None of the existing English editions of Marx's Capital, Vol. I, including the new Ben Fowkes translation published by Penguin in 1976, fully incorporate the text as revised by the author for his 1872-75 French edition. These omitted or alternate texts cover the subjects of the role of private property in capitalism, alienation and unskilled factory work, capitalist crises, unemployment, and imperialism. Finally, the French edition of Capital is viewed briefly in the overall context of the writings of Marx's last decade, 1873-1883.

At a time when there is much superficial talk about the need for an ENA in Britain, that institution is under increasing criticism in France itself. Some of these criticisms are outlined and discussed by the high‐ranking civil servant whose letters on Ministerial Cabinets and French Economic Planning have already appeared in this journal. As before, these critical reflections are contained in a letter to Dr.Vincent Wright of the LSE, who has again kindly provided the translation and added a few footnotes to clarify certain points.

A fi de caracteritzar el context de la traducció, la primera secció revisa conceptes museològics com "museu", "comunicació" i "textos curatorials". Després s'examinen indagacions existents sobre els TT als museus des d'una perspectiva traductològica, per després aprofundir sobre el seu caràcter autoafirmatiu mitjançant conceptes com "representació", "comunicació intercultural", "traducció cultural" i "interstici". Finalment, a partir de l'anàlisi qualitativa de dades recol·lectades via entrevistes, es conclou que les traduccions de relats enunciats, localment, sí que tenen el potencial de subvertir discursos "centrals", encara que el grau de funcionalitat política dependrà de factors com el tipus de text, el posicionament polític i geogràfic de la institució, les decisions curatorials que es prenguin i els seus recursos. ; El objetivo de esta investigación es explorar las funciones de los textos traducidos (TT) en espacios de arte moderno y contemporáneo latinoamericanos para averiguar si estos recursos interpretativos pueden ser utilizados como herramientas de resistencia ante nociones hegemónicas sobre el arte regional. In order to characterize the framework of translated texts, the first section examines museological concepts such as "museum", "communication" and "curatorial texts". The second section reviews existing literature on TT in museums from the perspective of Translation Studies, to later delve into their self-affirmative nature by inspecting concepts such as "representation", "intercultural communication", "cultural translation" and "interstice". Finally, after a qualitative analysis of data gathered via interviews, results show that the translation of locally-constructed narratives does have the potential to subvert "central" discourses, albeit their degree of political functionality depends on factors such as the type of text, museum policies, curatorial decisions, location and resources, amongst others.
Resumen: En el año 2004 sale a luz la última publicación de Paul Ricoeur, titulada Sobre la traducción, que recoge diversos textos sobre el acto de traducir, entendido como símbolo de encuentro y reconocimiento más allá de la diferencia, incluso en la misma diversidad. El régimen de las lenguas concretas, en su multiplicidad y dispersión, dice que la humanidad se ha configurado en modalidades históricas finitas —incluso cerradas— en el espacio geográfico y en el tiempo histórico. Sin embargo, la traducción, en su realidad efectiva, atestigua que la humanidad está llamada a ser una. Con estas ideas de fondo, Ricoeur se orienta a pensar las condiciones de posibilidad de la traducción, en lo que él denomina el «régimen de hospitalidad lingüística»: acoger otra lengua es también reconocer la alteridad de mi propia lengua. Sin embargo, este régimen tiene una significación antropológica más profunda en la medida que sirve de modelo para otras formas de hospitalidad, en particular éticas y políticas. Ricoeur sugiere así ampliar el espíritu de la traducción y su práctica, para comprender las modalidades del querer-vivir-juntos en un mundo diverso y plural. Colocado en esta perspectiva ético-política, el paradigma de la traducción permite vislumbrar que la fraternidad no es algo ya dado, sino una tarea a realizar a través de prácticas concretas, asociadas al deseo de entenderse y al diálogo y a la deliberación como actitudes y como método. Estas prácticas no suprimen —por exclusión o por uniformización— la alteridad de las otras culturas, sino que la asumen en un proyecto más amplio y profundo, que constituye su horizonte de sentido. ; Abstract: In 2004, Paul Ricoeur's latest publication, On Translation, which includes various texts on the act of translating, understood as a symbol of encounter and recognition beyond differences and diversity, comes to light. The regime of concrete languages, in its multiplicity and dispersion, states that humanity has been configured in finite — and even closed— historical modalities both in geographical space and in historical time. However, translation, in its effective reality, attests that humanity is called to be one. With these basic ideas, Ricoeur thinks about the conditions of possibility of the act of translating, in what he calls the "regime of linguistic hospitality": welcoming another language also implies recognizing the otherness of my own language. However, this regime has a deeper anthropological significance to the extent that it serves as a model to other forms of hospitality, particularly ethical and political ones. Ricoeur thus suggests expanding the spirit of translation and its practice, in order to understand the "will of living together" in a diverse and plural world. Placed in this ethicalpolitical perspective, the translation paradigm allows us to discern that fraternity is not something already given, but a task to be performed through concrete practices, associated with the desire to understand each other and embrace dialogue and deliberation as a method and approach. These practices do not suppress —by exclusion or by standardization— the otherness of other cultures, but instead assume it in a broader and deeper project, which constitutes their horizon of meaning.
