Background and Purpose: Both adherence to the Mediterranean diet (MedDiet) and the use of metformin could benefit the cognitive performance of individuals with type 2 diabetes, but evidence is still controversial. We examined the association between metformin use and cognition in older adults with type 2 diabetes following a MedDiet intervention. Methods: Prospective cohort study framed in the PREDIMED-Plus-Cognition sub-study. The PREDIMED-Plus clinical trial aims to compare the cardiovascular effect of two MedDiet interventions, with and without energy restriction, in individuals with overweight/obesity and metabolic syndrome. The present sub-study included 487 cognitively normal subjects (50.5% women, mean ± SD age of 65.2 ± 4.7 years), 30.4% of them (N = 148) with type 2 diabetes. A comprehensive battery of neurocognitive tests was administered at baseline and after 1 and 3 years. Individuals with type 2 diabetes that exhibited a good glycemic control trajectory, either using or not using metformin, were compared to one another and to individuals without diabetes using mixed-effects models with inverse probability of treatment weights. Results: Most subjects with type 2 diabetes (83.1%) presented a good and stable glycemic control trajectory. Before engaging in the MedDiet intervention, subjects using metformin scored higher in executive functions (Cohen's d = 0.51), memory (Cohen's d = 0.38) and global cognition (Cohen's d = 0.48) than those not using metformin. However, these differences were not sustained during the 3 years of follow-up, as individuals not using metformin experienced greater improvements in memory (β = 0.38 vs. β = 0.10, P = 0.036), executive functions (β = 0.36 vs. β = 0.02, P = 0.005) and global cognition (β = 0.29 vs. β = -0.02, P = 0.001) that combined with a higher MedDiet adherence (12.6 vs. 11.5 points, P = 0.031). Finally, subjects without diabetes presented greater improvements in memory than subjects with diabetes irrespective of their exposure to metformin (β = 0.55 vs. β = 0.10, P < 0.001). However, subjects with diabetes not using metformin, compared to subjects without diabetes, presented greater improvements in executive functions (β = 0.33 vs. β = 0.08, P = 0.032) and displayed a higher MedDiet adherence (12.6 points vs. 11.6 points, P = 0.046). Sexually Transmitted Disease Surveillance 2011 presents statistics and trends for sexually transmitted diseases (STDs) in the United States through 2011. This annual publication is intended as a reference document for policy makers, program managers, health planners, researchers, and others who are concerned with the public health implications of these diseases. The figures and tables in this edition supersede those in earlier publications of these data. Prior to the publication of Sexually Transmitted Disease Surveillance 2010, when the percentage of unknown, missing, or invalid values for age group, race/ethnicity, and sex exceeded 50% for any state, the state's incidence and population data were excluded from the tables that presented data stratified by one or more of these variables. For the states for which 50% or more of their data were valid for age group, race/ ethnicity, and sex, the values for unknown, missing, or invalid data were redistributed on the basis of the state's distribution of known age group, race/ethnicity, and sex data. Beginning with the publication of Sexually Transmitted Disease Surveillance 2010, redistribution methodology is not applied to any of the data. The counts presented in this report are summations of all valid data reported in reporting year 2011. Because missing data are excluded from calculations of rates by age group, race/ethnicity, and sex, incidence rates by these characteristics, particularly by race/ ethnicity for chlamydia and gonorrhea, appear somewhat lower than in previous reports. The surveillance information in this report is based on the following sources of data: (1) notifiable disease reporting from state and local STD programs; (2) projects that monitor STD positivity and prevalence in various settings, including regional Infertility Prevention Projects, the National Job Training Program, the STD Surveillance Network, and the Gonococcal Isolate Surveillance Project; and (3) other national surveys implemented by federal and private organizations. The STD surveillance systems operated by state and local STD control programs, which provide the case report data for chlamydia, gonorrhea, syphilis, and chancroid, are the data sources of many of the figures and most of the statistical tables in this publication. These systems are an integral part of program management at all levels of STD prevention and control in the United States. Because of incomplete diagnosis and reporting, the number of STD cases reported to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention is less than the actual number of cases occurring in the U.S. population. National summary data of case reports for other STDs are not available because they are not nationally notifiable diseases. Sexually Transmitted Disease Surveillance 2011 consists of