplinary volume of essays, with wide-ranging contributions by theologians and social scientists, explores the theological, economic, and moral implications of these developments. Its central claim is that neoliberalism's failure to appreciate the limitations of its fiduciary commitments contributed massively to the economic crisis. A more honest appraisal of the relation between the language of belief and the sphere of economic behaviour is therefore required. This must also result in appropriate policy changes, to harness the power of the economy to serve a more generous vision of the human good

Sir John Templeton (1912-2008), the Wall Street legend who has been described as "arguably the greatest global stock picker of the twentieth century," clearly knew what it took to be successful. The most important thing, he observed, was to have strong convictions that guided your life-this was the common denominator he saw in all successful people and enterprises. Fortunately for us, he was eager to share his own blueprint for personal success and happiness with the rest of the world. In The Templeton Plan, he laid out the twenty-one guiding principles by which he governed both hi

Year 2015 marked the Extraordinary Jubilee of Mercy. In his Bull of Indiction, Pope Francis called upon Catholics to return to the corporal works of mercy, including the welcoming of strangers.Solidarity with refugees has been a recurring theme of his papacy. In his address to the EU Parliament in 2014, for instance, Pope Francis called for a "united response to the question of migration"; he cautioned against allowing "the Mediterranean to become a vast cemetery" of people who come to Europe needing "acceptance and assistance." Likewise, in addressing the US Congress in 2015, Pope Francis exhorted that "We must not be taken aback by their [refugee] numbers, but rather view them as persons, seeing their faces and listening to their stories, trying to respond as best we can to their situation." ; peer-reviewed
While garnering the attention of professionals across disciplines, from medicine to public health to psychology, and frequently covered as a topic of public concern in the news media, the elevated occurrence of suicide attempts among LGBTQ persons has earned little attention within the literature of theology and religious studies. This book fills that lacuna by addressing the role that religious, spiritual, and theological narratives play in shaping the souls of queer folk. Taking a narrative approach to qualitative interview material from LGBTQ individuals who survived their suicide attempts, the author argues that theological narratives can operate violently upon the souls of LGBTQ people in ways that make life precarious and, at time, seem unlivable. The book critically addresses the violence of theological narratives upon queer souls, filling a crucial void in scholarship concerning the role of religion-and specifically Christianity-in LGBTQ suicide. Ultimately, the author draws upon the interview material to move readers toward constructive methods of contributing to the resistance and resilience of queer souls in relation to soul violence, asking how we can intervene with practices of care in order to cultivate livability of life for queer people