Although Willebrord Snellius was one of the most eminent scientists of the Dutch Golden Age, never before had a substantial volume been devoted to his life and work. Liesbeth de Wreede's thesis fills this lacuna. It gives an overview of Snellius's life and work and analyses a number of case studies in depth. The focus is in particular on Snellius's development of the style of humanist mathematics and its roots, and his predilection for 'exactness', that is, a clear demarcation of allowable concepts in geometry. In the biographical part of the thesis, De Wreede discusses Snellius's life and work, and the backgrounds necessary to understand his mathematical oeuvre: Leiden University, humanist scholarship as it was practised there, mathematical practice in the rest of the Dutch Republic, the ideas of Petrus Ramus, and life and work of Willebrord's father Rudolph. Snellius (1580-1626) taught courses at the university, and was a scientific adviser for his colleagues and the government of the Dutch Republic. Moreover, he published many works, both his own books as editions and translations of works of others, all except one written in Latin. He covered almost the complete domain of the mathematical sciences: geometry, arithmetic, astronomy, navigation, surveying and optics. The first two case chapters discuss cases from mixed mathematics. The first of these is devoted to the way in which Snellius calculated the length of the circumference of the earth more precisely than his predecessors, as explained in his 'Eratosthenes Batavus'. The second discusses the patronage relationships between Landgrave Maurice of Hessen, and Rudolph and Willebrord Snellius. This study is largely based on hitherto unknown letters. The content of Willebrord Snellius's astronomical works, both dedicated to Maurice of Hessen, is related to the patronage relationship. The next three chapters discuss topics from pure mathematics. The first of these introduces the 'Fundamenta Arithmetica et Geometrica', Snellius's translation of a book by Ludolph van Ceulen. This translation is a rich source for Snellius's thoughts about acceptable mathematics, because he reacted to Van Ceulen's approach in his translations and his own commentaries, thus making the book into a dialogue between a representative of the practitioners' and one of the academic tradition. The dedicatory letter is analysed extensively, because it gives Snellius's opinion on the issue of the use of numbers in geometry, an important problem in the period, in a nutshell. The next chapter discusses Snellius's contributions to the solution of the triangle division problem, a popular geometrical problem in his period. In the last case chapter, Snellius's criticism on the traditional formulation and proof of Heron's Theorem (relating the area of a triangle to the lengths of its sides) is central. He protested against the four-dimensional magnitude that was present in the traditional approach, because such an entity could not exist in geometry. Snellius's study of the cyclic quadrilateral also receives attention. In the final chapter, all results of the previous chapters are used to sketch a complete image of Snellius's mathematics and Snellius as a mathematician.
В статье рассматриваются проблемы, связанные с переводом оттенков модальных значений в политическом дискурсе с английского языка на русский язык. В качестве материала для анализа выбрана речь Уинстона Черчилля «Кровь, труд, слезы и пот» (1940 г.) в оригинале и переводе на русский язык, выполненном Анной и Майком Ревнивцевыми. Авторы анализируют способы выражения модальных значений и их оттенков в англоязычном политическом дискурсе, сопоставляя их с языковыми средствами, использованными переводчиками. В работе приведены и проанализированы группы примеров, в которых модальные значения полностью сохраняются, а также ряд примеров, в которых переводчикам не удается сохранить оттенки модальных значений, что приводит к изменению смыслов политического дискурса. Для сохранения многосмыслия политического дискурса переводчику необходимо, на наш взгляд, точно подбирать лексико-семантические эквиваленты для выражения оттенков модального значения. ; The problems of translating various shades of modal meanings in political discourse from English into Russian are discussed in the article. The speech of Winston Churchill "I Have Nothing to Offer but Blood, Toil, Tears and Sweat" (1940) in the original and its translation are taken as the material for the study. The translation is completed by Ann Revnivtseva and Mike Revnivtsev. The authors analyze ways of expressing modal meanings and their shades in English-language political discourse and compare them with the language means used by the translators. In the article the authors single out a group of examples where modal meanings are fully retained. There are also a number of examples where the translators fail to express the shades of modal meanings, this fact resulting in a change of meanings in this example of political discourse. The authors claim that to retain multiple meanings of a political discourse piece it is necessary to find lexical and grammatical equivalents for expressing shades of modal meanings.