four sections: the National Profile, the Special Focus Profiles, the Tables, and the Appendix. The National Profile section contains figures that provide an overview of STD morbidity in the United States. The accompanying text identifies major findings and trends for selected STDs. The Special Focus Profiles section contains figures and text that describe STDs in selected populations that are a focus of national and state prevention efforts. The Tables section provides statistical information about STDs at county, metropolitan statistical area, regional, state, and national levels. The Carole Ashkinaze papers are organized into three series consisting of manuscript materials (correspondence), printed materials (her columns, research articles and articles written about Carole Ashkinaze), and finally photographs and artifacts. The majority of the manuscripts and printed materials are related to Ashkinaze's coverage of the movement to ratify the Equal Rights Amendment in Georgia, letters from readers regarding her columns both applauding and denigrating her work, her ideas on race, poverty and politics, and some personal material. Series I is dedicated to correspondence she received while working at Newsday, the Atlanta Journal & Constitution and the Chicago Sun-Times, circa 1974-1992. Series II contains printed materials, the bulk of which are her columns from the AJC and the CST. This series also contains her own research materials, articles that Ashkinaze read about pertinent social issues, and articles that were perhaps used in her 1991 book, The Closing Door: Conservative Policy and Black Opportunity, which she co-authored with Gary Orfield. In this series there are also a number of articles chronicling her professional achievements. Series III contains a small collection of photographs, artifacts and some of the many journalism awards (plaques and framed certificates) she received during her early career, including a replica of the Pulitzer Prize Gold Medal, which she shared for investigative reporting at Newsday (presented to her by her employer, who retains the actual gold medal), and a resolution from the Georgia House of Representatives in recognition of her columns on women's issues. Ashkinaze was pleased that her columns and a weekly TV show ("About Women") she hosted on the newspaper's cable channel helped to persuade the legislature to rid the Georgia Code of discriminatory rules and language, and to install a long-overdue women's restroom for female legislators in the Georgia House chamber. ; Carole Ashkinaze was born in Manhattan, New York, on January 20th 1945. Ashkinaze spent her childhood in the suburban town of Malverne, Long Island in Nassau County, approximately twenty miles outside of New York [City]. She attended St. Lawrence University in New York, spending her junior year abroad (at the Sorbonne and the University of Rouen) and graduated with honors from St. Lawrence; then went on to pursue a master's degree in journalism from Columbia University Graduate School of Journalism in 1967. After graduating, Ashkinaze went to work for Newsday on Long Island, remaining six and a half years. But it was her role as reporter and then columnist and editorial board member for the Atlanta Journal & Constitution that won her national recognition. Ashkinaze worked for the AJC from 1976 through 1989, eventually moving to the Chicago Sun-Times, working as both a columnist and as a member of the editorial board. In Atlanta, Ashkinaze wrote about a number of controversial issues including the Equal Rights Amendment, abortion, women's rights, feminism, poverty, health-care, politics, education and race. In Chicago, where Ashkinaze was the only pro-choice commentator for any major Chicago news organization, and a member of the Chicago Sun-Times editorial board, her columns won many journalism awards and a large popular following; she was also a popular radio and TV personality, and regular panelist on "The Lassiter Group." Her pro-choice columns in the Sun-Times also made her a target of abortion foes, one of whom sent her several nude pictures of himself, bearing obscene messages. In 1992, following the publication of her 1991 book, The Closing Door: Conservative Policy and Black Opportunity (with Gary Orfield), about race and poverty, Ashkinaze left the Sun-Times and returned to Atlanta to work with former President Jimmy Carter on his first domestic policy initiative, The Atlanta Project (later called The America Project), which was an attempt to alleviate the worst aspects of poverty across an entire community. She contributed her services to that project, working pro bono until the following year, when she was named Media Chief of the United Nations Children's Fund and moved to New York. She later left UNICEF and moved to Washington, D.C. as a freelance journalist, writing for such national publications as Business Week, Horizon, and Moment magazines. After the September 11, 2001 attacks in New York and Washington, she became a consultant to the American Civil Liberties Union. Reports she wrote and edited for the ACLU included Civil Liberties After 9/11 (2002) and Freedom Under Fire (2003). This is a different history than the progress of the disease in other cities."