Christian Kaden nimmt seine Leser mit auf eine Entdeckungsreise zu un-erhörten Musik-Kulturen diesseits und jenseits von Europa, von der Antike bis zur Gegenwart, in denen Musik in religiöses, politisches und soziales Leben eingebunden war und ist und damit weit über das rein Klangliche hinausweist. Dabei wird die Fülle des Musik-Möglichen und des in Musik Lebensmöglichen entdeckt. Es kommen dabei Formen von Musik in den Blick, die aus der abendländischen Zivilisationsgeschichte ausgemustert wurden: scheinbar "fremde" Traditionen mit ihrer Betonung von Verzauberung, Ekstase, Mit-Menschlichkeit, mit der Einheit von Schönem und Gutem, Ästhetik und Ethik, Mystik und Widerstand. Kaden thematisiert auch die Körperfeindlichkeit vieler Musik- Konzepte, musikalischen Imperialismus und Fremdenhass.
