The article traces the formation of a new religious and philosophical tradition of consideration of the human being. It was formed in the texts of representatives of Eastern Patristics at the epoch of Trinity and Christology theological discussions in Byzantium from the 4th to 7th centuries. The author presents the early Church Fathers' ideas of the period of Christian apologetics, who laid the foundation for early medieval Christian anthropology. The work analyzes the significant issues, the solution of which allowed Greek-Byzantine Church Fathers to shape the an­thropological tradition of Eastern Christianity. In particular, the author notes the differences in the justification of the Eastern Church Fathers' Old Testament point on the creation of man in the God's image and likeness. The researcher stresses the diversity of concepts about the contradictory nature of the human as­sociated with the confrontation of the soul (spirit) and body. In this context, the principle of antinomianism is deduced as the primary method of theorizing about the person in their relationship with God and the created world. Special at­tention is paid to the Patristics interpretation of the idea of deification, compre­hended as the life goal of an individual, and, at the same time, as a process of re­alization of the highest purpose by unifying two contradictory worlds – Divine and earthly – into one harmonious Universe. Deification is derived as an oppor­tunity to overcome man's duality and as his righteous path guiding each individ­ual to self-improvement, self-knowledge, and spiritual unity with the Creator. The article is based on the analysis of the sacred texts of Eastern Christianity, specifically by Irenaeus, Athanasius of Alexandria, Basil of Caesarea, Gregory of Nyssa, and Maximus the Confessor.

"Few areas of early modern English history have roused such passions and interpretations as the rule of Mary Tudor and her efforts to return the country to Catholicism following the reigns of her father and brother. In this book, Dr Wizeman explores Catholic theology and spirituality according to the religious literature printed during the reign of Mary Tudor (1553-1558). As part of the strategy to renew Catholic religion in England after the reformations under Henry VIII and Edward VI, Marian theologians, authors and editors produced numerous works of catechesis, religious polemic, devotion and sermons. These writings demonstrate that the Catholicism of Marian England was not a mere insular reaction to the preceding decades of religious change, nor a via media polity which eschewed important elements of traditional religion while embracing tenets of the Reformation. Rather the theology and spirituality of Mary Tudor's church, as well as many of its strategies for religious renewal, was intimately connected to - and in fact anticipated or paralleled - the theology, spirituality and strategies for reform embraced by Counter-Reformation Catholicism, especially after the promulgation of the decrees of the Council of Trent (1545-1563). After considering the recent historiography of Mary Tudor's reign, the book contextualises these writings through a brief history of the Marian church and a discussion of the authors and dedicatees. It then presents an analysis of the Marian writers' and theologians' views on revelation, christology, soteriology, ecclesiology, sacramental theology, piety and eschatology. Finally, the study compares the Catholic belief asserted in these works to that found in texts by English theologians printed before 1553, especially John Fisher, and by contemporary theologians in Europe, particularly Bartolom Carranza, as well as the Tridentine catechism, and the decrees and official texts of the English Reformation."--Provided by publisher.

Sophia - the Wisdom of God - is an important theme in ?Russian religious
renaissance?, which encompassed many Russian intellectuals by the end of 19th
and the beginning of 20th century. Particularly important figure among them
was Pavel Florensky, nicknamed ?Russian Leonardo Da Vinci?, who was a priest
of great erudition and expert in patristic theology. However, Pavel
Florensky?s and other Russian thinkers? efforts to develop the theme of
Sophia in accordance to the Fathers of the Church does not mean that they
were trying to find evidence for the existence of Sophia in patristic
literature; they were actually trying to prove that this teaching had always
existed in theological tradition. One might confidently claim that
Florensky?s theology of Sophia was not an essential contribution to Christian
faith and theology. Florensky?s distancing from patristic Christology and his
emphasizing of the idea of sophianity in iconology produced an incorrect
definition of Christian identity among the sympathizers of this teaching. In
the very essence of sophianism there is the idea of sophianity that, when
combined with the idea of absolute unity, transforms into pluripotent
pansophianism. According to George Florovsky, this approach was an esthetic
temptation for Russian theology. The idea of sophianity was also criticized
by Saint John of Shanghai, Florensky?s contemporary, who claimed that, for
sophianists, Theotokos and Saint John the Baptist, depicted in deesis of the
Church of Sophia in Novgorod, were almost as necessary for the salvation of
mankind as was the Son of God. Theotokos and John the Baptist are followed by
the remainder of humanity, and all of them, ?according to the measure of
their own sophianity?, occupy corresponding places in the ?ideal person of
humanity?. For sophianists, accomplishing unity with God means accomplishing
identity of sophianity, and not accomplishing theosis in real unity with
Christ in the Eucharist.

Theodoret's People sheds new light on religious clashes of the mid-fifth century regarding the nature (or natures) of Christ. Adam M. Schor focuses on Theodoret, bishop of Cyrrhus, his Syrian allies, and his opponents, led by Alexandrian bishops Cyril and Dioscorus. Although both sets of clerics adhered to the Nicene creed, their contrasting theological statements led to hostilities, violence, and the permanent fracturing of the Christian community. Schor closely examines council transcripts, correspondence, and other records of communication. Using social network theory, he argues that Theodoret's doctrinal coalition was actually a meaningful community, bound by symbolic words and traditions, riven with internal rivalries, and embedded in a wider world of elite friendship and patronage