• In other cities, influenza has made "geometrical progression," from 1,000 to 2,000 to 4,000 to 8,000, etc.• At 11 pm yesterday, the health dept. reported there were 1,861 cases in the past 24 hours, but this included cases reported by mail on Sunday.• Breakdown of deaths in those 24 hours: 43 from influenza, 9 from lobar pneumonia, 9 from bronchial pneumonia.• 4 people who died in other cities were brought to Buffalo for burial.• "In this city for the first time in the country the epidemic has been held early in its ravages to nearly level numbers on successive days."• This was discussed at the meeting of the control committee yesterday.• "Gave hope that Buffalo may not be so completely swept by the epidemic as have other communities."• Medical experts on that committee said that the slowing of the spread is due to the closing orders.• Major A. E. Brownrigg of Ft. Porter serves as an advising physician on the control committee, and said that Buffalo's numbers of cases and deaths were much better than elsewhere in the country.• Yesterday, police wore masks, as well as soldiers at Ft. Porter.• Barbers were also seen wearing masks, as well as nurses on visiting tours, tellers, cashiers, factory employees, and the staff of the Touraine hotel were announced to be wearing them.• Women in Liberty bond booths, elevator operators in office buildings, school principals at their Liberty bond meeting, as well as many others were also wearing masks.• Employees at the National Biscutt company were asked to wear masks, as well.• One Buffalo plant is producing masks at a rate of 20,000/day.• Health Commissioner Franklin C. Gram requested the postmaster to have postmen wear masks, as recommended by the committee.• Yesterday, a telegram was sent to US Army Surgeon General Gorgas to request extensions on when doctors have to report for military duty, in addition to the adjutant general's release of 50 physicians from the draft board to fight the epidemic.• These physicians are being organized, and will be paid by the city to treat patients free of charge if patients cannot afford care.• The health dept. urgently needs physicians right away, and if any wish to volunteer, they should speak to Dr. Gram or Dr. Wilard.• Health Commissioner Franklin C. Gram heard that some saloons were violating the order, so he asked the officers of the Brewers' exchange, the Wholesale Liquor Men's association and the Retail Liquor Dealers' association for help in enforcement of the closing order. Both the business and the city authorities are concerned about enforcement.• The Buffalo Federation of Churches sent Health Commissioner Franklin C. Gram a letter, telling him that there had been no complaints from any churches about the order, and declaring support, as well as offering their facilities, if needed, to help in the effort.• Reverend C. McLeod Smith, the executive secretary of the federation, sent the letter, and it is printed in the article.• Rev. C. McLeod Smith said that there had been rumors that churches had been complaining to his office about the closing order, but he said that none of them had made a single complaint.• He also said that pastors have, "risen to the occasion in a remarkable manner," including distributing bulletins, printed sermons, Sunday school papers, and literature via messengers.• Health Commissioner Franklin C. The meaning of race in the antebellum southern United States was anchored in the racial exclusivity of slavery (coded as black) and full citizenship (coded as white as well as male). The Philippine Journal of Development (PJD) is a professional journal published by the Philippine Institute for Development Studies (PIDS). Am 12. November 1918, dem Tag nach Ende des Ersten Weltkriegs und Ausrufung der Weimarer Republik, formulierte der Rat der Volksbeauftragten den Aufruf: "Alle Wahlen zu öffentlichen Körperschaften sind fortan nach dem gleichen, geheimen, direkten, allgemeinen Wahlrecht auf Grund des proportionalen Wahlsystems für alle mindestens 20 Jahre alten männlichen und weiblichen Personen zu vollziehen." Bereits am 30. November trat das Reichswahlgesetz mit dem allgemeinen aktiven und passiven Wahlrecht auch für die Frauen in Kraft und am 19. Januar 1919 durften sie dann erstmals reichsweit zur Wahl für die verfassungsgebende Deutsche Nationalversammlung gehen. Seither haben sich die Rahmenbedingungen für Wahlen auf dem Territorium des deutschen Staates mehrmals geändert, die Wahlbeteiligung ist tendenziell gesunken und der Anteil weiblicher Abgeordneter gestiegen. Dazu gibt es Diskussionen, ob und warum Frauen anders wählen als Männer, welchen Politikstil sie präferieren bzw. praktizieren oder welchen Einfluss sie als Mehrheit der Bevölkerung auf Politik haben. Hier werden nun die öffentlich zugänglichen Statistiken über die Wahlbeteiligung von Frauen und Männern sowie die Zahl weiblicher Abgeordneter im nationalen Parlament während der vergangenen 100 Jahre zusammengestellt. Dazu werden kurze Analyseansätze vorgestellt.
