The Current Population Survey data from 1947 to 1985 reveals that industrial employment shifts had a greater impact on increasing income inequality than other economic or demographic influences. The greater impact is due to the size of the shift. Increased dependency and occupational employment shifts also increased inequality over the period. (Abstract amended)
